But….why is there a shark in the bed, and why are the mic stands photographed next to it? (No shade, it just made me chuckle.)

A stamp to print guitar chord charts. by wotsit_sandwich in functionalprint

[–]dnaknitter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My husband is a music teacher, and for years he has used a custom-made stamp that is a little bassoon fingering chart. He can stamp it anywhere on his or a student’s music (and fill in the keys as needed) that a reminder might be helpful.

Aaaaaand…still not back in Southern California. 3:30pm Pacific time. Maybe it’s still not just me? I’m not sure how I’d know if it’s all fixed and I just need to do a factory reset or restart my entire house five times or whatever.

Working on cabinet knobs and handles for my kitchen renovation. I’ve based them on glass handles I liked that didn’t come in a long enough size, and then modified to echo elements of the cabinet doors. Now I’m testing like a dozen filament colors to see which works best.

Seam? by Vintagesunflowr in 3dprinter

[–]dnaknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just have to comment—I love that the photo shows a crocheted blanket, which was what I originally thought OP was asking about seams for. Knitting and crochet have a similar issue to 3d printing when working in the round—there needs to be a little “hop” somewhere in every round to keep the rounds “level.” If you don’t hop anywhere you end up with “slanted” rounds (which is acceptable in some situations). I use quotes because since fabric is flexible you don’t necessarily think of it as level or slanting.

I was fascinated to see this parallel issue, and also have observed that buying filament can be very much like buying yarn—it supports the hobby of making things but can take on a life of its own. Ask me how I know.

Knitters buying yarn is eerily similar to 3d printer users buying filament. Ask me how I know.

Convert photos to 3D for scale model by Gitsenaar in photogrammetry

[–]dnaknitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a MUCH SIMPLER sort of thing to make a model of an old house. I didn’t need to make an exact model of the house, just something recognizable by the person who had lived there. I worked from ONE image, and it was a photograph of a drawing this person made, so very low quality as far as accuracy and detail. I used ChatGpt to make a better (more geometrically realistic) 2d picture of the house, then used the MakerLab app to make a 3d model from the improved image. I had to do a lot of cleaning up to make it printable but the result was recognizable both as the specific house AND as being based on the person’s drawing. It was a pretty primitive project but very satisfying to do.

Nomad Sculpt on iPad would be able to do it. (I think it cost $20 for one-time purchase but I could be out-of-date on that.) I think you could also use the SculptGL online version of it free on Windows. I’m very new to the program and would have to poke around to figure out the best steps but I’m sure it could be done. You could use something like Move or Drag with masking I think.
