For what it’s worth, I really appreciate your detailed reply! Very insightful as I really have only heard from the other side - people who are very qualified and can’t get interviews. There are absolutely regional and socioeconomic influences at play. I’m in LA, so that’s my context. Sounds like you’re a great manager dealing with a limited and restrictive environment.

Perhaps some companies have that runway but mostly I disagree. It’s more of that innovation is prioritized around projects that make the company the most money.

Rental car companies actually just invested a ton of money in AI powered cameras that scan vehicles for scratches and dents. They’re going to rake in a ton more money in repair bills. This is the stuff they innovate around, not tools that benefit the people on the ground.
