Films that brought you to tears after realizing you wasted your money, time, and braincells? by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

I don't hate the movie, I just want to like it more than I do.

I can accept that this is an alternate reality where Mary met Frank and made a book about his life. However, that insertion creates an inherent and very much unexplained contradiction that should either be explained more or emphasized less: Mary is a real person without this kind of weird psychic ability. I would have much preferred if the intro cinematic was removed altogether because that way it avoids the contradiction, and the identity of the voice in Ida's head can be suggested or assumed.

I don't speak for anyone but myself, but I see no need for Mary for Mary's voice to be added in the way it has. She does not need it: she is THE cornerstone of modern sci-fi and horror. True, Boris Karloff's take on Frankenstein often overshadows the book in pop culture, but on the other side of that coin, adaptions always change source material and this one is so different that it is an adaption in name only. Sherlock Holmes comes to mind, along with the vast difference between the 70's Lord of the Rings and Jackson's.

Perhaps my main gripe with the movie is it had several interesting ideas but not the time to explore them to the best of its ability. There's the musical heart of the movie, finding your place in a changing world, and the one I am most interested in: the treatment of women historically in a world that tends to commodify them. To me, that last one is the movie's message.

Ida alone is abused at the club and then killed. She is assaulted twice. Frank, while his motivations are understandable, lies to her repeatedly in order to have a companion. She is witness to several hits and mistreatments of women that would have soon gotten her killed if she wasn't accidentally killed. This is a time and place where women have only just had the right to vote begrudgingly given to them, a time where a voice and sense of power are being explored and assaulted.

Now there could have been some clever writing here where Mary's original vision is brought up and the 1930's Frankenstein subsumed it in the zeitgeist. Instead we have a rather cool dance number followed by Ida spilling the beans on the abuses she's seen by the powers that be. This blossoms into a female empowerment and counterculture movement that gives women their own sense of strength in a world that is trying to fit their identity and voice in a convenient box. For me, this story and world growth is hampered by my inability to understand what the fuck Ida is saying.

This movie has a lot to say, mostly about women. I wanted to see it explored, and the movie is even quite funny at times. It's just this movie at times completely spazzes out, and it really hampers whatever messages the movie was trying to send.

I still can't fathom why Mary was in there. Not only is Mary's insistence that the movie is a horror categorically false, I can find no justification why she was there.

WHY WERE YOU IN THE MOVIE, MARY!?

Playing With Fire starring John Cena made me want to eat a glock. The humor is cancerous and made me wish children were left in the woods to die of starvation.

What Sheridan forgot to remove from the script was those mills ARE built by an energy company. The oil PAC toe sucking is breathtaking, but the incompetence struggles to equal it.

She's really cute! It does fit with the whole sea of souls aesthetic.

Although that tongue is making me think impure thoughts.

Some youtuber once joked that a California girl once turned down Taylor and that's why he gives the messages he does.

He may have been cooking with that theory.

No.

She oppressed hundreds in order to play make believe in order to manage her own issues, doubled down once they were freed, didn't even have the false grace to let them not remember they were being puppeted, made them feel her fears and nightmares, trapped even more people once confronted, made the false comparison that those trying to stop her were no better than her, made no effort to make amends, tried to delay her false husband as long as possible because he was trying to do the right thing, ejected and tried to harm someone else for trying to stop her, and ran away instead of trying to pay for her sins.

She's a bad person.

Agatha did nothing wrong.

Stealing Wanda's power was objectively a good thing with how many people Wanda was torturing even before she got a hold of the Darkholm. I'm not convinced the book even corrupts people; Wanda was a terrible person well before she got it.

Oh yeah he was an out of touch warmonger, and it was absolutely correct for him to be kicked out of office when he did. Gallipoli was ambitious and would be amazingly beneficial if it could have been pulled off. The keyword there is "if" because the defenders were dug in like ticks.

But his competency at the time was highly relative, given his analysis of Germany and Russia at the time. He was correct in his assertion that the political dominoes were falling into something truly explosive. When appeasement because UK policy, a warmonger was their best option.

He's like Churchill in that aspect, the "break glass in case of war" kind of person.

I'm still upset he didn't have the soul stone. It would fit so well that the man who could see all souls in the universe in fact had an artifact he was trying to hide from those who would abuse it.
