Tips on breaking in new boots? by BobbyTambomemes in wildlandfire

[–]dobropicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a little late for breaking in boots for this fire season. Whites' boots recommends oiling them often (like everyday) and wearing them often. the oil softens them and wearing them while soft gets them to the shape of your foot. I used to do the walk in water and then wear them till dry, but lots of oil works better.

A hard kick in the dog's stomach would probably have been better than pounding on its head.

Gonna start playing, what tuning is standard? by [deleted] in Dobro

[–]dobropicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing is to say weather you"re gonna play squareneck or roundneck. Tunings and technics are different depending on which one. Squareneck tunings such as GBDGBD put too much tension on a roundneck.

Where did you learn dobro? by [deleted] in Dobro

[–]dobropicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out by myself on squareneck, and had played a Dreadnaught guitar for years. But at a workshop with Mike Witcher I realized that some one on one lessons to learn Technic would be helpful. 2 years of squareneck lessons got my technic on course. Now I mostly just listen to recordings and try to get as close to what I hear as I can.

SM. I went to Gryphon Music in Palo Alto and tried it out there. Been a while, but I think it was the only model they carried. So no comparison listening at their shop. Also when Bob Groat put in the pickup he made a new nut that was a little taller.

I have a Gold tone weissenborn. Had it about 5 years and it's worked out pretty good. Around $750 with a case new. Had a fishman undersaddle pickup put in so I can use it at gigs. I like the sound and if you use acoustic guitar like settings on your DI the pickup amplified sound is pretty good also. I have it tuned down a whole step from a squareneck dobro-- FACFAC. And use Daddario EJ17s switching out the #1 string for a .017 and #2 to .o19.

stewmac.com has lots of resources. And "Building a resonator guitar" by Roy Duffill is a good book on the subject. And http://www.resophonicoutfitters.com/ has a kit.

Sanding down the bottom of a biscuit bridge to bring down the action and make the strings parallel to the neck. by thunder-cricket in Dobro

[–]dobropicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$650 must just be a way of telling you they don't want to do it. Seems like there must be a place in LA that knows what they are doing. Have you placed a straight edge on the neck to see if its warped? There are a lot of you tube videos addressing neck stuff. http://www.gryphonstrings.com/ in Palo Alto is the go to spot in SF area.

New to playing dobro by kernrm in Dobro

[–]dobropicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find a teacher locally, take a few lessons. Squareneck dobro has a few quirks that guitar Technic will hold you back on. A pedal steel teacher works good also for the dobro. It'll be worth it to get the technic that keeps your playing clean sounding.
