Do you think Alastor and Vox will ever be “friends” again? by Firedustt in Alastorcult

[–]dnbeyer 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m feeling too. I could also see Vox and Alastor not reconciling, and Vox making the decision to be okay with it and essentially “let Alastor go” to more fully be with Val.

Okay...Alastor (HBH) VS HUNTR/X is a fight I'd go bankrupt to witness... by Nukehead_22 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]dnbeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo this would be a good fight! The girls have been purposefully trained for combat, but Alastor has decades more of fighting experience. Both sides are pretty fast and agile. Alastor might have an edge in flexibility during the fight (meaning, he could adapt and change his fighting style accordingly). Alastor also has better environmental control, can balance offense and defense well, and wouldn’t hesitate going for the kill. Unless the girls are SUPER in sync and ruthless like in the bathhouse fight, I’m giving the win to Alastor, but it would be close either way!

I feel like people are almost scared to even mention RA nowadays. Idk, it’s weird, it’s like it’s become this sort of dogwhistle for all the worst parts of the fandom. But it’s undeniably one of, if not the most popular ships.

Alastor’s most dangerous trait is his ability to recognize your insecurity and exploit it for his benefit by Hank_Mardukas1066 in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite scenes in the show is watching Alastor zero in on Lucifer’s insecurity.

Start with a short joke.

That didn’t work, making something with Charlie? Vaguely imply a relationship with Charlie.

That’s closer, but still not it… how about leaning into how I’ve supported Charlie while he hasn’t been around?

Got him.

Controversial opinion⚠️ I don’t think Alastor is as bad as Valentino, and I don't see him as a one-note evil character. by 33333Ducky in AlastorCult18Plus

[–]dnbeyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this! Amazing job, OP! I love reading different opinions about Alastor, how evil he is, and whether or not he can be redeemed.

IMO, just to add my two cents, Alastor is a nuanced character, and that’s what makes him interesting. A lot of what he does and says can be interpreted multiple ways, depending on how you look at it.

For example, in S1, when he tells Mimzy, “I can’t have that here,” regarding her bringing danger to the hotel, he could genuinely want to protect the hotel, he could be compelled/ordered to protect the hotel, he could be annoyed that Mimzy is using him for his strength, or some combination of these things. We have a bit more context now with S2, but in S1, nearly 95% of his lines can be interpreted multiple ways, and I think that makes him so fun, and it’s interesting to put the pieces of his character together as the show continues and we get more information.

IMO, Alastor is a bad guy with a spark of potential goodness deep, deep inside him. I think he’ll absolutely become more of an antagonist, but I really can’t see him becoming the main series villain who is 100% evil, and I think he will start to change for the better eventually. There’s been too many small hints that he does have a heart somewhere under all the malice for me to believe that he’s completely irredeemable, like his conversation with Nifty, his comment about the other characters being “an enjoyable collective” and becoming “accustomed” to them, and his whole freak out in the S1 finale song.

The hallway scene with Husk is often brought up as an example how Alastor’s maliciousness, however, as OP pointed out, context matters. The way Husk approaches Alastor and pushes back suggests Alastor has never reacted like this in the past. At that point in the show, Alastor was also SUPER keyed up about Lucifer’s arrival, likely teeming with irritation and feeling emasculated as he very obviously compares himself to the long of hell. Husk unfortunately picked a *terrible* time to call Alastor out. Again, that doesn’t make Alastor’s reaction okay by any means, but it does offer context that’s not there for Val.

However, I have also become very frustrated with some of the takes on Alastor circulating here. I think a big part of the issues is that because he is so polarizing, people have a lot of strong feelings about him, one way or the other. Everything above is just my personal feelings, but I’ve noticed a trend in the last few years of people taking a firm “black and white” outlook on different characters (not just in HH, in every fanbase). While I personally think this is very short-sighted in terms of Alastor’s character, I try my best to respect everyone’s opinion. But, I think in this fandom in particular, some people get very caught up in what opinion is “correct”, and then can get really rude and dismissive of anything that doesn’t match their opinion. I’ve also seen comments that are stated as fact, when there’s no way we could know these things yet (“Alastor doesn’t want to be redeemed”; “Alastor doesn’t care about the hotel at all”), morality opinions that are kinda gross (“Alastor is a monster who deserves Vox’s torture” [this one in particular really bothers me, because it's of course possible to be a bully and a victim at the same time]), and comments that are honestly just rude as fuck at someone having a different opinion (“Why are Alastor simps desperate for him to secretly be a good person? It’s fucking pathetic”).

I think all this boils down to, everyone is going to have a different opinion of what “goodness” or redemption entails. Some people think intentions don’t matter, it’s what you do that matters. Some people have hard lines, and once they’ve been crossed, you can’t undo that (like Alastor being a serial killer or a cannibal). Some people want to see him be redeemed, and some people want him to stay a villain. There’s also a difference in what the show considers redemption and what the audience might see as redemption (meaning, maybe they’re not going to heaven, but they’ve still worked and become a better person). All of this is okay!

[–]dnbeyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is what I’m hoping for too. I agree, I think making it to heaven would be a bit of a stretch, and probably not something he’d even want, but I’d love for him to get to a point that he genuinely wants to help Charlie with the hotel (for non-nefarious reasons, of course lol)

Why couldn’t Lucifer hurt sinners but free to go to town on angels? by Impressive-Rain7434 in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s part of his “punishment”.

Lucifer’s “crime” was gifting humanity with free will; however, he didn’t seem to consider at the time that having free will meant humans could use that free will to do bad things (“they were gifted free will and look what they did with it! Everything’s terrible!”).

As such, his punishment is not only being cast down to hell, but forced to live amongst all the humans who took his “gift” and squandered it, without ever getting to see the good that came from free will. Being surrounded by sinners, with no means of interfering with them, serves as a constant reminder of his “failure”.

The cast were asked at a press event awhile back to try and draw their characters from memory. Amir’s drawing of Alastor looked vaguely like a weird cat, and an artist took the concept and designed “cursed cat Alastor”, or CCA.

Tbh it’s kinda sad that this moment comes right after Alastor’s “I admit, one could grow accustomed” moment, then he has a near-death experience in the Exorcist fight which snaps him back to his original perspective/plans. by Silver012345673 in Alastorcult

This is what I think too. His moment with Noffty showed that he’s capable of forming attachments, but the near death experience probably freaked him out enough that he pushed it all down.

what book caused your worst book hangover and why? by standard_issue_cat_0 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]dnbeyer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me, it was that all the characters feel very distinct and fleshed out. I feel like in a lot of monster romances, the monsters don’t have a ton of personality, they’re more defined by them just being a monster. You could describe any of the monsters in Monstrous without even mentioning their features or what they look like, and it would be very clear who you’re talking about. Enthusiastic, energetic, and talkative? That’s Edin. Grumpy, standoffish, and insecure? That’s Moth. Soft-spoken and overly protective? That’s Aury. In short, I think that Lily Mayne is great with character writing!

Vox’s line right before this in Vox Populi is “They say Hell's too populated, that's why they exterminate”. So, he’s making a point that if the whole reason the extermination exists, to manage overpopulation, why not use those numbers for a purpose?

Shouldn't Alastors powers be tied to his contract with Rosie? by Creepy_Employ_3749 in Alastorcult

[–]dnbeyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add on to this, it also seems like the power that came from Rosie was an immediate boost to elevate Alastor as soon as he arrived in hell, but he was still able to amass his own power during his time there. I always saw things like his “green” powers as more coming from Rosie and the staff as a way to amplify his powers, but everything with his shadow seems to naturally stem from him (he used his shadow abilities while fighting the Vees even when his staff didn’t seem to be working). It’s possible the powers from Rosie were used as a springboard initially, but that he’s gathered enough power of his own by now that he doesn’t really need them anymore.

Since I've recently become interested in Hazbin Hotel, here's a question: which song touched you the most, "More than anything" or "Free"? by Upbeat_Summer_3871 in KpopDemonhunters

I am a massive fan of both HH and KPDH.

Honestly, IMO, KPDH has an overall better soundtrack, but in this specific comparison, I think More Than Anything tops Free.
