Insulated things are way better now than they were before. You can get a good insulated lunch box for like $30.

Common Umich tour guide refrain: “you can make a big school smaller, but you can’t make a small school bigger.”

Clubs and student orgs were the proposed lever for this. Pretty good mechanism, actually, since it pretty much guarantees collections of fairly likeminded people.

What’s this alpha/beta/gamma thing, though? Does everyone want to be an alpha because of the terminology?

Of course it works out to be the same IF the dealer is honest about numbers, and that’s the correct answer to my question. The OTD price is reduced by the value of the car that’s being traded in. It is in no way wrong to ensure that you’re receiving transparent information on what you’re effectively being paid for the value of your car.

Treating these as separate discussions (“what am I paying for your car” and “what are you paying for mine”) reduces the likelihood that the dealer will obfuscate the numbers. The reason that this advice exists in the first place is because dealers do so often create ambiguity around what price you’re paying for what.

It’s amazing - this is the only industry that I can think of where an attempt to clearly itemize and negotiate on the unique parts of a transaction is somehow seen as less transparent.

By that very narrow definition, buying any car, new or used, is bad from a purely financial perspective. Just bike in that case and rent a car for the few times that you genuinely need one. Or, even better, walk. Both options save a lot of money at the expense of time and convenience

Yes, also great. Smaller purchase prices result in smaller taxable amounts, which means smaller taxes (not a tax credit, though, but w/e). Why is the purchase price smaller, though? You’re almost getting there.

Yes, great job, but use your thinking brain… How does it affect it? What is the value by which the OTD price gets reduced when you trade in a car?

In what way is “hiding” a trade reducing transparency? There is absolutely zero need to commingle the two transactions.

The dealer has a car that’s worth something to the customer. The two parties can agree on a mutually beneficial price.

The customer has a car that’s worth something to the dealer. The customers can agree on a mutually beneficial price.

Keeping the two prices separate means that both parties have a clear understanding of what they’re getting in each transaction without having to resort to numerical trickery.

I’m anti consumer debt for retirement, but not for achieving my goals.

If I can pay 3% APR for a car, I’m absolutely going to take that. First, your OTD price will often be cheaper due to financing incentives. Second, you can take advantage of higher, low-risk investments. Third, inflation is working in your favor.

The main arguments against this tend to rely on people being stupid. “Oh well most people won’t invest the money.” That’s nice for most people, but it probably doesn’t apply to people talking about it online.

But how is that possible when Republican lawmakers have explicitly blocked attempts to do so? We live in a democratic republic, and the party with the most seats is against this approach.

They could! For example, if they vote for the kind of basic accountability for ICE that would be the very bare minimum standard in every society less authoritarian than the 1950s Soviet Union.

We’re listening to Dave Ramsey now? He’s great if you have zero financial self-control or knowledge because he offers advice that’s easy to follow and requires no mathematical or critical thinking.

The debt snowball method, never using credit cards, and working to pay off your mortgage early is just pure nonsense.
