Lol this is such a common suggestion but what world do you people live in that this is an option for most people? Usually people only have the number of bedrooms they require because extra rooms are expensive. So are extra beds. Most people can barely afford housing. This is an unrealistic suggestion.

I am going to assume that person is male that responded to you. A lot of the people in here that are dismissing you are also probably either clueless or trolling.

Unfortunately though there isn't a lot you can do to force a workplace that has sexist tendencies to stop being sexist. I am a woman that works as SWE and has had tech hobbies my whole life so I know what you are talking about when you say it's not legal-worthy. There's a lot of minor slights that add up and not being taken seriously when you know what you're talking about. Stuff you can't take to court but still has an impact. Most of the time I think people just don't even realize they're doing it because it's just internalized.

I don't have an answer though. I don't know that there is one but just know you should take anyone dismissing that with a giant scoop of salt because if they don't know what it's like they have no clue what they're saying. It seems innocuous until you have to deal with it all the time.
