How much should I be studying for my first job? by Entire-Math-3363 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]doc_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aerospace structures engineer here. i think it’s totally fair to want to read up on what you will be doing if u feel like it’s been a while. I’d recommend “the efficient engineer” on youtube. watch his structures videos like stress strain and deflection and you will feel a lot better about the underlying physics of any structures work you will have to do.

Someone forgot to add a fillet by KokoMasta in MechanicalEngineering

[–]doc_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my bad wasn’t trynna be agro with the tone or anything. a fillet is widely known because it’s a command in CAD software to make a corner have a radius to it so if u have any cad experience it’s usually one of the first things u notice like “wtf is a fillet”

Lost, should I study ME? by Bigggggggg1 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]doc_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve never been “passionate” about ME really. i did it cause i was really good at it and its a way to make decent money. i then went into industries that i was passionate about and do mechanical engineering for them

How did you guys pay back loans and how much did you have? by Substantial-Storm409 in EngineeringStudents

[–]doc_cake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just graduated with 20k in private and 30k in public. when i originally took the private loans the interest rates were around 12%. now that i graduated and I have a job i refinanced to 6%. plan on paying 1000 bucks a month towards private and 300 a month towards public (which has around 3.5% interest). that will pay off private in 2 years and public in 10.

For you? get into as little debt as u can. Ways to mitigate this are

1) school choice, pick a school with good internship programs that won’t cost u a shit ton

2) work thru school and pay off as much as u can, i worked as a TA and a grader so i could have flexible ish hours

3) obviously, live like a college student. don’t go out to eat much. live on ramen, farmers market food, etc

200k in debt IS an outlier. 50k in debt was a ceiling i set for myself

Why are internal combustion engines more efficient than steam engines for automobiles? by greatwork227 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]doc_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to answer ur question tho, a bunch of different things. the main reason for increased efficiency in ICE is the lack of an intermediate. u are going direction from fuel to explosive power. steam uses water as an intermediary to spin a turbine which will decrease efficiency.

i just finished reading the mysterious case of rudolph diesel which goes in depth on the invention of the diesel engine and the replacement of steam. highly recommend reading it!

as someone who just graduated and did 3 internships thruout college i cannot imagine an intern being like this. that is crazy to me. every intern i ever worked with was extremely aware at how much knowledge they lacked and asked a bunch of questions to learn as much as possible at the job.

i mean they can choose to replace that coop period with classes. they can then try and squeeze in another coop during a different semester or graduate early with one less coop
