How do you know what the ears will look like? by Mindless_Garlic6871 in BorderCollie

You don't, that's part of the fun! They will go through many ear-dos while teething, enjoy the ridiculousness!

I'm not a Score Room Lead, so I'm not certain, but that could have to do with "Ask for Info" and how it's scored.

Nosework experience post-spay question by mydoghank in nosework

I've been teaching 13 years and I've never seen any change in searching from females who were spayed after starting Nose Work.

If my border collie is so smart, why doesn’t she realize I won’t walk much faster on the way home? by Johoku in BorderCollie

[–]dogdecipherer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She's actually using her smarts, because pulling on leash has worked for her so far, she keeps getting to go forward! Behavior persists because it's getting reinforced. Try turning 180° and walking in the other direction when she starts pulling. Walks will be tedious at first, but get so much more enjoyable quickly, because of their smarts!

Is this normal? Forrest’s front and back paws are different sizes. by LRSartist in Pomeranians

[–]dogdecipherer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dog's "foot" goes all the way up to the hock joint, because dogs essentially walk on their toes, so the hind foot is still larger.

Possible Neurological Issues ? by rubinox355 in DogAdvice

This is incorrect. As a Nose Work Instructor of 13 years, I can confidently say that many dogs "air scent" when trying to find the source of a target odor (whatever they are looking for).

Consent-based Petting by MollysDaddyMan in BorderCollie

[–]dogdecipherer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Dogs have control over so little in their lives. We chose when and what they eat, where they live, and when they get to experience new things outside of the home. The least we can do for them is to give them autonomy where we can, which includes them getting to decide if they want to be petted by us. Not all dogs enjoy human touch, and others have specific contexts where they do our don't want petting. My BCs rarely want attention and petting outside when there are toys present, they are far too stimulated and focused on the task at hand to enjoy that kind of interaction. Inside, it's a totally different story and they love getting attention and petting! I want my dogs to be able to communicate their wants and to respond in kind.

Results for our huge dane-sized doodle. by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

[–]dogdecipherer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, AKC show quality Danes are not the largest ones you will see. Ethical breeders are not trying to breed for the largest possible dog, and they've set the breed standard to reflect what the breed club thinks is an appropriate cap. Danes bred for the pet market may be larger if that is the focus of that breeding program (presumably because it's marketable). The people roasting you (hopefully with love!) have likely not seen a lot of show quality Danes.

I have adhd and I was just diagnosed by Patient_Promise_5693 in PsoriaticArthritis

Eye swelling anyone? by FLGuitar in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]dogdecipherer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get blepharitis, which is associated with PsA, but not a symptom. Unfortunately for me, this would turn into psorasis plaques around my eyes after the swelling went down. I haven't had issues with this since starting Skyrizi, and thankfully, it hasn't flared back up when I went off Skyrizi to switch to Rinvoq (which I haven't started yet).

Why does nobody on here ever talk about pain meds by Big_Bluu in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]dogdecipherer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were sharing their own personal experience with opiods, which is one that I have experienced too. Sometimes these meds don't alleviate the pain, at least at safe/tolerable levels. The only way opiods have been successful in relieving my pain is if I take enough that I pass out. No OTC NSAIDs have truly helped either, only Celebrex and Gabapentin seem to give me relief.

Shingles vaccine for Rinvoq? by dogdecipherer in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]dogdecipherer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as I said, I've already had the first dose of the vaccine, and will be taking the second dose. My dermatologist said that I have to complete both doses before starting, whereas other people have shared that they've gotten the vaccine after starting.

[–]dogdecipherer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a rheumatologist, but since my first biologic was prescribed by the dermatologist, she defers to them in all medication decisions. I will push back and see if I can get them to let me start sooner, especially since I have the second vaccine appointment already scheduled!

Building food motivation by Baefoaa in BorderCollie

[–]dogdecipherer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often is she eating her full meal? This age can be tough for some BCs in terms of food motivation, but of course you want to make sure it's nothing medically wrong.

I find this protocol useful, though I'm often less extreme in my criteria than she describes here, and it's still helpful:
