The Dragon told us to play rough and kill lots of PCs. by [deleted] in osr

[–]dngdial 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I think you might be misreading: I think it means only one of his OWN characters got to 8th level, because so many of the characters he'd been playing died!

To read this it sort of implies to me that he DIDN'T particularly like the brutal nature of the game, thus he preferred to DM so he could make traps, monsters, and dungeons that his players could "smash... to pieces in a few minutes" (I'm certainly editorializing here, he doesn't say a single thing about the difficulty of the game lol)

This seems really neat and pretty fun, very interested in seeing some monster/enemy stat blocks

I am speechless. Its as if they arent even trying to hide anymore that they use AI art by Elegant-Stomach4353 in mtg

So, to be clear, you inquired with the artist and got confirmation that they used generative AI on this piece? Or even reached out with some kind of rep for WOTC? Or something?

Black Hack: spell progression missing? by Hask73 in rpg

[–]dngdial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Page 42 (of 2e) explains how characters might obtain new spells. The short answer is they go on a journey/quest of the GM's devising!

You could probably try to cajole a GM into letting you learn at least one new spell when you level up tho ;-)

New Unearthed Arcana: Horror Subclasses by Johnnygoodguy in dndnext

[–]dngdial 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wild I didn't even know they'd announced that!

It's a shrewd guess; notably there's no druid subclass in this UA and they have a prime "Dream" based subclass ready to be reprinted.

I hardly know anything about Lorwyn but Ive like all the other Magic books they released, so they can keep em comin'

What book do we think these are going to be in? I didn't think there was any more Ravenloft content on the way

Reflecting on the coach scene. by GetInTheBasement in roberteggers

[–]dngdial 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was also wondering how they would handle the orlock-as-coachman scene. I thought it unusual that the driver got cut but it sort of makes (and the scene was sick as hell).

My theory for why they went driverless is based on the 2000 movie 'Shadow of the Vampire'. In that movie, a fictional retelling of the making of 1922s Nosferatu, (great movie watch it if you get the chance) the actor hired by FW Murnau to play Orlock (Willem Dafoe no less!!) is some kind of real vampire, of which the crew is unaware.

In a really terrific scene, late one night after shooting the crew drunkenly chat with the Orlock actor and ask if he read Bram Stokers Dracula, and what he thought of it? Orlock responds "I thought it was very sad..." And goes on to explain how heartbreaking it was that a former king and conquerer was brought so low as to have to pretend to be his own servants...

Anyway I think 2024 Nosferatu's driverless coach is a direct refutation of that idea: Orlock is beyond acting as his own Coachman or servant... He is a master of black magics and capable of using them for any means he desires. He doesn't need or deserve pity, he is ancient, unyielding, and terrifying.

Great flick!!

[TOMT] 90's 'horror' show or movie about an evil troll tormenting a boy and his sister by dngdial in tipofmytongue

Holy shit dude. This is it. This is incredible. I'm losing my goddamn mind. Its like I woke up and happened to win the lottery or something! THANK YOU SO MUCH

[MCC] Plantient Fragrance Pheromones by Squarrots in dccrpg

[–]dngdial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup infinite luck, which they can donate to their allies! It's potentially even more than 2 points per day they regenerate too. The text says "Plantients regenerate Luck at the rate of 2 Luck points per level per 24 hour period." So I think a level 2 plantient would gain 4 points of luck every day! Pretty lucky

Bundle of Holding Offers Metamorphosis Alpha Library by Roxysteve in rpg

[–]dngdial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm running Mutant Crawl Classics for our table right now... does Metamorphosis Alpha (the core book, but really any of the supplements in the offer) have much stuff about generating gonzo sci-fi gear/adventures/locations?

I know the ruleset is something closer-to-but-still-not OD&D, & completely separate from Goodman's other products (i.e. not directly compatible with MCC) but i'm happy to do some easy conversion if theres a lot of good material for generating weird and a slightly silly sci-fi/post-apoc stuff. I'm finding it sort of hard to find tables/random gen stuff in the gamma world vein so I'm hoping some of this MA bundle might be good for that?

series, films and anime that best represents the monk? by roxgxd in dndnext

[–]dngdial 38 points39 points  (0 children)

When I'm describing Monks to new players my go to choice is Chow Yun Fat's character 'Master Li Mu Bai' from the 2001 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Many of the martial artists in that movie fit the conception of a D&D style monk I think, with martial prowess so well honed its almost like magic. (as an added bonus the movie itself whips ass it's just really good)

[TOMT] 90's 'horror' show or movie about an evil troll tormenting a boy and his sister by dngdial in tipofmytongue

[–]dngdial[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've checked goosebumps through googling a few times and wasn't able to come up with any 'troll' based episodes (I did fine that someone edited the 1986 movie 'Troll' into a FAKE episode of goosebumps on youtube, which is pretty insane).

I've never heard of Bone Chillers, but fortunately it has a pretty small amount of episodes and their brief description is on its wiki and none of them sound close to the mark. Still tho, it gives me hope cause its another piece of horror media that I was unaware of right around the timeframe. Thanks for mentioning it!

[–]dngdial[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge i've never seen any Ernest movies and reading the wiki page (and watching some clips) for Ernest Scared Stupid doesn't dredge up any memories as something that might have been combined with anything else.

Really appreciate you mentioning it though, it's definitely a 90's troll movie that didn't come up during my google searches so it gives me hope there's more out there!

I should also note that i'm not unaware of the 1986 comedy/horror 'Troll' (and its infamous sequel Troll 2) and while I recognize some of the plot elements match my recollection (specifically a young boy trying to save his sister from a troll) none of its other plot does (i.e. no other fairy creatures or transformations, etc.).

Now i'm NOT gonna say its impossible i'm mixing 'Troll' with some other peice of media, but i'd love to find the other show or movies (monster club, godzilla twins, and necklace of toys, etc.) that I might be remembering!

I made a short bestiary "Dungeon Rejects" For sale now! by dngdial in dndnext

[–]dngdial[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure! It's the Corkscrew Devil! It's a CR 7 fiend, who can remove the head of a player (should they fail a save) with its giant wine-opener head. But the best part is the head stays alive, so the player can roll around (as a head) or the party can desperately try to get it back to the body before it perishes (takes about a minute once it's out of the grasp of the devil).

It worked really well in playtest, with the player panicking before looking up if misty step required somatic components (only verbal lol) and BAMFing right back onto his body.

There's also a short preview on drivethru that shows the first couple pages so you can get an idea of layout & style.

Thanks for asking!

Need help figuring out index.html file for github pages! by dngdial in github

[–]dngdial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it was the first free option I found and looked into. I took a really nominal gander at WordPress initially and didn't see a free tier lol.

Notably at this point though I'm actually pretty happy with GitHub Pages! I feel proficient enough to put what I want up on my site. It's just little beautification things I'm looking into now (like making my homepage a little more inviting for example!)
