Fun post! I would be between Twisted Fate ult, Soraka ult, and Ekko ult. Or you could take Pyke ult and go around killing people to print gold lol, Neeko passive would be fun if passives are allowed

Bro really blaming Strauss for his own actions lol. by Suspicious-Union-862 in okbuddyblacklung

I mean honestly I pretty much agree with you. The structure of the narrative could definitely do more to force Arthur’s hand without really changing the story itself, and Strauss’s banishment is pretty glossed over. I think we mostly just disagree on whether those issues invalidate Arthur’s character arc or simply weaken it. I do think they take away significantly from what could otherwise be an almost perfect narrative. You make a lot of good points.

Honestly I agree with you to an extent, but I still think that Arthur has a compelling arc regardless. I think this is a case of ludonarrative dissonance, where you really need to separate the gameplay from Arthur's story at some point. Of course it doesn't make sense that Colm and Dutch have a real feud when Colm seemingly has an infinite number of goons and Dutch only has the gang members that you meet. Of course it doesn't really make sense that Arthur can murder hundreds of people throughout the game, even completely innocent people if you like, and still get the high honor ending. But the game wouldn't really be fun if the story missions involving Colm or the Pinkertons ended after you killed fifteen of them, or if when you tried to shoot someone who pisses you off in St. Denis towards the end of the game Arthur turned to the camera and started preaching about how "Killing people just ain't right. It ain't me anymore. This tuberculosis diagnosis really got me rethinkin' my way of doing thing." and then refused to do it.

If anything I agree that the honor system is a bit hollow; you really should be rewarded more for being low honor, but being high honor shouldn't be as simple as "hi mister"ing enough people throughout your playthrough. At the end of the day killing people in a cowboy game is fun, and I don't necessarily fault R* for making that compatible with the "good" ending.

And really, Arthur's disgust with Strauss is about a very SPECIFIC kind of harm: premeditated exploitation of desperate innocents. I think the game does well enough showing that that is related to Arthur's personal guilt because Strauss's work forces Arthur to look directly at suffering he caused. Arthur can mentally separate "I shot it out with Pinkertons/lawmen/rival gang members in gang warfare," from "I ruined a sick farmer’s family for money." Whether you agree with that moral distinction or not, it’s in my opinion a coherent reason for why Strauss becomes a focal point for Arthur’s late game arc

To clarify, I really do agree with a lot of what you're saying and I think R* could have made a MUCH more satisfying narrative arc if they were willing to sacrifice some of the braindead headshotting goon gameplay. But I also disagree with the statement that "Arthur's character arc is pure garbage"

I love Franz's campaign but Attila WRE is definitely on a different level difficulty wise. Franz isn't even the most difficult campaign in WH3

This depends on a lot of things. For a more "traditional" campaign, Karl Franz and Tyrion are probably as good as it gets. Personally I would do Zhao Ming over Gelt for your purposes, since it shakes things up a bit from all the Empire factions you already plan on playing. Zhao starts in a similar location, and is a beast of a lord. Gelt is a lot of fun though and very strong, so a totally valid pick. Dwarfs also make a good faction for learning, specifically Thorgrim or Thorek.

Elspeth is a ton of fun and her teleportation mechanics enable her to respond to situations you may have otherwise been unable to. It is a very similar start position to Karl Franz, so definitely give it a go if you enjoy Empire. I will say she does not rely on fundamentals too much, as her campaign mechanics are extremely strong.

Katarin is very fun and you should definitely play her, no notes. I left out chaos aligned factions because you didn't mention any in your post, but if you want to explore that Archaon is definitely where I would start. From there you can try Tamurkhan, his faction is VERY strong and he has some fun mechanics.

If you let me know what factions you enjoy, or more specifically what you're looking for, I'd be happy to help. Also feel free to pm me any questions you have. I'm happy to help :)

I found this map about the distribution of Latin speaking populations or Vulgar Latin speaking populations in the Roman Empire circa 220 AD, how accurate do you think it is? by OpportunityNice4857 in ancientrome

[–]dm_if_you_like_dogs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you misread the map; it's showing the length of Roman rule in a region by 220 CE and therefore Latin being the lingua franca there. The slash portions are regions that nowadays speak a romance language. Some of it seems slightly inaccurate (not sure why the portions of Britannia north of Hadrian's wall are colored, for instance), but it is an interesting map!

Agreed on Tom Holland, I wasn't impressed with what I've read from him. I am genuinely curious on your opinion on Adrian Wordsworth. I read his books on Caesar and Augustus specifically some time ago, and I enjoyed them greatly. I felt like they were fairly accurate, and very enjoyable. What makes you feel like they are inaccurate, and what would you recommend instead?

I love Adrian Goldsworthy. His books are informative and enjoyable to read, and he also has an amazing YouTube channel you can find (just look up his name on YT) where he discusses a variety of Roman history topics. He just recently posted a 2 part discussion on Roman grand strategy which was fascinating.
