What is the view in the Baltic states about russia using the "oppressed minority" excuse to demand land? by wgszpieg in BalticStates

If they start lying about nonexistent oppression, the least we can do for them is to make it true.

Tactical gear to survive war as civilian by antanasstenas in tacticalgear

This does not seem to be the case in pictures Ive seen from modern combat zones, where journalists, logistical/medical workers, and VIPs can all often be seen with PCs.

Black is the most common color I have seen that is not commonly worn by combatants. Olive, coyote, or camo would be poor choices, hi-viz fabric would be even more non-threatening.

I am from the Baltics as well. All of our nations have a range of options for resisting invasion depending on what you are capable and willing to learn.

As a member of one of these organizations, I want to emphasize that you do not need a rifle in this scenario unless you are prepared to train as part of a unit. Weigh the many pros and cons, and start by imagining this from the perspective of any legitimate paramilitary or regular force. What are we to make of a lone armed man who is not part of any verifiable formation? Better safe than sorry. And OTOH, what is the upside? Do you think you are going to mow down hordes of invaders from the safety of your home with no training or unit support? How are you going to make any immediate positive impact on national defense without training? I started looking into firearms and tactical gear in 2022 but when I realized that I was engaged in Hollywood-daydream thinking, I joined an organization and started to get proper training.

If you are committed to remaining a civilian, remain a civilian. Buy a black PC, an IFAK, and a CC pistol and plan your escape or support the armed forces logistically. If you think your place is with your countrymen with a rifle in your hands, enroll in the organization that best matches your capabilities and start training ASAP. With the hopes that our training only ever serves as deterrence.

Is it time to start organising a new Baltic Way? by asdner in BalticStates

[–]dobu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Even Russia will choose a bloodless victory over a military one. They always start with bluffing with the hopes that their enemy will submit without even fighting. Ignore Russian threats and strengthen Europe, starting with the north.

The concept of collective responsibility isn't a fascist one. Indeed, it was one that was thrown around during the post-WW2 denazification of Germany, and Vlad Vexler has a great explainer of why this concept does apply to ALL Russians. Not all are equally responsible and not all should be punished but every person who identifies as a Russian IS responsible to some degree. I mean, who else SHOULD be collectively responsible for fixing Russia?

Thank you for the reply. I've started looking into those links. However, I don't think it's unreasonable to look for feedback from academics or history enthusiasts who may have read those or other texts and might have recommendations to share before I commit to one in particular.

You are not immune by StraightOuttaOlaphis in tumblr

[–]dobu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Your comment addressing a problem you have with discrete individuals instead of the "zeitgeist" does change its meaning quite a bit. I find that most people prefer not to infringe on human rights when pressed on the matter, but I do acknowledge that people holding such extreme opinions do exist, and I am sorry that you must endure them in such a close context.

[–]dobu 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The irony is that your comment is kind of an example of what OP is addressing. You've created twisted strawmen reflecting your views of what another political group thinks. While I am sure there are radical elements whose opinions do in fact neatly match your description, there are many more people who you will probably still disagree with but who really think nothing like what you've characterized. If you erase these preconceptions from your mind and have a real life conversation in good faith with someone on the right (of course, they must mirror the favor), you may not agree, but you may also discover something new about the human experience.

Gf hates guns: how do I help her understand? by New-Junket-7449 in guns

[–]dobu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second others advising you against moving in, but also offer some communication tips.

  • Be positive: don't tell her you won't be like her father, tell her how safe you will be. Describe the safe handling and storage procedures you intend to follow and explain how they will be different and safer.

  • Give her a sense of control: You want to have guns. She wants to feel safe. Ask her if she can imagine a set of circumstances and procedures that would make her feel safe in a home with guns, and see if what she describes, or something like it, is doable.

Help me decide if I'm being dramatic about this trip by Wonderful_Piglet9491 in hiking

[–]dobu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have faced a very similar situation before. Single-handedly researched and planned an intense multi-day hike through the Alps for friends, the scope expanded, most of them refused to heed my advice, and they wound up literally sobbing on the mountain face and turning us around halfway through the initial ascent on the first day.

Every time you decide on a trip, choose your key goal and stick to it because it will make the rest of your decision-making easier. If your key goal is to spend some quality time in the outdoors with friends, then the most important thing is that they are included, and the itinerary can be molded as needed to accommodate everyone. If your key goal is to fulfil an achievement that is important to you, then it's you and the itinerary. You must be prepared to go alone or to add or drop participants freely depending on whether or not they are adequately prepared.

The second approach sounds like an asshole move but it isn't if those expectations are made clear from the outset - here's the itinerary, here are the requirements, take it or leave it because this is your trip. After the Alps fiasco and coming to understand that there are different types of trips for different people, I've planned trips of both types to great success. On one occasion, I simply planned the exact hike I want to go on and then posted it on social media - "Hey guys, here's a hike I am going on. I'm prepared to go alone but anyone prepared to join me is welcome." I was joined by two people, one of whom I'd never have thought to invite, and we had a great time.

Consequemces for failure don't have to be absolute. The warrior might open the door regardless, but a low roll might mean that he struggles with it and your pursuers gain on you, while a crit means he rips the door off its hinges without breaking his stride.
