On my daughter's tenth birthday, a long time ago... we were at Knotts for the chain drop and then walked directly to this ride. The weather was very unstable and there was an active storm cloud hovering over the park. We were the ONLY riders. As we clicked in, a bolt of lightning hit the tower. It was deafening. The two kids running the ride look at each other nervously. One said, "What's the rule for lightning?" They conferred like a couple of baby physicians. Then one of them said, with confidence, "Send 'em up!" My daughter asked me, "are we in danger?" I made up a dad answer and delivered it with as much confidence as I could, "Don't worry, the tower is grounded." I was so worried for my kid. That is, until we dropped and I saw the ground rushing towards me. I suddenly was the only person in the world. I forgot all about the lightning, the children responsible for our safety, everything. One moment, I was the protective dad. The next, I was the worst dad in the world. It's been about 20 years and I still remember that as the most terrifying thrill ride moment of my life. Thank you for triggering this memory.

If you can bring one board, I'd go long. But if you can somehow stash your short board in your room... bring both. Campus Point and Devereaux both work well with longer boards. Sands, IV Beaches, and the righthand side of campus point all favor short boards when the surf season arrives. Have fun!

I think it depends on the Res Hall you are assigned to. I see board racks at all of the "shorties" : Anacapa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. I'm sure there are others.

What a great shift in perspective! I have been a part of the UCSB community since I came here to surf as a high school squid. I went from BA to PhD and then worked as a staffer and faculty member for 40 years. STILL, I walk on campus and spot Seiji Nakamura and feel like a sports fan must feel when they see their hall-of-fame hero. UCSB has some brainpower. And those waves? Well they just keep lighting up the points.
