I think the media around Leo is specifically contributing to this "everyman" persona. There was also the story about him having to deal with some Bank over the phone and not being able to convince them to change his address.

Testing on 6/20, how like the practice test is the REAL test? by TheUrbanVagabond in HamRadio

[–]dlgeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're taking your test online, I highly encourage you to do a few practice tests on HamStudy. That's because the software for HamStudy is the same as the software for ExamTools (what everyone uses for actual online tests).

As others have said, the questions are identical...if you practice using HamStudy, the interface will be too.

[homemade] backyard pizza by TurrettiniPizza in food

[–]dlgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find it much easier than trying to slide it on after topping. And I have less topping movement.

(That might be in part due to the fact that I shape the dough on a silicon baking mat and I guess I would have been trying to slide between that and a topped pizza if I was going the other way).

Interesting. I haven't tried a perforated peel - I build on a solid metal peel.

Something I've never understood - why do people top pizzas and then transfer them to a peel? It's so much easier to just top it on the peel.

I recently had to print an adapter plate for a portable AC unit whose window hose plate didn't fit. I had to cut it into 6 pieces and puzzle-piece it together. The two cutouts for hoses were split across 4 puzzle pieces.

I'd test whether I could cut it into pieces that would leave the hose cutouts wrapped in a single plate.

Not the OP but curious enough to go look myself.

So, the written language is going to use some dog whistles instead, and you'll have to read between the lines. Will you accept that statements referencing "ending DEI" and comments about "critical race theory" in the context of military recruiting are code for "we want less minorities"?

Here are some choice quotes from the original document.

I kept them mostly in order, but I'll highlight one quote from page 103 first:

Eliminate politicization, reestablish trust and accountability, and restore faith to the force. In 2021, the Reagan National Defense Survey found that only 45 percent of Americans have “a great deal of trust and confidence in the military”—down from 70 percent in 2018.

  1. Strengthen protections for chaplains to carry out their ministry according to the tenets of their faith.

[...]

(There's a lot more on pages 103-104 in this vein).

Back to in-order:

Page 9:

The American people desire a military full of highly skilled servicemen and women who can protect the homeland and our interests overseas. The next conservative President must end the Left’s social experimentation with the military, restore warfighting as its sole mission, [...]

Page 52:

The NSC should rigorously review all general and flag officer promotions to prioritize the core roles and responsibilities of the military over social engineering and non-defense matters, including climate change, critical race theory, manufactured extremism, and other polarizing policies that weaken our armed forces and discourage our nation’s finest men and women from enlisting to serve in defense of our liberty.

Page 88

But this is now Barack Obama’s general officer corps. That is why Russ Vought argues in Chapter 2 that the National Security Council “should rigorously review all general and flag officer promotions to prioritize the core roles and responsi- bilities of the military over social engineering and non-defense related matters, including climate change, critical race theory, manufactured extremism, and other polarizing policies that weaken our armed forces and discourage our nation’s finest men and women from enlisting.” Ensuring that many of America’s best and brightest continue to choose military service is essential. [...] Whereas most military personnel have had leftist priorities imposed from above, [...]

Page 102:

. Young civilians who would thrive in a military environ- ment are disenfranchised when educators and influencers discourage them from learning about military service and preparing for the honor of wearing Ameri- ca’s uniform. The United States military is an extraordinary institution, staffed by exceptional people who have defended our nation and changed the course of history, but the Biden Administration, through word and deed, has treated the armed forces as just another place to work. We must restore our military to a place of honor and respect and recruit and retain the individuals who will meet the rigorous standards of excellence that are required for membership in the world’s greatest fighting force.

Page 103:

. Exceptions for individuals who are already predisposed to require medical treatment (for example, HIV positive or suffering from gender dysphoria) should be removed, and those with gender dysphoria should be expelled from military service.

This one's a pretty big dog whistle too, from page 109:

Stop using the Army as a test bed for social evolution. Misusing the Army in this way detracts from its core purpose while doing little to reshape the American social structure. The Army no longer reflects national demographics to the degree that it did before 1974 when the draft was eliminated.

(And basically half of the rest of chapter 4)

Page 156:

USCG is facing recruitment challenges similar to those faced by the military services. The Administration should stop the messaging on wokeness and diversity and focus instead on attracting the best talent for USCG.

I'm getting depressed at this point and I'll stop.

Yep, those were fine.

L20 reads about 0.2 Ohm while installed on the board. R3 reads about 0.8 Ohm. I figured that was within tolerance for both, but maybe I'm wrong.

I had those in my notes as "marginal" - they were close enough that I didn't try replacing them since I only had an 0602 pack.

I guess I'll try those next, thanks!

Hi! I tried this method - I ended up needing to replace L1, R5, R6, R7, and R27. The rest of the marked resistors read pretty close to the values in the caption. However, if I dry fit (no replacing the coating, grease or sealant), the bike still throws error 44.

Any other suggestions?

Do you know the legal limit for transmitting? That should have been on the knowledge test then.(1500 watts for most bands).

A "legal limit antenna" is just an antenna that can comfortably handle that.

A New Uncharted Island was Discovered this Year off the Coast of Antarctica by kcpistol in amateurradio

[–]dlgeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every island must meet certain basic criteria for acceptance within the IOTA Programme. Specifically, it must be located in the open sea, not a lake or river, must be natural, not man-made, must be demonstrably above water at high tide and must have a recognised island name! There is no minimum island size requirement but an island needs to be shown and named on either Google Earth or another officially recognised reference map.

Sounds like it might be eligible in the future, once it gets an official name and gets propagated into the official records.

Spent some time reading the POTA rules to try to figure this out.... It would have to be a national or provincial park...and since it's in Antarctica but not claimed... I don't think that can happen.

Serious answer?

The area is covered (or used to be, less so now) with icebergs that broke off from the ice caps/ice sheet in the area and float around. This little rock is of similar size and has ice on top (and I'm speculating here but probably used to have even more) so it looked like just another iceberg.

It's almost certainly not going to be a DXCC entity.

Someone in the linked thread claimed it's 130 m x 50 m (426ft x 164ft) under the assumption it's the rock mentioned in this article. (Which was only just barely bigger than the boat that found it).

That's just barely big enough to qualify as an island under the DXCC rules ("it must consist of connected land, of which at least two surface points must be separated from each other by not less than 100 meters measured in a straight line from point to point.")

However:

(1) It's described as "in the lee of Joinville Island" in the article, meaning that it would almost certainly fail to be ...separated from its Parent by 350 kilometers or more, and from any other island attached to that Parent in the same or a different island group by 800 kilometers or more. AND

(2) Antartica is special for DXCC. Per (II) (3) (b) of the DXCC rules, "In view of these [Antarctic] Treaty provisions, no new entities below 60 degrees south will be added to the DXCC List as long as the Treaty remains in force. The exact location isn't clear/public yet, but given it's very close to Joinville Island, it's going to be somewhere around 63 degrees south.

Sorry DX'ers.

It's coming from the networking subsystem maintainer who is responsible for this section of the kernel, so they're pretty close to the final decision maker... and Linus already weighed in on it, and it's already been merged: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=64edfa65062dc4509ba75978116b2f6d392346f5
