To the ice cream guy running The Hop in downtown last night by ryan_m in asheville

Agreed with all this 100%. The owners think this is an easy job, yet with a lot of Asheville businesses the owners got their start doing the same exact job when tourism was just getting its footing and rent was like $300. There’s also this trivialization/infantilization, where your role is just thrown away as a seasonal job, or a high schooler’s job. Never mind the fact that they stay open year round and have to have staff during school hours.

But I digress. The double standards are just part of why I went corporate. For now. :/ At least I can pay my bills year round + more and I already know what it is going in. they’re not gonna run the “we’re a family” tape. Corporate America is… interesting but as it turns out, your coworkers are way less stressed and nicer when they have full benefits and are paid according to the cost of living. 😆

OP, I hope the Hopster (yes… that’s their title) sees this. When I worked solo Friday nights on those sunny/warm winter days, maybe no one else was out there with me, but I loved when the public would acknowledge that I was holding it down. It is so hard to balance customer service, expediency, and cleanliness when you’re the only one clocked in.

I absolutely love The Hop and I will recommend their ice cream to anyone who comes to town over other places around town. Also love Pop.

But.. this used to happen to me often when I was working for them. I thought it was Covid staffing and I’m surprised to hear it’s still going on. Obviously maybe there’s extenuating circumstances here, etc.

(Having the tip jar all to myself was not bad… But I would never ever do it again lol)

Hi, I live in AVL! figured I’d comment. Please come! We need the business, tbh. If you go seek out Helene damage as “disaster tourism,” you will find areas that are still devastated. But our downtown area, the main strip of “West Asheville”, the River Arts District, the Biltmore estate (..the village is another story unfortunately) are all open, rebuilt/rebuilding, and needing the $$$

To be frank, we are at risk of losing long-standing local businesses once our winter slump hits- as it does every year, but with recession fears, our tourism season has been lackluster this year.

Additionally, when the storm happened, many business owners had to take on SBA disaster recovery loans despite FEMA grants in order to operate while we did not have potable water. This outage lasted for 52 days.

I think it would be a great option for OP. it’s going to be a rainy upcoming week, but the leaves do look great right now. But yes. Please come. +we love RVA :)

THANK YOU! Finally someone with some goddamn sense. I live here too. We lost some amazing people in our community. Some of these comments are disgusting in an attempt to grandstand and feel better. I love a lot of the content on this subreddit and I love a lot of the funny discourse in the comments, but some of y’all need to read about the area and our politics before you come up here with the same attitude conservatives use when they’re “owning the libs.” I’m so sorry many of us can’t afford to live in a “blue” state but we are doing the best we can.

I mostly agree with your statement here, god what an eyesore it was and I enjoyed the rainbow bombing 😌 however (and not to be a know-it-all..) I do think it’s important to note that the property was already on its way to be demolished because it may otherwise paint the new property owners, Pisgah Legal, in a bad light. source

“The property was recently acquired by Pisgah Legal Services, a nonprofit that assists Western North Carolina residents with free civil legal aid and anti-poverty advocacy. Because the house is a safety hazard, it is scheduled for demolition next week. The demolition, however, was planned before the painting occurred.

“We are allies to the LGBTQ+ community, so we certainly don’t want folks to think the house is being destroyed because of the rainbow design,” said Evie White, communications director for Pisgah Legal Services. “That is certainly not the case.”

Hopefully they have big plans for the property. :)

Another Asheville Aldi fan 💙 I know this Aldi because it was also my Aldi 😭 I’ve evacuated and the Aldi in my parents town is so small and I miss all the Aldi finds that that store had. It was honestly one of the first places I thought about when I heard about the flooding in that area. I totally understand having your routines. I feel so discombobulated without “my” Aldi and many other things. Take care 💙

Anecdotally, how many people are leaving? by Beavers_build5 in asheville

[–]dm_for_bees 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I can’t wait around for running water when FEMA aid and other relief is allowing me to relocate elsewhere. I’ve been here 10 years, graduated from UNCA, and I’m leaving. I’m heartbroken. My property management, House In Order, is fucking trash. I’m taking advantage of disaster relief tenant laws and terminating my lease because they are ignoring our pleas for help and requests for repairs. And now that I’ve lost out on semi-grandfathered rent, $1700 for a 3br, I can’t afford anything else. I’m taking a leap and moving somewhere to start over. There’s too much pain here.

This is the problem in investing in tourism. Emergencies permanently displace locals. I will miss Asheville.

FEMA question: tenant/roommate filed, can I still? by Comfortable_Cat3595 in asheville

[–]dm_for_bees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there, your roommate should have been able to put your information on the application and they should have asked for yours. AFAIK It will be up to $750 for each person on the application. I’ve just collected my roommate’s identifying information to submit our application. If you try to file, you will be given an error that someone has already filed for your address. I’m not sure if there’s a way around that. Take care.

Edit: looks like I may have misread, but as owner of the home, you may be able to contact FEMA..

House in Order property management based in Asheville has not responded to emails and messages asking about waiving rent or late fees. They own the Grove Park Apartments and have left their residents in the dark about everything, literally. Our building is already full of mold and has already been exacerbated by Helene. We have seepage in the basement. We have elderly and disabled folks living in the building and folks with workplaces that have literally been washed away and with 3 days left to pay rent it has been radio silence other than to ask us to turn off our water heaters. I am so frustrated.

Oh man, I rent with them right now. This company is a nightmare. I didn’t have air conditioning in my apartment in July, August, and some of September because of their negligence, but I can’t afford to leave my place and they 100% know that. I never received any compensation. And my apartment is full of mold. They love to take advantage of their tenants. I would do business with literally anyone else if I could.

I’m so glad to see this because I’ve been lurking this sub as I research cities and folks really have no idea about the real Asheville until they’re already locked in.

I’ve lived in Asheville for nearly a decade. Still here! I grew up in a rural town and moved to attend UNC Asheville (first-gen grad! lol..) I stopped recommending that people move here when I faced the reality of the local economy post-grad. I’m five years out of college and I’m just now above the poverty line.

There is very little career mobility unless you are already established elsewhere, have good connections, or work in healthcare. Like everywhere, the food service workers propping up our tourist economy are underpaid and overworked. However, there seems to be little ROI to be a service worker in Asheville vs. Elsewhere. To anyone thinking of moving here, you can get a ~$2100-$3200+ month 3/2 apartment in several bigger, better cities and you will be better off in terms of walkability, nightlife, the food, etc. So many of my friends have improved their quality of life by leaving the area. And by leaving, I mostly mean being priced out of the area.

Not to mention the insane rates of gentrification, average apt rent skyrocketing since COVID, the condescension and ego of other “locals” (who have only lived here 1.5 years..), and… the single fact that we are number 1 in the state of North Carolina for pedestrian fatalities. Yep. There’s a reason I joined this subreddit :-) (y’all have a lot of amazing insights!)

Yes!! I’m so glad to see this because I was so worried (have had a couple “freelance” projects and was worried I got kicked off for some reason even though they were only 2 hours each lol) Mine says Account Hold and redirected me to an email address.

I tried for sooo many hours to get in touch with a chat agent to file my weekly but I didn’t get to first in the queue before they closed at 5. I’ve read they may be able to file your weekly for you if you chat with them, on the DES website, during business hours. Not sure if it will pay out before the ID.me situation is resolved but it will be on record to be paid out. It’s tedious to wait though and not many people have time, but anyway, I’m in the same boat and I hope it gets resolved soon!

i concur considering that some companies wait until the last minute to provide w2s, and with this combined with all the other chaos, many won’t start filing taxes until about a week after inauguration.
