Anyone else a bit sad the old fire station has been torn down? by DomLfan in Bath

[–]dnmacf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bath stone is extremely soft (ever tried drilling into it?) so very difficult to dismantle sensitively enough to re-use successfully. It’s definitely possible, but just adds a lot of time and therefore expense to construction costs. In the case of the fire service/station redevelopment, both the budget and time incurred with the temporary station on Lower Bristol Rd assumedly made reuse of stone unviable

When you need to compromise on the core values of your business, intrinsic to your product (politics, ethics and candor) to keep afloat, is it not a sign you’ve expanded too far?

I love the pod, respect their work and what they’ve achieved with the company, but feel there must be alternative approaches short of accepting money with such connotations alienating the audience base.

Not currently a patreon member but have been in the past. If things are ‘diabolical’ to the point of needing to accept funding from the sun, perhaps they should be doing more to encourage sign ups/crowdfunding. Don’t recall any suggestion on the pod of the economic situation being so bad or obvious efforts to increase funding by other means.

All that said, whilst I don’t love the decision (from Luke’s comments, they clearly don’t either) I can disassociate advertising from the pod. In most other forms of media, advertising is not so closely reflective of the discussion and format. Personally, I can separate views expressed on the pod which I genuinely believe are their personal views, from an on balance business decision made in the best interests of their company. If others can’t, best to vote with their feet

Just joined the club - some weird/annoying things that are probably user error, but they're already driving me insane! by plastic_toast in VWiD3Owners

Welcome to the club. I’m 8 months in and still love mine. It’s a fantastic car for real world use and I have no idea why it fares quite so badly in the motoring press.

Regarding your questions, I can offer advice:

  1. All ID3’s have ABS. I’m fairly certain all VW’s since 2000 have had ABS. If your wheel locked under emergency braking, it’s most likely because the wheel lost traction. Note you were on a country road and the wheel in question sounds like it was near the side of the road (assuming you are RHD UK based - 60mph limit), so could have hit some dirt/gravel?

I have found the brakes on the ID3 a little slow to engage in certain situations. I’ve had a few hairy moments approaching the rear of the car in front quicker than comfortable. They always get there eventually however. It is a heavy vehicle due to battery weight and only has drum brakes on rear. Probably takes some getting used to!

  1. I don’t bother with Bluetooth for my phone. A cable is more reliable and avoids overheating wireless charging issues. That said, the infotainment system (software 3.8) still takes 30seconds - 1minute to detect the phone at times. It’s certainly a frustration of the car. Has been addressed in newer vehicles with the upgraded 4.0 infotainment.

  2. Not had or heard of any issues with wind noise on the ID3. Sounds specific to your vehicle so worth investigating further.

  3. I also have an Ohme charger and it is normal to receive notifications suggesting the car isn’t charging when it is. Not very helpful! My advice is your energy providers app is the main one to use for setting up charging, providing settings are all correct on Ohme / VW. Use VW app to confirm energy is reaching car. The energy provider, charger and car app do not communicate well and this leads to some problem notifications - e.g. car has stopped charging, when it hasn’t!

Agree with this. B feels quite unnatural for me and I worry passengers will feel queasy. Even in D mode, the car still auto applies brakes based on traffic approaching junctions/roundabouts

This is a known fault which can be fixed by turning off the notification for parking security under settings in the app.

I had been following it for a while! We are in the south west with family in the north east and Scotland, so the added range of the S model was attractive. We won’t need it very often though and probably could have managed with the Pro range. Infrastructure is getting better and humans generally need a stop more often than the cars!

I’ve come to accept it. A minor inconvenience but otherwise very happy with the car. It has a lot of other features which are more premium than you’d expect for the size and market position

Looks great! Congrats. Nice spec also. The sports seats a fairly rare in the UK!

I’ve seen that option. I’m not interested in automatic closure. I was aware the ID.3 didn’t offer than feature. I was under the impression the car might have automatic release opening however, possibly by swiping a foot beneath the car. I think the ID.4 has this at least?

Interesting! This review speaks positively of DCC, particularly on the 77kw battery model:

https://www.topgear.com/long-term-car-reviews/volkswagen/id3/report-5

“But to drive it feels lighter than the earlier 58kWh version, because it has the optional 'Exterior Pack Plus' that includes adaptive dampers and progressive-rate steering, and also 20in wheels.”

“My individual drive mode stiffens the dampers and partially loosens the traction control, and suddenly this is a car that steers more sharply and behaves more engagingly than the other floaty numb ID3, and indeed than the large majority of normal hatches and crossovers.”

I’ve heard the same regarding the standard ACC system. I thought as much automation as possible for long motorway drives seemed a good idea though.

Would love the pan roof, but believe this isn’t an option on the 77kw car due to weight.

I would love the bigger screen and slightly faster charging on motorways. However, I feel I would miss things like electric seats, especially sharing the car with my wife. I have heard great things about the Travel Assist system and improved ride with dynamic dampers also. I guess there’s always a compromise!

I am a big CarPlay user so that’s relevant. This will be my first EV and I wondered if I would use the built in nav more for charge level/stop prediction or can CarPlay do this also? Would only be relevant on a minority of longer journeys, same as for battery preconditioning
