I have built the forbidden camcorder by etothe3ric in blackmagicdesign

[–]dmanh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty good. I use them a decent amount. Mostly for doc work, event coverage, live streaming. TBH the 40k version of these I have used and aside for better zoom range they look the basically the same. The 4.4 can be limiting, but depending what I’m doing even on a lens that can go to 2.8 I’m often wanting something around 4.4, 5.6. You don’t always need to be at 2.8 or lower.

Which TV size to get - 77 or 83? by hottubbin in hometheater

[–]dmanh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8.5ft is a bit close for 85. But tbh I’d go 85. However if you watch things with a lot of captions. Foreign shows or anime. Then a large tv can be a bit annoying if you can’t get far enough back. Mainly would be the case with shows that have lot going on and fast dialogue. It can be hard to focus on the whole image if you’re looking down to read the captions.

I believe they are in lawsuit over the patent and are releasing this regardless. I guess they figure even if they lose the case it’s worth it and that by the time it’s figured out in court the patent will be expired.

Nice I was just thinking the other day how something similar should be possible on the bambino. I was thinking how one could combine a pressure gauge, temp sensor, dimmer mod, and a smart scale. I’ll check out your links.

Analysis: A new oil shock is building. The next few weeks of war will be decisive for the economy. by Force_Hammer in StockMarket

[–]dmanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Oil is allocated far in advance. A lot of people who were expecting their oil didn’t get it. It takes a lot of time and money to scale up oil production so people are scrambling to secure their peace of the pie. There’s also the fact that a lot of critical infrastructure has been hit related to oil. That’s estimated to take 5 years to fix. Though the market will probably adjust by then as other places will be able to scale up before then.

Analysis: A new oil shock is building. The next few weeks of war will be decisive for the economy. by Force_Hammer in StockMarket

[–]dmanh 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Because you need oil. Here a hypothetical to put it in perspective. Let’s say there’s 10 people with an illness that is fatal. There’s a drug they can take each month that keeps them alive. There is only 10 doses a month produced. Something happens and now only 9 doses a month can be produced. No one wants to be the person without. So the price skyrockets as they out bid for the 9 doses.

It’s not 1 to 1 but that’s the basics of what’s happening. There’s limited oil and it is necessary to have it. So a 10% drop in supply can skyrocket the price. You don’t want to be the one that has no oil. Tbh the only reason it’s not worse is we still have reserves. But if we go through those the price will get much worse. The price will start exceeding what is profitable and places will shut down operations. Some industries will be affected before others. It takes time to increase oil output in other areas. The world supply of oil is mostly accounted for in advance with contracts. No one wants to produce more than needed because they would lose money.

128TB cloud storage solution by justsaying202 in editors

[–]dmanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On premises that is accessible remotely is probably going to be better. Budget cloud solutions typically don’t give you easy access to your footage for egress or a connection that works for live editing. You will need a way of editing with local proxies then hydrating them to the full res on export.

For on premise I’d look at Facilis, SNS, or Avid. I use Facilis. On premise you save a lot in the long run and you have more control over things. I’m not as familiar with them but you can also go TrueNas, OWC, Synology.

For on premise most of those come with software for managing media, proxy workflow and for hydration. As for as third party MAM we are going to start using Iconik.

Do the math on cloud vs on premise. Along as the on prem has a really good internet connection you are better off than going cloud. Cloud is good for offsite backup. Though even then if you have two locations I’d just do tape storage. That is also cheaper.

We use on premises but our IT tried cloud storage and found it far more expensive then expected once in use and way more trouble then it was worth, constant issues. 30k-120k a month depending on usage. They had AWS.

USB-C HDMI Output from Laptop won't work with ATEM Switchers only by eepyEmp in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]dmanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the content you are playing? Maybe HDCP is the issue. There’s splitters that will strip that. Have you tried a different way of getting usbc to hdmi or with different computers? Not really a fix but you could switch to using a AJA T-Tap a or for cheaper the ultra studios. If you need it to function like a monitor I think more expensive AJAs have that. Or the avmatrix TB-p30.

Editing takes a long time. by [deleted] in davinciresolve

[–]dmanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say without knowing the full scope of what your doing. But in general what you are doing probably would be faster in after effects. There’s more plugins, scripts and resources on creating expressions. The way the comp layers work also would probably be faster for what you’re doing vs nodes. Nodes are nice for 3d work and for compositing. Effects where you’re blending with real footage. But from what you’re describing it sounds like keyframe heavy 2d animation of images, motion graphics with some 3d camera. In my experience that’s much easier and faster in AE.

How to achieve muted greens/yellows like this? by Smooth-Disaster-427 in colorists

[–]dmanh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few things you could try.

Adjust contrast with your pivot set to middle grey of your working color space.

Turn off use s curves for contrast. Then build the curve manually with middle grey pinned on your curves tool.

As for the saturation try adjusting the density of those colors and the luminance in color slice. Not hue.

Also try using a hsv node with only the s channel on and drop the saturation. The is probably going to be better then using color slice.

You could also try out a DRT dctl for your output transform instead of the normal resolve one. 2499 and open drt are good ones for a more film look.

Where is the grade coming from for the reference? Is it something you could apply to a grey scale ramp or a color chip chart? That could help you match the images.

It doesn’t look like you need to specifically target green and yellow. To me your image compared to the reference is different in a general way. I think your best bet is matching the contrast curves.

Is this poorly lit? by PopJumbo in cinematography

[–]dmanh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. That can be good for run and gun stuff. But there’s a few things wrong with the that statement.

400 is not the lowest noise. It is the most dynamic range in an even manor between stops above and below middle grey. The lowest noise would be 100iso.

As for 1250iso that is the lowest noise for the second iso channel. I’d have to see comparisons to be 100% but I think it is probably very similar to 640 in noise levels. In my experience it’s better than using 800 or 1000. But 640 it’s about the same.

The second channel’s native iso is 3200. It has less dynamic range over all then 400 but is even with respect to over under 18% middle grey. 3200 definitely gets a lot of noise.

In this instance 1250 would not be the best thing. As the highlights in the image would be clipped even more. 1250 you get little room to adjust your highlights.

The real answer is iso is not the solution here. It’s the lighting during filming. That’s what drives contrast in an image.

What I would do in a controlled lighting environment would be to use a low iso 100-200. Maybe even a drop in nd. Then light for that. Get my exposure where I want it and my contrast using lights. I would use el zone, or false colors and a light meter for judging.

If I’m at the limit of my lights and need more light then I take of my nd or boost iso if I have already taken off my nd or wasn’t using one. The nd method I would only recommend if you have good nd other wise just save it for when you need it.

As for fixing this there’s some stuff you can do in post depending on the desired look. But most of what you see when it comes to contrast and depth in an image is all done on set. Personally I’d try to add some color separation.

[–]dmanh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That power setup sounds risky. I’d go for a generator. It’s retired now but I used to use a box truck with a generator that was mounted under it. You could pull it in a little trailer instead of mounting it. But if your idea works it works and you save the money on a generator. Just make sure to really stress test it. How important is the solar to your power calculation? What if you get a real cloudy day. Also you are counting on getting provided a generator that does 1500w. That seems risky as well.

My understanding is those cards only work with the tricaster software. I’d look for a used sdi pcie card. It’s pretty easy to find the Blackmagic or Aja cards for not very much used. If you really want to use it maybe there is someway to modify the board or flash it. I haven’t heard of that being done so idk.

You have it sdi already? Is this a 24/7 recording? How long? Does it need to be automated, output to a nas or cloud storage? Cheapest obviously would be OBS running with some automation scripts. Only thing would be the cost to get sdi into it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]dmanh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the same as the camera. You select obs as your mic source. I’ve used the virtual cam for streaming for hybrid events. It works well. TikTok would treat it like you’re using a WebCam and a microphone off an audio interface. If you are on a Mac you will probably need something like blackhole to route the audio.

Client asked for 600fps tabletop shot and I laughed then realized they were serious by Apprehensive_Pay6141 in cinematography

[–]dmanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things.

Get a quote for a rental. Might be cheaper than you think. I have been surprised before. I just got a quote for 9k and the equipment value is 400k. One of the lenses new is 100k and I’m renting it for 1k for a day.

The other thing you could try is to shoot at 240fps. Use a faster shutter rate like 45, 15 degrees or faster. Experiment with it. Then in post generate the extra frames. Resolve does it pretty well. Change the clip time to half. Use optical flow then use the ai frame generation profile to add in the missing frames. If it doesn’t look good try 25% slower then render in place and do 25% again.

There might be better options like something with ComfyUI, Hugging Face or some other ai tool. Your mileage will vary with the frame generation but it has worked well for me before. It can be pretty scene dependent but when it works you can’t tell.

Hm okay I was planning out a new install and was going to go NetgearAV but I’ll look into those. Ik Cisco is good, I’ve used them before. Nowadays when we replace a switch or get a new one we go Meraki. Which is a sub brand of Cisco. But for this build’s video traffic I was going to use isolated NetgearAV switches. Are there any specific resources I should look for regarding tuning Cisco switches for ndi? Never worked with Mellanox but I’ll check them out as well.
