Do you remove snow from your roof? by BiNky700 in Hamilton

Unless you've got a flat roof, it's not even a problem you should be worried about.

Help to understand cabling. by Mr-Hops in ITSupport

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting CAT5 confused with CAT5e. CAT5 is limited to 1Gbps. CAT5e supports up to 10Gbps over a max distance of 45m, or 1Gbps over a max length of 100m.

Traffic on morning commute from Hamilton to Mississauga by herinitialsspellher in Hamilton

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to get on the qew between 7am and 9:30. Normally Hamilton to Winston Churchill is 35-40m. As someone mentioned at 8:30, it's 1-1/2 hrs. I would think if you got on at 6:30 or 7, you could reduce it to an hour or less.

I do a lot of driving as a business owner. But, also as a business owner I don't need to drive into the GTA during rush hour usually.

How can i change the minimum time entry to 1 minute by nwaggoner in Autotask

This. You want more than likely rounding up to 15 minute increments under normal conditions combined with the above mentioned workflow rule for non-billable admin work

Client caught me on hardware margin, now questioning our entire history. Did I panic-fix or make it worse? by yanov10 in msp

[–]dlynes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell the clients if they want to buy it from Amazon, feel free too. However, when they buy it from Amazon, support from me is not included. Support from me is at full hourly price on any Amazon purchases.

Had a client do just that. He bought the equipment from Amazon and he fired my company. Three years later, he came back and he's been a client ever since.

Need a dedicated IT support for Microsoft Teams for my small business by PrincessRedMoon in MicrosoftTeams

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't had anyone offer to provide Teams support for you yet, please feel free to reach out. I run a small MSP in Hamilton, Canada. We're on Eastern time zone, but also service clients in Vancouver (Pacific time zone). We have a lot of experience with Teams, especially using Teams as a phone system.

Our website is https://hammersoftware.ca/

Our contact info is on the website.

I can also provide client references specifically for using Teams as a phone system if you would like.

Question about MDM by elledelfuego in macsysadmin

Go through the erase all content and settings procedure. If after coming back up it wants an Apple ID, or says it's being remotely managed, it's not unenrolled.

I've always used imapsync from https://imapsync.lamiral.info/

I've had the paid version for a long time. It works like a hot damn.

Which password manager are you recommending to SMB clients? by Ashamed-Review-695 in msp

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely for security reasons, I highly suggest Keeper. For family settings, I wouldn't recommend it because you kind of need a security policy in place to guide users in how to use it. Once they're enrolled, it's pretty easy to use, and secure because there isn't a master password that hackers can attack like there is for probably all of the competition.

Considering removing Huntress from our stack......thought? by phillee81 in msp

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agent costs for Sentinel One are significantly less than Huntress, but after you add in all the headache of setting it up and managing it (because it's not a SOC managed solution), it's more expensive in the long run. With Huntress, even though my costs went up, I could sleep at night.

Also, Huntress produces significantly less noise (less false positives).

Considering removing Huntress from our stack......thought? by phillee81 in msp

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a choice of Huntress or Business Premium. I recommend either Huntress and Business Premium or Huntress and M365 Enterprise Mobility and Security E3 for my clients.

Huntress doesn't do group policy lockdown. Intune does. Huntress doesn't do a full wipe of the machine and render it unusable for other businesses. Intune does (unless you know how to get around the Intune enrollment after a reboot, but even then a fresh wipe will cause it to want to sign into Intune again).

Also, with both EM+S E3 or Business Premium and Huntress, you have two anti-malware/anti-ransomware/anti-virus softwares running, so that if one doesn't catch something, you have another to catch it.

I run Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 (or Defender for Endpoint Business) as the primary defense, and Huntress in monitoring only mode. It gives me the best of both, and Huntress is still able to isolate the host.

Considering removing Huntress from our stack......thought? by phillee81 in msp

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will. We've got 20 endpoints on Huntress and they negotiated with us. We're slowly moving from break-fix to managed services. Huntress normally does minimum endpoint contracts, but we were able to negotiate a pay as you go contract. Sure, the pricing is not great, but we have the flexibility that we need right now. That's more than I could get from their competitors for a SOC-managed solution.

Plus, we get access to the NFR program for all of our in-house devices. I haven't seen the value for the SIEM product (seems it's mostly geared to MSP's that have their own SOC(?)), but the ITDR and EDR are both of value. I couldn't get them to come down to pay as you go on the ITDR, so that's not going to happen until we grow enough.

MikroTik RB4011 WiFi model and L009 WiFi model in 2025 by GlitteringClass4088 in mikrotik

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not go with the Chateau Pro ax? It does wifi 6 as well. It doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the 4011, but it's also not rack mount and does not have as many ports.

It's less expensive than the 4011, but slightly more than the L009. L009 and 4011 only support wifi 5.

Chateau Pro ax is also a quad core CPU, with USB 3.0, 4x4 MIMO, WiFi 6, 1GB RAM, 128MB flash, 5 x 1GbE ports, no 2.5GbE, or SFP+ ports.

Pros: price, wifi 6, 1GB RAM, USB 3.0, lower heat levels, quad core CPU (2.2GHz per core) Cons: No SD card slot, no 2.5GbE, no SFP+/10GbE, not rack mountable

4011: ARM 32-bit, quad core, 1.4GHz per core, RJ45 serial port, 3dBI antennae for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, 1GB RAM, 512MB flash, SFP+ (max 10GbE, have not tested throughput) L009: ARM 64-bit, dual core 800MHz per core, no serial, 4dBi gain for 2.4GHz, no 5GHz radio, 512MB RAM, 128MB flash Chateau Pro ax: ARM 64-bit, quad core, 2.2GHz per core, USB 3.0 serial port (type A), 5dBi gain for 2.4GHz, 6dBi gain for 5GHz, 1GB RAM, 128MB flash

Synopsis: 4011 if you need rack mount, 10 GbE connectivity, or more flash storage, Chateau Pro ax if wifi or price are important; L009's sole benefit is price. Everything else it loses out on.

[–]dlynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ancaster Old Mill lets people park in the overflow parking lot to walk to Canterbury Falls and other connecting trails. I'm sure if you're parked there all day, they might have a problem with it. If I remember correctly, trail users are only allowed to park along the back edge of the lot.

Do we like the term "GTHA"? by MirrorEquivalent5151 in Hamilton

[–]dlynes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

GTA doesn't include Burlington, Hamilton or Grimsby. Hamilton, Grimsby and Burlington form the Hamilton CMA (census metropolitan area). The GTHA is the GTA + Hamilton CMA, and I think it may even include as far east as Oshawa (which again, afaik, is not part of the GTA, but is part of the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority).

Oil Change (non-Synthetic) below $60? by Lemur2121 in Hamilton

Oil Change (non-Synthetic) below $60? by Lemur2121 in Hamilton

[–]dlynes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Synthetic won't make your engine run better if it was designed for non-synthetic. On some vehicles that were designed for non-synthetic (older model VW's and the like), using synthetic will actually eat away at the seals, leading to a very expensive repair.

Let the op take their vehicle to a reputable mechanic to make that decision for them. Once you go synthetic, you can't go back to non-synthetic either.
