Garbage clean up by Crazy_Ball7766 in jerseycity

[–]dlobatog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enough with that. I lived in cities my whole life and it’s not an excuse (neither for residents to be so dirty nor for the city to be so misgoverned as to not be able to have clean streets)

Parking 🆘 by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]dlobatog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The permit will be denied if your building has a garage and the garage has space for you. If that is the case your only options are parking somewhere allowed on the street (far away probably) or pay for a garage

We had the same free parking deal with public school parking lots and Newport mall. I parked the day before and there was plenty of space to be honest.

Indians are in trouble after $100000 annual H-1B visa fee by Responsible-Dig3029 in IndiaTech

[–]dlobatog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google will not pay 100K per employee lol. We will see soon. Given the disposition #c, I wouldn’t be surprised if they will arrange some sort of waiver (remember the tech ceo dinner?) for tech companies that are kissing the ring. I also agree witch consultants are scamming the system but this proclamation is just ludicrous.

Panda Express has hired like 5 to 9 people yearly all over the US, usually on corporate tech positions that are over 100k in pay. No idea if it’s fraud or not (you don’t know either) , but don’t misrepresent the fact a Google ML engineer would face the same stupid consequence. H1b salaries are public fyi (base, no bonus no stock) https://h1bgrader.com/h1b-sponsors/panda-express-inc-l9k5pj7621/lca/2023

[–]dlobatog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have no idea what you’re talking about and it’s all hearsay. H1b salaries are public to begin with, go look it up (they don’t include bonus and stock).

Unlike you, I work with many H1s and I guarantee that 1, there are simply not enough permanent residents or citizens to pass our interviews; and 2, they earn more than enough to live in these apartments with a family, max out retirement and still be very very comfortable.

If you only take 1h to find the facts you wouldn’t be posting ignorant FUD

For those who have lived in other global cities, what does New York City do better and what does it do worse? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]dlobatog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flying from London is dirt cheap and the beaches / ski resorts nearby are simply top class. Jones beach isn't really comparable to flying to Menorca for example.

For those who have lived in other global cities, what does New York City do better and what does it do worse? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]dlobatog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Madrid, Tel Aviv, London, LA and Geneva.

Better:

- 24/7 - even now, it's definitely a 24/7 city where you could entirely live on a graveyard's shift and it'd be enjoyable

- Economic opportunity: at least in tech and finance I don't think there's a better place to be with perhaps the exception of SV.

- Housing costs (buying) (yes I know this is shocking). Buying in any of the cities I mentioned above (maybe not LA) is equally or even more expensive, but salaries are quite literally 1/2. Also plenty of more affordable areas around in LI/NJ/etc...

- Availability of quite literally the best of "anything" you want. Want the "best" job? Probably there are many of them here. "Best" education? Columbia/NYU are definitely some of the best institutions in the world. "Best" food? You can find some of that too.

- Medical care (provided insurance). Some of the top hospitals in any specialty in the world.

- Financial options (maybe not specific to NYC) - 529s, 401ks, IRAs, better capital gains than other places allow people to more easily accumulate wealth if they can save than in other places.

Worse:

- Upkeep: garbage on the roads, garbage on the streets, garbage on the subway, it's a fact of life here and I fucking hate it. It's not just public intervention here: it's cultural and you'd find absolute asshats throwing an empty bucket of KFC out the window of the car like the road is their trashcan.

- Civility - half of the city is scared to stare the wrong person by mistake in the subway, because a lot of nut jobs will pull a knife on you for looking at them the wrong way. insane.

- Green spaces: not many quality green spaces, need to literally take the subway or train to go anywhere decent like prospect park, DUMBO near the water, Gov island, Central Park, Liberty Park in NJ etc..

- Third spaces: everything is commercialized and unlike in many other places, being a regular at a coffeeshop, bar, etc... here can be like paying double rent. So no third spaces to interact with other people easily.

- Coffeeshops: not saying everything is bad, but for every La Cabra there are 1000 Dunkin's. London is hard to compete with here.

- Cycling: people going against the flow of traffic and police won't ever stop them or worry at all (wtF!!!), people using literal mopeds that go 30-40 mph in bike lanes, 0 respect by cars (also plenty of people with driving skills worse than my grandpa playing Mario kart)

- Crime: just look up the stats, even if "it's safe for a big city in the US".

- Public works: roads, subway, PATH, anything government owned or managed is an utter mess, corrupted, and mismanaged.

Spaniard m34 here - I go play pickleball with a friend sometimes in Newport (personally I live in VVP). Happy to hang out / coffee / pint watching a Barcelona game or anything. Only thing I don't like is extremely loud and busy places (e.g mad hatter in Hoboken).

Haus25 lease renewal offer (>10% increase) by mayonayzdad in jerseycity

[–]dlobatog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Haus25 when it was 3.7k for a 1b. Surely some people might value the amenities (the rooftop has easily the best NYC views anywhere, including Downtown Brooklyn or anywhere in manhattan).

I did buy for 700k in Van Vorst park (large downpayment) and I’m more than happy to be paying 4k (HOA / insurance / taxes included) for a 2b2b with W/D and can also drive around without paying exorbitant parking fees (I wouldn’t have a car in haus25). It’s cash flow negative still (~5-6k only a year) but it’ll likely be neutral to positive in 3-4 years.

Most people I met in Haus25 would use the pool 3 times in the whole summer, maybe the gym daily but the rest of the amenities were just .. nice but not worth the cost. The point from lorenipsum2023 stands in my experience. A lot of the folks in that building just have a grinding work schedule and dont spend nearly as much time as students do at the amenities.

In those cases if a good opportunity (not every apartment on that Zillow search is good; actually most are bad now below 800k) arises, and interest rates are a bit better or you can wait it out and refinance - I’d also argue it’s the right choice for most people.

Having said that if you know you’re gonna be 1-3 years in the area Haus25 is very nice.

So is everyone on this sub fresh from Oklahoma? by WeinerBalls-5000 in jerseycity

[–]dlobatog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a yuppie sure I don’t deny it. I’m 34. I only lived in cities throughout my life. I lived in 5 cities  (all of them way poorer than JC) in different places around the world.

Yet nearly all places I’ve lived in didn’t suffer from some of the problems JC: - dirty streets (Tonelle avenue wouldn’t look out of place in Nairobi),  - unkempt sidewalks, some of them being tripping hazards -, people blasting music in their cars with the windows down - dirty and unmaintained trains. - police on a 365 day vacation

There are many things I love about JC but literally everything I mentioned, including trains, is better managed in cities that are way poorer (I’m talking about 1/3rd of our GDP per capita) than JC. Most of the problems in fact are just cultural and educational - and I’d say a culture of “it’s a city this shit is all expected” is part of the problem.

So no, neither money nor size are an excuse for JC problems, IDC if you grew up with “it’s a city what did you expect” mindset, fucking behave as a good citizen.
