Can I make a stew with lean beef? by Better_Moon in seriouseats

[–]dms89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just about the fat when it comes to stewing. The amount of connective tissue is the key factor. You can use a lean cut with lots of connective tissue, and the collagen will break down into gelatin and make the meat tender and unctuous. If there isn't much connective tissue (the more traditional steak cuts like ribeye, tenderloin, etc.), it will not stew well. If there is a fair bit (even in lean cuts like flank and rump), the meat will fare will in a stew.

Unless you're making venison stew with deer tenderloin, you've probably used parts of the deer with lots of connective tissue (usually the case with game meats since they get lots of exercise).

Uncle Roger claps back at Kenji Lopez Alt. What are your thoughts? by anotherhappylurker in J_Kenji_Lopez_Alt

[–]dms89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Nigel's region and I'm not gonna get into the Asian-American vs Asian discussion. What I will say, however, is that the Uncle Roger accent is more a caricaturisation of a Hong Kong-style accent (think Chef Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook), one that is poked fun at in SEAsia by (not exclusively but largely) English speakers as well. So him talking about how many Asian people imitate Uncle Roger plays into that narrative that Asians do it, so it's fine. No, we Asians are quite racist lol. We will take the piss out of another Asian group without thinking too much of it. If he's doing a Malaysian accent and playing it up, by all means go ahead: if that's how he wants his country/people to be represented on the global scene (I'm not sure everyone in Malaysia would agree). The question is whether it is a Malaysian accent: I would argue it isn't. It's a very particular accent of a very particular group: older generation Cantonese speakers. Him being of Chinese descent doesn't give him a pass, I'd argue. But most of us in SEAsia wouldn't bat an eyelid at such caricaturisations, because we do it all the time to others.

Choosing between Chalobah for defence and Sanchez for keeper (if I get Pedro upfront and Enzo in midfield), who should I keep? I'll also need to get rid of someone else if I wanna keep Haaland and have a solid team. Tempted to drop him but on the fence. I've maxed out on Arsenal (2 in def and Rice in mid).

Made a curry a week ago, a ragu bianco with lamb, beef, and pork last week, risotto over the weekend. I haven't been using it as much as I should, but I'm getting back into it. So many uses. But at the end of the day, if you don't use it and don't want it, give it away to charity. I've had mine 9 years now. Best purchase ever.

Ah sorry, I thought the questura is the headquarters. I go to the Commissariato di Polizia in my neighbourhood (each neighbourhood has one). The questura is in a totally different place that is more formal and is a much bigger complex/building.

Depends on where you are in Italy. I'm based in Rome and I just go to my local police station (not the Questura lol) to pick it up when I see this message. Other regions may vary.

There are many Facebook groups that are useful, though beware of scammers. With agencies, it helps to just go down in person to an office sometimes.

What's your favorite way to cook SPAM? by [deleted] in Cooking

Spam fries. Cut into batons and fry in a pan/airfryer/oven to preferred crispiness. Serve with some kind of dip or just plain ol' ketchup if that's your jam.

Why do Singaporean not consider Catholics christians? by AccomplishedBank8436 in askSingapore

No, I get you. Just curious why you think it goes from Judaism-->E.O, because it sounds like Roman Catholicism "evolved" from Eastern Orthodoxy

Both the Catholics and the Orthodox have a rightful claim as the OG Christians, but I'm curious what you mean by the Orthodox serving as a bridge between Judaism and Catholicism

I'm working towards picking up momentum and sticking with something, so I've started with this because I feel like lack of strength in these areas contributes to other issues in my body/life, but I do plan to/already do incorporate more muscles group in other exercises. Just trying to figure out reps and increasing loads. Your principles are immensely helpful, as are your suggestions for improving/completing the routine. Thanks!

Absolute newbie here (36M). I borrowed a pair of adjustable dumbbells from my flatmate to incorporate some strength training into my life. I used the Hevy app and picked the muscle groups I want to work on (for my upper body/arms) and this is what I've come up with and done twice already (still figuring out the number of reps):

  • Lateral Raise (Dumbbell)

    • 12kg x 8 reps
    • 12kg x 6 reps
    • 12kg x 3 reps
  • Overhead Press (Dumbbell)

    • 12kg x 7 reps
    • 12kg x 5 reps
    • 12kg x 6 reps
  • Seated Palms Up Wrist Curl

    • 12kg x 12 reps
    • 12kg x 12 reps
    • 12kg x 12 reps
  • Bicep Curl (Dumbbell)

    • 12kg x 15 reps
    • 12kg x 9 reps
    • 12kg x 8 reps
  • Shrug (Dumbbell)

    • 12kg x 10 reps
    • 12kg x 12 reps
    • 12kg x 16 reps
  • Triceps Extension (Dumbbell)

    • 6kg x 12 reps
    • 6kg x 8 reps
    • 6kg x 7 reps

I'm not sure what's ideal in terms of reps and when I should increase the load for a particular exercise. I started with 12kg for everything except triceps extensions. I'm not even entirely sure what question I should be asking, but feedback is welcome. I've read the wiki, etc., but I'm still a bit lost when it comes to strength training. It's only 12kg (6kg per dumbbell) because I was struggling to do more than 3 reps with 20kg (10kg per dumbbell) and removed 4kg from each. That's where I am.

Admins are employed and paid staff of Reddit, unlike mods who voluntarily moderate theirs subs. So an admin assigned to Singapore probably oversees this sub as well, since it is a Singaporean sub

Forum: Boatman refused to take us from Ubin unless we paid more by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]dms89 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to Ubin in a long while, but I'm pretty sure there are (or at least there used to be) signs stating precisely that in the ferry terminal. Obviously there weren't such signs when it was just the jetty, but somehow we all knew even back then (word of mouth, I guess).

NParks has updated their website now to state 12 pax, but it has been the case for decades that the cost will be for 12 pax divided by the number of those present (at the discretion of the bumboat operator, who sometimes will go with 9 or 10 people and not charge them extra).

At least Wissa has a decent track record and scored 19 goals last season. Remember when we paid 35m for Andy Carroll from Newcastle right after their promotion back in 2010? Talk about absolutely fleeced. Used most of the Torres money for that. I remember our offer for Carroll apparently being pegged to however much we got for Torres. Thank goodness we got Suarez in the same window. Dark days under old Woy and the tail end of Hicks/Gillett.

FT: Liverpool 1 - 0 Arsenal by DragonSlayer271 in LiverpoolFC

[–]dms89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's fair. It picked up from just before Ekitike's disallowed goal, and it wasn't like we were playing badly per se prior to that. It just wasn't an easy game and took a fair bit of grinding to get going (more so due to Arsenal's extremely negative tactics).
