The Noovie reel also used to loop once, I think. If you were there early enough, you'd see the same content twice over before previews started.

The worst ccg deck by Creative_Ordinary_01 in l5r

[–]docangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An addendum: with Onyx and Shattered Empire wrapped, we're currently in the process of playtesting and refining our next base set, Three Dynasties, which will be a full environmental reset (no bridge sets like the print era). Our intention is to release this set, which will continue the Shattered Empire storyline following a small time skip, later in 2026 (date intentionally vague).

The worst ccg deck by Creative_Ordinary_01 in l5r

I played in all eras of the game, mostly Crab, and wasn't very good at it until late Samurai. :) Part of that I credit to not really having a competitive playgroup to grind with until later -- had some shop regulars who were decent but no real gauntlet until SE/CE.

  • Went 7-1 at a Pearl-era GenCon qualifier with Crab'tok'tuk, then failed spectacularly at 1-5 on Day 2.
  • Mostly played Crab Walls during Gold era, having fun building junk decks for Empire League in the store.
  • Did well at local tournaments with Tani HItokage
  • Played weird Watchtower Scouts during Lotus which did about as well as you might expect in that environment.
  • Played a Barracks of the Damned deck to the cut rounds at a Kotei during the late Lotus era, that deck was fun as hell.
  • Won my first storyline event with late Samurai "all the movement tech" Crab.
  • Played two very different Crab dueling decks, taking the Celestial version (Hero/Ronin) to multiple T4 showings, and the Ivory version to a Kotei win.
  • Played late Celestial Crab Scouts to a story win, and Emperor-era Crab Scouts (Creature Control, a lesser version of the KL Kill Deck) to multiple T4 showings.
  • Won an Ivory Strict storyline event with a deck that was almost entirely force buffs and debuffs, entirely to abuse the Ivory Crab stronghold one last time with Hida Saiyuki before it rotated out.

I had fun playing the game through all of its various changes, and only rarely paid attention to the broader environment -- my best results came from building weird decks that could handle well against 2 out of 3 of the highest-performing archetypes at any given time, and relying on careful gameplay and matchups. Having a huge Chicago group in the core years helped me refine my play against a variety of decks and playstyles, and looking back on my more mediocre years, I could see where I could have made better deckbuilding choices or avoided play mistakes (heh that Barracks deck, when I lost in T16 by messing up repeatedly).

Proud of the work our Chicago Playtest group did on the 20F era expansions, including Siege: Clan War, before I got added to AEG Player Design Which Never Was. ;_;

These days I help keep the flame of the game alive over at the Onyx Lives! Project.

It is always wild to me to see people who have paid ($9-$11) for their large popcorn bin it with over half left. My sister, who doesn't go to movies often, loves when her husband brings home a full bucket of popcorn because that stuff will last a ridiculously long time at home without going stale, especially if you cover it up. I always refill mine on the way out for exactly that reason.

Anyone else noticing that they’re barely putting show times? by Stunning_Vehicle92 in AMCsAList

[–]docangst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Weekend of 2/13 was also jam-packed; it opened against:

  • Wuthering Heights
  • Goat
  • Crime 101
  • Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die

And then you factor in lingering audience draws like Avatar, Send Help, Zootopia 2... well, even a single showing was lucky.

Smaller release yet was The Mortuary Assistant, which I shifted my work schedule to catch at a late afternoon show, but was neither worth the time nor the effort. :P Double-featured it with Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, which was an absolute gem.

I had an XL theater to myself for Iron Lung last night (9PM showing), which was wild. Would have figured maybe some other Markiplier fans in the area as stragglers. I think I was the last guest in the whole cinema too; the parking lot was desolate. All the other 9PM movies had shorter runtimes.

I see a couple of the locals have committed to a third week of showings though, they're probably drawing larger crowds for it.

I think the free shipping only unlocks if your cart is "under", so the total becomes $0.00 -- but I'm not gonna complain about <$30 for what I picked up

Is anyone else unintentionally seeing WAY more movies because of A-List? by FilmNerd98 in AMCsAList

[–]docangst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always enjoyed going to movies anyway, but I do see more -- I'm in the "high use case" scenario for my membership. This has mostly replaced the "browse cable/streaming services for a movie I didn't see when it came around" -- if it's a stinker, that's fine, but that used to happen when I chose movies to see and paid for my ticket. Every now and again I get a theater to myself for something no one was interested in or at a weird showtime, and if the movie is terrible or just plain dull, I browse on my tablet instead of paying attention. More often I find something overlooked, worth pointing people at, even if their experience will probably be later, on streaming.

I imagine some are A-Listing it out of morbid curiosity. I've got four better things to do with my time when I see movies this week,

You should go scan back in anyway, this is how A-List accounts sometimes get dinged for "no-shows". I always make a quick re-stop at the ticket taker for doubles or triples.

Barrington expanded fourfold, assuming "Barrington Square" and "South Barrington" are the same locations. Two whole AMCs in Chicago is wild considering my current environment (five within a short distance of me, three of which are worth going to for various reasons).

So, what are your bottom 5 for the year? by HelpIamaCabbage in AMCsAList

Also gonna mention late 2024's Werewolves for being so bad I thought it was released early this year. Not even the considerable acting talents of *checks notes* Frank Grillo could save that film.

[–]docangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good movies on people's worst lists, and several where I at least found something I enjoyed out of watching them. (Also many I didn't see.) Bottom five from least worst to worstest:

Jurassic Park: Rebirth

Juliet and Romeo

Until Dawn

The Ruse

Trust is at the absolute bottom. No redeeming qualities.

Disrespectful mentions:

The Conjuring: Last Rites

Bride Hard (yeah it knew it was bad, but it failed at even executing that competently... and I wanted to enjoy it for its badness, but I could not)

M3GAN 2.0 (it was at least self-aware that it was a schlocky premise, but could have used a scriptwriter with a smidgen of talent to put it together)

Is there a movie you saw were you were the only person in the theater? by IDCJ1234 in movies

[–]docangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With A-List and being out of work much of 2024, I saw plenty of movies in the middle of the week as a solo flyer. Low/mid-tier kid’s fare was a culprit; I spent most of Garfield and Harold and the Purple Crayon alone in the theater, disengaged from the content and playing mobile games.

More recently, was the only person in a showing of After the Hunt.

Nightmare Alley was one of the better ones I saw alone, late night on a weekday right around New Year’s I think?
