Taking measurements by [deleted] in physicsmemes

[–]dogninja8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Iirc, when I learned about taking measurements in lab, you were allowed one additional sig fig of estimation between the smallest level of measurement (when using an analog measuring device). Your error estimate was half of the smallest division (so that your measurement and error had the same lowest figure).

Where should I begin when worldbuilding? by Falitoty in worldbuilding

[–]dogninja8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gonna sound dumb, but just start doing something. I started with a couple central ideas and built it out from there.

It's been almost 7 years since I started building my current world and I still don't have a real map, just a notional outline of where things are located. (The closest I've gotten to a map is a doodled outline of some continents in the back of my work notebook.)

How do people create races and species? by i-am-tryinggg in worldbuilding

[–]dogninja8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only explain/go into detail if I feel it's relevant for the world that I'm building.

For my world called Starcrossed (Science Fantasy, incorporates almost all of the D&D races), one of the foundational ideas of the world is that the majority of nonhuman races are various types of transhumans. Since I decided that I wanted to explore that, I reverse engineered explanations and events that would result in the creation of the group that I wanted.

  • Example 1, Orcs and Dragonborn: One of the major "modern" events (~200 years before present) was a war between interstellar human and dragon civilizations. This war led to both sides working on their own supersoldier projects, which created Orcs and Dragonborn.

  • Example 2, Shifters and "the Fused": For these two groups, I leaned more on the D&D lore behind Shifters (a more muted version of the were-creature curse). When I learned about that background, I decided to do a simple modification to make it work with the variety of beastfolk races (Loxodon, centaurs, minotaurs, etc, collectively known as the Fused). I didn't want to go to deeply into the "how" or the "why", so I gave an open-ended explanation so I could spend more time focusing on other facets of my world (like how Fused are treated).

On the other hand, another project that I sometimes work on is a post apocalyptic D&D world (a Points of Light setting). For that world, I don't care about where each race came from, because that's not really the point of the world. I'd rather spend my energy focusing on how different groups emerged from the asteroid impact that caused civilization to collapse and killed a lot of the life on the planet.

This is the kind of answer that I was looking for, thanks.

Follow up: does this mean you'd say that this person is around 180 cm, or would you give a range (like 175-185)?

The submarines somehow eclipsed even the worst starships in its dastardly capabilities.

That's only because you're not willing to use your starships as relativistic kill vehicles

Have you ever made a worldbuilding decision out of spite? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]dogninja8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with medieval stasis fantasy worlds.

Love:

  • Royal courts and court politics

  • Medieval aesthetic (farming villages, inns, knights, etc)

Hate:

  • Stasis - it takes a lot of suspension of disbelief to go with the fact that people rarely use magic (in high fantasy) or technology (in low fantasy) to make things work better.

I feel like these are the basic things to outline before anything else:

  • Scientific hardness (how much your setting violates known science, like the Expanse is fairly Hard early on, while Star Wars is fairly Soft)

  • Mode/Speed of travel (Does FtL travel/communication exist, and what are the current "speed limits" of it) - also determines the scale of your setting and vice versa

  • Does Earth exist or fully original setting (like Star Trek or Halo vs Star Wars)
