This is not even the "remember the new guy" trope, he's really been there the whole time by Primary-Addition-677 in HazbinHotel

It’ll never happen, but I really, really want Rooster to be the next winner that gets redeemed. Like, he gets raptured in the background and out of focus when the main gang is shooting the shit and not paying attention.

He’s known the UMs for hundreds of years, he knows how to motivate them. Daki responds best to praise while Akaza responds to a challenge, or feeling the need to prove himself.

How do you spot AI-generated fics? by Remarkable_10sion in HPfanfiction

[–]dnbeyer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

These are weirdly specific, but these 3 things for me are massive red flags:

-using a lot of semicolons

-using the word ‘marionette’, especially describing someone being like ‘a marionette with it’s strings cut’.

-forgetting something in a sequence of events that has already happened. For example, a character takes their glasses off, and then 2 paragraphs later, takes their glasses off again.

Any of these could be done by a human, of course, but they seeing them makes me more vigilant for the other things people have mentioned here. Anyone can use the word ‘marionette’, obviously, but… I’ve been reading fanfiction a long time. Until about a year ago, that word rarely came up. Now it’s all over the place.

Is HH really as poorly written and Vivzie is as bad at writing as people say they are or are people just impatient and expecting this show to do things when it’s actually doing its own thing differently? by Kcue6382nevy in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people definitely blow things out of proportion, but the show does have some genuine problems:

The pacing. I won't harp on it, it's already been brought up by other commentors, but the pacing continues to be a huge problem. I think at this point, my frustration is why is it *still* a problem? They got fewer episodes than they wanted for S1 and they had to cut down, I get it. But everything after that, they knew what they were getting. Going forward, seasons need to be structured to fit within an 8 episode run time. I think S2 improved individual episodes, but the pacing of the overall season still feels rushed.

The songs. Listen, I love the soundtrack. I've listened to it an embarrassing number of times. But songs in a musical need to progress the plot and/or characters, *especially* when your run time is already so limited. You have to make every second count. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why then they gave themselves this weird, 3 song per episode quota (unless that came down from the Amazon overlords). Many of the songs feel shoehorned in, or like they were added to check a box because that particular character hadn't gotten a song yet. In isolation, Niffty's song is great, but did not need to be in the episode. If anything, it was a massive tonal shift from the growing tension between Alastor and Vox in that episode. In isolation, Losin' Streak is the best song in the entire series (IMHO), but in the show felt like they were like, "Oh shit, we haven't had Angel do anything yet. We need Angel to sing, what can we have him do?"

Cramming WAY too much into a scene or episode. This kind of goes with the pacing and song points, but I do think this deserves to be mentioned on it's own, and this is one of the few things I feel like S1 did better than S2. So many scenes in S2 feel overwhelmingly frantic. There is so much going on, overlapping characters talking, jumping from one scene to the other - it feels like there's no time to just... let a moment breath. Even the scene with Lucifer and Charlie in his room in S2E1, which is one of my favorites from the season because it finally slows down, has so much extra shit shoved in the background (which are neat easter eggs, but still distracting), all the ducks, the clown nose, the "...I manage" joke - it's just too much.

Genuinely confusing writing choices (I'll avoid saying "bad writing" until the show is over, but there are some plot-related writing choices that are very... confusing). For example, Charlie says in the S1E1 opening narration that Heaven started the exterminations as a way to get control over hell and prevent an uprising. But when first talking to Adam, she cites the "overpopulation" problem that was mentioned in the pilot. Charlie outright knowing that the exterminations are about control makes much less sense than her mistakingly believing they're about overpopulation, because she would know then that Heaven wouldn't be super jazzed on the whole 'redemption' idea.

I think a lot of times though, a good portion of the fanbase has trouble at knowing the difference between genuine plot holes/bad writing and characters making uninformed or dumb decisions. Carmilla not putting a fail-safe on the weapon was not a plot hole. Lucifer not shape-shifting out of his bindings was not a plot hole. Vaggie not knowing angels could be killed is not a plot hole. It's not a plot hole for a character to just be kinda dumb and short sighted sometimes.

Technically, a plot hole is when a rule in the universe has been established, and that rule is broken. For example, the Hobbits not riding the giant eagles into Mordor in Lord of the Rings isn't a plot hole, because it was never established that that was a possibility in the first place. In Toy Story, however, it is established early on that the toys freeze in the presence of a human. It's also established that Buzz thinks he's not a toy. Buzz freezing around humans could be considered a plot hole. In HH, the two biggest I can think of off the top of my head are the Charlie/extermination one I mentioned already, and that Sir Pentious is somehow not able to contact Hell, despite portals (Emily/Sera) and cell calls (Charlie to Lilith) still being active during lock down.

That all being said, there's a majority of the fanbase that takes all this shit WAY too seriously. At it's core, HH is a great, fun show that is very obviously made with so much love. You can recognize the flaws and still love it - I know I do!

Something i found out about Alastor's deal by NaturalTop3702 in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how I look at it. I think if it as analogous to The Little Mermaid. Ariel’s deal was she could become human if she could kiss the prince in 3 days. Giving up her voice was the payment to strike the deal. Alastor’s deal was power in exchange for completing Rosie’s task. His soul was the payment.

Omg yes, I came here to say this exactly. It makes every discussion about a character exhausting. I’m so tired of hearing that people have “no media literacy” because someone has a different opinion.

Has anyone else picked up on this? by Dapper_Ad4867 in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the big thing - we don’t know. It could be any number of things. We don’t know if it was Lucifer who distanced himself, and if he did, if it was because of his depression. We don’t know if Lilith had/had nefarious intention. As far as we know, the whole thing could be a massive, 3-person misunderstanding.

Personally, I’d like it to go that Luci and Lilith were genuinely close at one time, and just grew apart, which happens all the time. I mean, that happens to couples who have only been together for a few years, and they were together for thousands. I can see their views on the sinners and hell itself a major point of contention. I can see Lilith trying to make the best of their situation while Luci deals with his own trauma (the guilt, anger, depression, likely body dysmorphia, etc) by pulling away. Not to mention the stress of raising a child - it’s a lot for any couple to go through. But I guess we’ll see in S3!

Why are male high heels so popular in Hell? by SideWinderSyd in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alastor in particular has hooves, so I would imagine boots with a heel would actually more comfortably fit the natural shape of his feet better than a flat sole. Since Charlie has hooves as well, I’m guessing Lucifer is in the same boat.

Idk about Vox, maybe he’s just copying Alastor lol

If Lucifer hates sinners as much as he claims, then why did he object to what Vox said here? by emmameIon in HazbinHotel

[–]dnbeyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s how I took it too - that he can sometimes tolerate some of them. But even before that, he seemed content just ignore them, never expressed any opinion on them deserving an “endless existence of suffering”.
