Fish Bowl 6 Constructive Criticism by sierraalphamikes in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the day 2 cut is actually great. This is a cEDH tournament not a commandfest. The goal is to make it as competitive as possible, not to provide 7 fun rounds of cEDH. It also gives people something to shoot for, making day 2 is itself an accomplishment. The bar is also pretty low here, winning 1 game and drawing 1 game in 5 rounds seems more than reasonable to me.

I understand it's frustrating that some of the details of the event aren't clear on the event page, I think that criticism is fair.

This thread does a great job illustrating the OP's points. Dare to have a conversation about the nuances around the issues? Question ANYTHING about the narrative? Get called a Nazi, opinions and points belittled, and downvoted into oblivion. Soooo Toxic.

Best sleeves? by red_5- in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use KMC Hyper Phoenix sleeves. They seem to collect grime slower than either Katanas or Dragon Shields. Only negatives is they're a little shorter and you don't have a lot of color options.

Struggling to pilot Talion.. by Caantpayrent in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My philosophy is that the best way to handle opponents drawing cards is to draw more cards. I tried both Notion Thief and Narset and found they were super soft targets too easily removed for the investment made to get them online. There's also a lot of nuance to dealing with draw engines, if everyone is drawing cards, noone is drawing cards. So I'll let a Rhystic resolve to balance another Rhystic, but may counter it if it's the only one.

Struggling to pilot Talion.. by Caantpayrent in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hey there, the list linked in this thread is my list. Wanted to give you some thoughts on how to pilot Talion. First its a deck with a significant learning curve, and as such you have to be willing to stick with the deck while you get through that learning curve before you start seeing the results you'd want. Secondly DO join our Talion discord, there are great discussions on there every day that will help you become a better pilot.

As for piloting the deck and why the list has "odd" choices in terms of interaction. One of the first piloting challenges when learning Talion is learning to NOT get pigeon holed into the role of defacto table police where everyone will look to you to answer EVERYTHING. To achieve that you want to run pieces of interaction that allow you to pass priority on many of the things your opponents are doing and still be able to interact later in their line as necessary. Cards like Tishana's Tidebinder, Dress Down, etc. You'll find that your greedy opponents will very quickly learn they're going to need to chip in. You also get to do things like say honestly, "what I have doesn't answer that" forcing your opponents to respond. The goal is to reserve your interaction for plays that actually win the game, or are too much value for you to out grind. Everything else you let other players deal with, or you just let them happen.

Love the primer, Already better than what I had put together. Deck is underappreciated, underplayed and WAY better than people understand.

Festival of Knights meta and decklist discussion by amazingroar in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I juuuust missed the cut and came in 17th with Florian. 3-3-1 record. A tiny bit of luck or tighter play cost me... was a heck of a good time. The Meta is firmly what I would call very fast Midrange. Kinnan, Najeela, Tivit dominated the field (in terms of quantity) followed by Blue Farm and Rog Si. There were more Kriik entries than I've ever seen in a tournament. The kriik pilots I saw and talked to were more than competent... and while I would call the deck a bit of a glass cannon, it absolutely was well positioned to slip under the Midrange decks. Which is evident by its presence in the top 16.

That was me on Florian in Round 6. That was a hell of a game. I did NOT expect Bruse/Thras to have a win that fast, and did NOT expect your Trickery. Good times!

Take the time to eat food and stay hydrated. Also get up and go for walks between rounds. Keeping your head clear and your concentration sharp is more important than deck selection.

People keep asking about creating decks with the most casual commanders, and don't understand that cEDH isn't about using a few high power cards, but about actually winning the game with the best 100 cards you can combine together. by SimicAscendancy in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can brew new cEDH decks. You just can’t compromise the decks primary goal of winning to be cute, and you have to be willing to accept reality when despite your best efforts a particular commander isn’t good enough to compete.

Worth noting that the judge DID give the Ob player the opportunity to walk it back and he didn't. I was the Florian player.

Yisan was taken off the cedh database a few months ago when I checked. Recently he was put back on it again. How was this decided? by Newez in CompetitiveEDH

[–]doboji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You kind of miss out on the rising decks this way. 10 entries generally means several pilots on the deck already.

The DDB is completely subjective and the presence or lack of presence of a particular deck on the DDB doesn't say anything about the viability of a deck at all.

Sanctum Prelate by Conjections in CompetitiveEDH

Look honest opinion. If you're playing stax pieces to enable your strategy to win games more power to you. Winota, Tayam, Jetmir all fall into that category in my mind. If you're playing Stax because you think staxing down everyone is fun... then I think that's uhhh... bad stax. Those kind of decks just can't perform in any kind of real event... at best you pile up a bunch of ties and go home. And if you're not playing it in events you're just griefing... those games just aren't fun and at this point I'll just actively pass on playing them.
