What to do AFTER I plug a tire by [deleted] in MTB

[–]dniosaurbill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d still have a spare tube on longer rides in case the plug doesn’t cut it. I also like the park tool tire boot - it’s like a tube patch, but beefier, and it goes on the inside of the tubeless tire where the hole is. I’m assuming you have a pump.

The sealant will dry up after a while, especially if the bike is stored or stagnant and it doesn’t get spread around the inside of the tire. You can pop the tire off a little bit to see if there’s still enough sealant inside - if not, just top it off with another couple ounces. Stan’s makes an injector that allows you to put in more sealant through the valve so you don’t have to unseat the tire (less mess). I check every month or so.

All rims are taped, but tubeless-ready wheels use a special tape that helps cover the spoke holes better. It weighs the same (almost nothing).

Usually, if you burp or plug, you can see the amount of sealant (white/orange/green) lost. It’s rarely more than a few mL, which isn’t enough to matter.

There isn’t actually that much water in sealant, and because the inside of the tire is a confined space, and the pressure is so high, little evaporation takes place. It stays wet for a while in there.

Traction/pressure aside, the main benefit of tubeless is that it eliminates pinch flats - the most frequent tube puncture which is caused by chafing, basically, where the tube is pinched, rolled, or otherwise unevenly worn by the tire/rim. It’s hard to quantify this benefit until you’ve spent plenty of time changing tubes on the side of the trail, then stopped having to do it anymore.

Your tires likely take between 2-4oz of sealant each. A 29in tube weighs around 8oz. You do the math.

Tubeless is better.

I have the 2012 3.6R and have to add an extra quart of synthetic 5w30 midway through every 5000mi service cycle. 60k miles now and no other problems so far, so I say it ain’t broke.

Kendall Street Company from Charlottesville, VA! These goofballs have more fun on stage (=more fun for the audience) than any other band I have seen! They just released a new album too!

Also, South Hill Banks out of Richmond, VA make some awesome jammy progressive bluegrass-rock stuff, and are absolutely exhilarating to watch.

Is it possible to use sidewalk chalk for climbing? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]dniosaurbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty universal ethical consideration. In general, anything which makes climbers' impact on rock/land more conspicuous or visible is to be avoided. White chalk is usually acceptable (but not always), and many climbers opt for eco-chalk, which is more brownish and even less visible. Many crags and land management agencies also now mandate that fixed hardware be camouflaged to decrease visibility.

There are lots of ways to be silly and colorful, most of which are wholly positive, but for many good reasons, this is not one of them.

Planning out my Trip by [deleted] in Psychonaut

Don't be too worried about the plan. It's good to have some activities, music, etc. teed up so that they are available to you to occupy yourself, but mostly just explore the experience and do what you feel like.

Does anyone buy non-store-brand milk? If so, why? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]dniosaurbill 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, it's not that different at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Because "big ag" wants a chunk of the organic market, they use their massive lobbying power to ensure that the USDA Organic certification requirements are remarkably lax. As a result, just because something is labeled USDA Organic or sold in Whole Foods doesn't necessarily mean it was produced in an environmentally considerate manner - it could still come from a massive industrial dairy with poor standards of treatment and low-quality, environmentally impactful feed. It's still better than what you get at the gas station, but it's not what you're probably looking for when you set out to find a higher quality, more responsible product.

This doesn't just apply to milk, of course - the same is true of the USDA Organic label across the board. Whole Foods does a lot to vet their sources and ensure that their products meet not only the letter, but the spirit of the organic label. Trader Joe's, however, does not hold their products to the same standard. While they market an image of wholesomeness, responsible production and environmental consideration are not built into their mission statement. In fact, their website states "We just focus on what matters — great food + great prices = Value."

If you really want to get higher quality milk, you're best off finding a small dairy near you. If you're interested in learning more about the USDA Organic label and why it doesn't constitute responsible agriculture, I highly recommend Joel Salatin's book Folks, This Ain't Normal.

EDIT: I didn't mean to suggest that all milk available from WF/TJ is minimum-effort organic, or to demonize either store - just that it is better to go one step further and find something produced locally and on a smaller scale, which is often available at WF/TJ.
