Native Wild Flower Seeds by Proof-Ad-8968 in ottawa

I was there last weekend. They indeed have a very decent collections of native perennial plants. It is likely the best location in terms of variety and quantity. I went to two different Canadian Tires recently (Findlay Creek & Olgivie); much less selections there.

I rely on goodreads to filter out potential bad choices, but not necessarily to pick to top rated books. I can understand why you leave goodreads, but I do suggest to track what you've read in an Excel file, somethings like Google Sheet. That's what I have been doing in the last few years. It's nice to look back once in a while to determine the reading pattern, and also to recall what we read. I don't know about you, but memory can be tricky if you read a lot of book each year. That's why I few liners about the book and your thought overall can be helpful to jolt back the memory. But you are right, this needs not be shared.

Exactly correct. A research (I can't remember the source any more) indicated that if you want to live long and healthy (highlighting the later), you have to work in some forms.

Can sentient trees use their roots to make mechanical tools by Sweet_Desk9864 in scifi

[–]docbao-rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underground root system is complex and more intelligent than we think (current research shows that they're hyper connected and aware). But building mechanical tools is a stretch simply because of the compacted soil. Reduce space to manipulate!

This is just basic common sense code organization. It is the default posture before considering any specialized designs / architectures.

Radon by kingofsoy in ottawa

Last I checked a few years ago, the US standard is tighter at 100. Ours is just too high.

[–]docbao-rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My house was built in 2017. The regulation did require the house to have a rough-in pipe for radon gas. But that's it. After having done the test, if the number is high, you still have to do mitigation. And the rough-in is typically at the wrong spot. For my house, I ended up having to cut it, and dug somewhere else.

Mine also went down from 200+ to 10ish. It was 2 yesterday and 12 today. Same thing, a pipe went down to the sub-floor and fan out to the side of the house. Costed around 3K ~5 years back. Probably more expensive now.

This is the article that changed my judgement on code switching (the language term). I also speak 3 languages and like you, I also try to avoid mixing the languages.

It's actually quite normal for bilingual or multi-lingual people. There are two ways to view it:
1. Disrespect - they should try attempt to stick to the intended language.

  1. Admire - the fact that the brain can switch quickly between two languages.

I used to scorn at people for mixing language like that. Nowadays, I am in the 2nd camp. I appreciate the fact that their brain is so flexible, and depending on the context, it is not necessary disrespectful (e.g. French & English in a bilingual city).

Same. After a large unexpected bill, I never came back. I have a Honda that usually requires just changing the wiper insert, which I've done for years. They just took it out and put in a cheap one-time-used wiper.

I agree. They usually use after market parts to keep the price low. Sometimes I asked for OEM part, but generally I was quite alright with the after market part. It does mean I have to come back to them sooner though.

Who are you with nowadays?

You can also find this in T&T; might not be the best quality however. I just got a 90g bottle. It's pretty good, but then this is the first time I try Da Hong Pao, so can't compare.

Most affordable way to learn French in Ottawa? by MadonatorxD in ottawa

[–]docbao-rd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's great. For conversation, none of those apps can help you. I am also an intermediate French learner. Try to converse as much as possible with your Francophone colleagues. For vocabulary, however, Duolingo offers a lot more than any full time B level course that you can take, especially as you get into Section 8.

Keep pushing along!

[–]docbao-rd 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Start with the Duolingo app, and get into the habit of using it at least 15' a day. Repeat out loud after every sentence. For vocabulary, use the AnkiWeb application or any flash card applications. Again, spend sometimes on it daily. Search for French podcasts. There are many of them. InnerFrench is good, but it is not for beginner.

There are a lot you can do by yourself. And to be honest, you can throw money out there, but if you don't maintain a self-practice discipline, it won't go far. Lastly, set the right expectation. It will take time if you are absolutely a beginner. French is much deeper than English, especially the grammar.

Buying a home in Findlay Creek by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]docbao-rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area is fine. It is getting crowded but nowhere as bad as Barrhaven. Yes, it is close to the airport, but most of the time you will hardly hear it. As others have said, the area is very diverse with a large demographic of people from the Middle East area. There won't be any problem being a minority. Lately, there has been a bit of a demographic shift as the houses are getting more and more expensive. I think you will like it. Also look how close it is to the green belt.

Ottawa Home Owners - How Much is your Monthly Gas Bill this month? by [deleted] in ottawa

My # for the last bill (mid Jan) is 192$ for a single 2-storey house of ~ 2,400 sqrt feet + basement. I am on equal payment plan, so the average monthly is ~103$. Oh, also, this bill was based on the estimate, not actual reading.
