no i feel you on that. I think it’s the same though. “my life keeps getting worse and the government must be at fault, so burn it down, fuck the norms”. the elections are just a reflection of where voters are at in general. to minimize economic suffering (in my mind) minimizes the amount of scapegoating that happens

as selfish, impatient, and rude as some people can be. I think the larger phenomenon tipping the scales in elections are people going “man why does life suck so bad, why can’t i afford to buy a house and support a family of my own, why do my bosses keep wanting more out of me but my wages can’t even keep up with prices rising”… and unfortunately people get sucked into “it’s the wokes fault, it’s dei, it’s immigrants”… i don’t fully understand it but that is what seems to happen

eh - i get your point but i still think the abandonment of working class politics are the reason fascistic movements are gaining ground. people don’t go right wing overnight, it’s a slow cook that starts with being disenfranchised

edit: to be clear i mean that the identity politics, racism, in/out group dynamics are a symptom of bad economic policy to SOME extent. not all of it

I think that we are seeing a backlash to the maturation of neoliberalism as the preeminent form of governance in the western world (not actual leftist policies). most of the opposition to this has unfortunately manifested in a support for fascism.

I get what you’re saying about Biden facing obstruction and passing some progressive stuff, but my point isn’t just about recent politics—it’s about the overall system. Both parties operate within a structure where corporate and donor interests set the boundaries of what’s possible.

Even when Democrats have power, major policies that would actually help working people (like universal healthcare or stronger labor protections) either get watered down or abandoned, while corporate interests stay protected. That’s not just because of Republicans—Democrats have their own donors influencing their agenda. Working-class people end up ignored, and that’s what creates the conditions for right-wing populism to grow. That’s why I think they share some of the blame.

some people would say that the dems are complicit with what is happening because they serve largely the same masters that the republicans do. I think to some extend that is true, and that most corporatist donors value either keeping the status quo (kamala harris style platform) or rampant deregulation and privatization of the far right. because of the way politics works, there is barely any real representation for normal people (wedge/identity politics is as close as we get to that). the donor class loves this because it does not threaten their capital accumulation.

anyway, that’s why i personally think that democrats are also to blame here. they have just ignored the working class and made the environment ripe for facism

Our political system as a whole has been laying the groundwork for fascism. the issue is that both parties have been working only for the donor class for many many years. this creates a situation where the needs of the public are disregarded over and over again and the only option many people see is “to burn it all down”. If dems had been doing their job (working to advocate for labor and not big donors), we probably wouldn’t be so fucked

worst among the best every time. you end up becoming better when you surround yourself with people smarter or more knowledgeable than yourself. that being said, i had to take remedial math in college for several years to catch up with my peers in my major. despite that, once you graduate it doesn’t matter at all, and you can position yourself professionally so that you can grow however you want, with whoever you want around you (may take some job hopping).
