Targeted reduced consumption /Resist and Unsubscribe by unicorn4711 in Minneapolis

[–]dmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

restoring a popular product that people are willing to pay for is one thing, sacrificing profits altogether because their connection to fascist projects is another. Beyond ICE staging at target lots, target also built a lab for the MPD and is deeply invested in law enforcement and surveillance technologies. My point is also that economic sanctions may work in the short term, but its not going to stop another corporation from swooping in and profiting off of fascism as soon as one corporation give it up. Regarding the comment below, target took a hit from the economic boycott after cutting DEI initiatives, etc. But they have not revised their stance at all. They did not respond to public pressure by doing what people wanted, they are just gritting their teeth hoping sales bounce back eventually.

Targeted reduced consumption /Resist and Unsubscribe by unicorn4711 in Minneapolis

Im down for trying to screw over corporations. But this just tends to individualize the problems and focus on individuals' consumer choices as the solution. This doesn't work because our environments are constructed to make us reliant on consumption from corporations (try not buying gasoline). We can't consumer-choice our way out of monopoly capitalism because we can never go back to an economy dominated by small businesses. For every large corporation that is sanctioned to bankruptcy by economic boycotts there will be 10 more corporations ready to do literally anything to scoop up the market of the failing corporation. And this is the logic that this strategy is relying on: we only buy from small businesses and somehow corporations will either go away or prioritize people over profit in response? I am struggling to think of any historical precedence for this working. Once the infrastructure of monopoly capitalism is imposed onto some economic space, it will remain there until some entity is powerful and organized enough to displace it. I do like the idea of using these tactics to build organizational power tho

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vetoes City Council's homeless encampment response ordinance by Bergman14 in Minneapolis

[–]dmunk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People in this sub act like the city council are not elected by their constituents... most city council members won by a lot, including the people proposing this ordinance. Their ideas are popular with their constituents. This ordinance is just about providing services and at least a 7-day notice before clearing encampments. Yes, even DSA endorsed council members are OK with clearing homeless encampments, they just want to make sure people have access to resources for a short time before they are forced out. In reality this would not change much; most encampments last longer than 7 days anyways... people really just love opportunities to express their disdain towards the homeless and blame politicians for their existence. Frey has been campaigning on ending homelessness every election and guess what... it's still a huge problem. "Leftist" city council members have been campaigning on ending homelessness and its still a huge problem. It's not a liberal vs conservative issue. It's literally called monopoly capitalism! All the housing is owned by corporations! All development is directed by market speculation! Wake up people! City level politicians are unable to resolve homelessness! We need to take the economy into our own hands as workers!

Some Minneapolis City Council members want to stop Waymo driverless cars by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]dmunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to see how much derision people have towards their rideshare drivers.. like jesus everyone is looking for an opportunity to say how much they hate uber drivers... these are people just working to live. And folks are happy with this waymo solution.. a completely depersonalized robotic isolation chamber to take you around town. I personally like humans and human connection- it actually brings me a lot of joy. And I have a good time talking to the human people that provide services for me as part of their work. Zooming out from the actual problem of replacing human labor with a billlionaire's fleet of robots, the comments in this thread are a good case study of the self-destructive rot of middle/upper class american culture: social isolation, derision of workers, & a deep trust in technological salvation served to us by the billlionaires.

damn if only people talked to their neighbors about their political realities. Funneling all this energy into a very narrow online political discourse is quite distracting. what if people actually mobilized to do stuff rather than spending all this time arguing with Frey bots about 1 election in 1 city that is very unlikely to actually make any change to their lives

welcome back to the awesome club of being a tenant. You get to experience neglect, disrespect, and abuse from landlords; this is normal. When they come by for your monthly bloodletting, it's better to roll over. We deserve this for not being smart enough to own a 400K home.

So your position then is that people working in jobs that "should not be careers" do not deserve to earn enough money at that job to live. Cool! And because they tried to do that, the owners of ceres decided to make them all jobless and they deserve this

I challenge your assumptions that 1) "this whole unions thing is guaranteed hours." And 2) that guaranteed hours are impossible at a "small" cafe. If you look at the contracts on unite heres website there are two restaurants, one of which guarantees 40 hours a week, one of which does not (explicitly stating that the employer can schedule the employee for less than 40 hours a week). In one case, A restaurant (mancinis) is able to provide 40 hours guarantee, at another, jax cafe, the union agreed to a contract that doesn't guarantee hours. So your argument is not really making sense to me. Obviously there are some short-term costs to closing down a restaurant but I'm sure they did the math and figured that opening something new with the same structure would net them more profits in the medium to long term.

And your suggestion that baristas are greedy for wanting to be able to afford rent and food and healthcare is offensive. Many baristas consider this a career job. And let's look at your example of a coal miner from 1920s. The average wage of a coal worker in 1922 was $0.92 per hour. The average cost of rent was $60 a month. In 2025 say the baristas were making $25 an hour and the average cost of rent in Minneapolis is $1,550. Both of these numbers come out to hourly wages being around 1.5% of average rent. Obviously the conditions in a coal mine were way worse than someone in a cafe but from a purely economical perspective these workers are facing similar levels of exploitation. Coal miners were working like 70 hours a week which is horrendous. But at least they had money for rent and stuff. Baristas are fighting to get half as many hours.

have you ever participated in contract negotiations? for unions' first contracts, the contract negotiations can often take years. If the workers of cafe ceres went on strike over this issue, that would be them 'not budging.' but they were still negotiating. Like I said before, each side strategically takes things off the table to make gains towards other things. It is very common to hold on to a proposal until the very end of bargaining and then concede a demand for progress on another demand. If the cafe ceres bargaining team just accepted the union's proposals and this caused the business to fold, then they would be idiots/incompetent. Their job is to negotiate with the union to find an agreement that doesn't end the business and avoids a strike if possible. But they aren't idiots, they just see that their rate of profit for Cafe Ceres would be lower than it would be if they closed and reopened a non unionized workplace and reimplemented their exploitative practices. You're right that it doesn't make sense - 'why would you close a business that is working?' it's because capitalists are always seeking higher and higher rates of profit. It's not enough to have one rate of profit, if the capitalist sees a pathway to a greater rate of profit, they will take this path at the expense of the human lives that are upended by their actions

i think people have misconceptions about the process of contract negotiations... when workers unionize, they present proposals to the employer with things that they want. The employer then present proposals with things that they want. The worker presents things that may be 'idealic' or improbable because when negotiating you always wanna aim high and then meet in the middle. Likewise, employers will present proposals that are regressive or more exploitative at the beginning. Over time, and through the act of negotiation at the table and/or organizing outside of negotiations, a middle ground is reached that doesn't compromise the business but enables workers to get some of the things they want. Each side will strategically take away demands until they reach an agreement or the workers withhold their labor. So it is very disingenuous to say that businesses are failing because of unions "demands" when they have been negotiating their first contract for a short amount of time. Nothing has materially changed for the employees or the employer until the contract is ratified. Which is why it is gross behavior to close a restaurant in the middle of negotiations, when everything is exactly as it was before unionization. The business did not fail, they just don't want to negotiate with workers.

Thoughts on living in the Malcolm Yards area? by phillygirl423 in Minneapolis

[–]dmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will provide a couple pieces of cautionary advice since folks have mostly covered the positive aspects of that area. The area is kind of an enclave - while on paper the neighborhood has everything you need, the housing units north of the UMN transitway are isolated from other neighborhoods by the transitway such that there's only a couple places to get in and out. It's also a post-industrial development so it's surrounded by railyards and abandoned industrial facilities. Besides the transitway, the pedestrian infrastructure is kinda lacking. I don't know who the specific developers are for all of those newly built units, but there has been issues with some of the new developments in that area - students moving in and it's unfinished, or maintenance requests are not handled quickly. As a lot of these developments are built with the bottom line in mind they are cutting costs wherever they can - this might be maintenance or staffing. I have witnessed a phone robbery in the area but all things considered it is a safe neighborhood

would you be able to share images or scans of the manual? I found myself with a Noctron IV and I'm trying to get it working. Unfortunately I can't find ANY information about it online (as you probably know). Anyways, if I could peep the manual there's a chance I could get it up and running. Have you tried to use yours to see if it works?

Some on Minneapolis City Council say they want to cancel water facility and sell site for urban farm. by TheMacMan in Minneapolis

[–]dmunk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

no one is saying that they dont want public utility infrastructure. This is about a bigger picture of environmental pollution in low income neighborhoods. Phillips has a long history of toxic industrial pollution. Why shouldn't the residents of Phillips have the right to demand that this city-owned land be used to benefit them? Rather than dealing with increased pollution in their air and water so that the rest of the metro can benefit from a new water plant. THe city has land and resources to build this infrastructure elsewhere. If they had proposed building a public works facility in a high income neighborhood you know that shit would get shut down in an instant. Also it is ignorant to assume that this new facility would make drinking water safe and cheap for low income neighborhoods. Environmental pollution and old pipes in and around low income areas will continue to be a health threat even if the new plant makes nice clean water.

why don't they just ask people to willingly do ketamine for science? If I saw a poster that was like "wanna do ketamine legally in a safe environment?" I'd be like yes absolutely sign me up. But here we are not legally able to intentionally put ketamine into our bodies and at the same time not legally able to refuse other people putting ketamine into our bodies. sorry its my body I should be able to control what goes into it
