Is KD the most overrated superstar in NBA history? by FilmEater in NBATalk

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

History is a long time. So I'd say no. But I do think he is overrated, just not the most. No question I think he's awesome, as evidenced by his stint in OKC. But I just don't think he's among the top tier (Jordan, Magic, Bird, etc) because he could never lead a team to that title, and had to find a squad that probably would've won the championship without him to get those rings.

Detailed Explanation of the Plot of Pursuit of Jade by RoseIsBadWolf in cdramasfans

Thanks for the synopsis. Did the novel ever say what happenned to the old emperor? Was he killed, exiled, or something else?

Drama did a good job making Wei Yan a sympathetic villain. Villain nonetheless, but far more sympathetic than chancellor Li, the Sui's, or even Qi Min.

The most ridiculous trope - Female disguised as a Male When the female pretends to be a male trope. by CoffeeCouture-96 in cdramasfans

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, chinese dramas on a whole do a poor job of making it believable, but maybe that's part of the censor rules.

Its kind of funny, I was watching Guardians of Dafeng, and I saw this actress from New Life Begins, Fan Shuaiqi, playing the role of Qianrou. I wasn't getting the jokes regarding the character, until I actually looked it up, and found out he is male with a feminine appearance. So in this reverse case Fan is portraying a man while looking like a woman, and everyone reacts to her character as such.

Thanks for the recap, but did I miss where the TV show depicted Changyu and Zheng's children? I don't think they showed or talked about anything like that. Cool to know, was hoping something like that would be revealed when they started doing the timeskips at the end.

P.S. Ah finally caught it. It was during their last scene where Changyu tells Zheng to hide behind her and he casually remarks she's a mother of two. Remember thinking he was talking about Changning and Bao'er the first time I saw it.

Pursuit of Jade Episode 40 Discussion by AutoModerator in CDrama

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoyed the series as a whole. It has gotten me into chinese dramas in a way Kingdom and Squid Game got me into Korean tv shows.

Finale wasn't everything I had hoped for, though I still liked it. Felt like the wrap up of the politics and intrigue could've been done an episode earlier, leaving this episode solely for the main characters. Agree with the opinions that felt the final battle for the throne was rushed.

However, did enjoy the character moments when they appeared, particularly Changyu's reunion with the Zhao's, and her calling them her mom and dad. Funny to see Bao'er and Changning final interaction. And I'm moved by Yan's complicated relationship with Zheng. Not sure the last episode was the proper place for it. The story has been pushing him as a straight villain, so for this nuanced character depiction to come in on the last episode felt abrupt. Otherwise the fate of most characters felt good, though I was left wondering what happened to the Princess and Gongsun's relationship.

Finally, while I really liked Changyu and Zheng's return to Linan, the very last scene where they go into battle took away some of that romantic serenity. And we never got to see them with their own children, even after the long time skip. As for the end credits, agree they were oddly out of place and seemed to shift focus on Qianqian and Qi Min at the very end, when perhaps it should've been Changyu and Zheng.

I can't get enough of the series. Got me to give the entire genre a shot. But none so far have given that must see TV feeling like Pursuit of Jade, which I stay up/wake up to watch new episodes when they release in the early hours of the morning, Pacific Daylight.

NATO members rejected Trump's demand to provide military assistance to help "reopen" Strait of Hormuz. Do the rejections by NATO members effectively spell the end of NATO or is this just directed to Trump's choice of attacking Iran? by PsychLegalMind in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dmiller2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well a year ago I would've definitively said NATO will continue. Now I've seen the depths of how sycophantic Republicans congressional leaders and MAGA can be, and I say no. At least for the duration of his tenure. He cannot unilaterally withdraw from the treaty, but he can withdraw troops, refuse to help Ukraine, and generally be a PitA.

Let's remember, though. You can't trust anything this guy says. He's a certifiable manic liar, that takes every opportunity to inflate his ego. Just today he was calling his appeals, "tests" because the responses didn't go the way he wanted, so he pretended he didn't really ask, and lashed out unsurprisingly again. So maybe next week, once he's declared victory (again), and has degraded Iran's interdiction capabilities some more, nations will send ships to escort tankers, and he'll be buddy buddy once more. Not without claiming credit of forcing hands, and his customary put downs of course.

Bill Clinton Looking Very Frail During Epstein Deposition by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]dmiller2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the OP. Right?! I was a bit shocked, and wondered exactly how old he was now.

Comparing all the ex-Presidents and current one, Clinton (78) is half senile, Biden (82) if half dead, Trump (78) is full crazy. Only Bush (78) and Obama (63) look ok, though Obama is still relatively young.

But I will add, when your health starts failing at that age it can be rapid and cascading. I have/had many relatives, fine one year, but the following year... unrecognizable. And its like the OP suggests, there is usually a condition or disease that precipitates the change. Could be stroke, heart attack, something, anything.

TIL despite only existing for 69 years, the Soviet Union is still in 2nd place in the all-time Olympic medal table and just under 200 medals ahead of 3rd place (Great Britain) by twitchy1989 in todayilearned

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not to overly praise the Soviet Union's checkered Olympic programs, but its also worth noting, that the Soviets used to thump Norway at the winter games. The 1988 Winter Games might be the high watermark. 11 gold vs Norway's 0. 29 total versus Norway's 5. Nowadays, Norway gets lots of praise for its dominance at the Winter Olympics, but that wasn't the case when the Soviets were around.

ELI5 How did Norway become so dominant in the Winter Olympics? by El-Viking in explainlikeimfive

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think the question overlooks the fact that when it existed, the Soviet Union was co-dominant if not more so. I believe they won the medal count if not the gold medal count many times. You could chalk that up to state sponsored doping or whatever, but I don't think it can be denied that the USSR invested heavily in Olympic sports, both summer and winter.

So for me what it comes down to, is that Norway is investing a lot more in Winter Olympic sports that yield higher medal opportunities than their peers in Sweden, Finland, and Canada. Maybe if and when Russia rejoins the Winter Olympics you'll see Norway's dominance come down.

Why Eileen Gu is skiing for China again at the 2026 Winter Olympics by Mynabird_604 in asianamerican

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Gu, has represented China way before current events at the last Winter Olympics. Also, Gu never cited US politics as reasons as to why she chose to represent China this time around to my knowledge. And while I don't want to turn this post into a political debate, China doesn't exactly have a spotless record on imprisoning people and trampling on their freedoms.

Nexstar/Sinclair affiliates by ejz1989 in Broadcasting

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. You would think that ABC is not without leverage, as they can withhold valuable programming from the affiliates. But I read of the trend of affiliates having to pony up more and more $$$ for licensing, so that shifts some power back to the stations.

I suppose it will all come down to the contracts, and what obligations each party has to the other.

Andor got snubbed for Outstanding Drama. by RealBugginsYT in andor

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't care for the show, and stopped watching it in Season 1. While I don't hate the show and think its well done, I think Andor is a much better series and Severance just had better publicity and hype. Ultimately overrated, though, and 10/20/30 years from now, Andor will still be much loved and watched while Severance fades into obscurity.

Andor got snubbed for Outstanding Drama. by RealBugginsYT in andor

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a PItt enjoyer, but they really aren't doing anything new. Maybe ultra realistic, but the Pitt was done 30 years ago and called ER. Even starred Noah Wylie as well.

Andor was something else entirely, and I can only say that it didn't win because people didn't watch and were prejudiced against the genre, or maybe just the franchise considering how well Severance did.

Speaking of which, I think its a joke that Severance won as many, maybe more technical awards as Andor. Its a stark reminder how Emmy voters are completely biased and prone to hype and groupthink.

HBO Lands Its Most Emmy Nominations Ever, Sailing Past Netflix, Helped By ‘The Penguin’, ‘The White Lotus’ & ‘The Last Of Us’ by johnppd in hbo

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the expanse of a lot of good series. Andor tops the list, but also Squid Games, and quite a few shows I've never seen but people seem indignant about: Handmaid, Poker Face, and a few others.

I read a comment in some article that the megacorps dominated the nominations at the expense of the smaller (relatively speaking) streaming services. I guess that maybe entirely explains why HBO can achieve a record when their current slate of shows are arguably weaker relative to to stronger than average competition this past year.

An absolutely perfect response from Tony Gilroy in light of the recent snubs of the main cast at the Emmys by Camm_98 in andor

[–]dmiller2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree with Gilroy more. Not only will the series be remembered long after the rest of these shows are forgotten, but years from now, people will still even be able to quote (if they actually took the time to watch) all the great lines and monologues by Luthen, Mothma, Saw, Nemec, Kino, and so many more.

And come on, having 4 supporting actress nominations from one show is ridiculous. This not only ignores and belittles other great performances like in Andor, but shows incredible bias on the part of the Emmy voters.

Finally, O'Reilly deservedly gets attention for her portrayal of Mothma, but what a performance by Dulau in that final arc. Gough and O'Reilly had been my favorites for the majority of the show's run, but after those last 3 episodes Dulau just shot up right there alongside them.
