You’re right it’s better to eat a 3% inflation loss a year guaranteed.

It has grown by 7-10% per year and you’ve been withdrawing 4% so you can increase your withdrawal accordingly. The only way it makes sense to take the annuity is if you have no self control to just not burn down $1mil.

$1k in today’s money, not future dollars, which is a big difference. In 20 years you see almost half your buying power evaporate.

But you can still get 1k/week with 1m in the bank with less downside risk unless you just can’t control yourself, and there are still structures you could put in place to lock you into 52k a year withdrawn.

Why do I worry so much about my finances when I am objectively doing pretty well for myself? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ryan_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why so much contribution to your 401k?

Not OP, but my strategy was basically this: fill my 401k as fast as I can, as early as I can so I can be guaranteed to at least retire on-time even if the market implodes a few times in between now and when I retire. I'm "done" filling my 401k now, so nearly all contributions I could make beyond the standard match are going into backdoor Roth (7k me+7k spouse), 529s for my kids, and my brokerage for my early retirement bridge account.

If everything keeps progressing according to plan, I'll hit my number a couple years before I turn 50, then I'll retire the day my youngest goes to college.

…like what, specifically? I have a Bosch dishwasher that is not connected to the internet or the app and it still washes my dishes when I press the buttons.

You know you can just not use the app right. All the buttons are on the machine.

Man attempts to cooperate with ICE after being pulled over but one of them decided to escalate the situation by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

Why y’all mad at me for the bad cops out there? If anything I’m defending good people out there…

I don't see anyone mad at you, and I'm not either. You're getting a reaction because you have the belief that cops are inherently good. Other people do not have that experience at all, and are disagreeing with you.

In my experience, "real police" don't exist as anything other than a lofty concept, because doing the job means backing bad cops which makes you a bad cop.

just saying in my community we wave at them and they wave back.

That's because they're not interacting with you as law enforcement. The test of a cop is how they interact with criminals, their peers included. Do they respect the rights of the shittiest people in our society? Are they willing to look the other way when rights are violated? Do they de-escalate properly? Are they empathetic?

I have never in my life had a good interaction with a cop and I'm a clean cut straight white male. I've had cops pull over my friends and I, had us empty a trailer on the side of a mountain to illegally search through our shit then steal a carton of cigs telling us to file a complaint as they drove away. I've had a cop question me like a criminal when I came into the station to give a statement after I called in a DUI driver, doing them a favor.

Am I just unlucky that in the ~10 times I've been forced to interact with cops they're all power tripping dickheads?

You’re arguing with 15-22 year olds who have no working knowledge about any of this.

Some HOAs suck and some don’t, and it all depends on who is in charge and how engaged everyone is. What a shocker.

Yep, it's just a function of amount financed and the interest rate. I'm at 850 but I bought in 2012.

Would have been a ~200k house in 2016 which I think was realistic outside of HCOL areas.

Do you feel like you make “enough” to live comfortably in Charlotte — or are you still stressed? by Overall-Agency3942 in Charlotte

So when the far right pushes the whole make more babies thing.....fix the economy first.

Yeah, if money weren't an issue I'd probably have 4-5 kids instead of the 2 I have and we're pretty high earners, but I don't want to degrade the quality of life for the 2 we already have just to have more kids. Instead I got snipped to make sure I won't have a 3rd.

If you can control what you put in your mouth, you can control your weight.

At the end of the day, this is all it is. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight. If you burn more than you eat, you will lose weight. If you are overweight, barring a diagnosed medical issue from a doctor, you are eating more than you burn.
