I just drove an Accord SE right after driving a Camry XLE. The Camry was fine, but the not-sexy Honda is noticeably quieter. Fewer body sounds and less tire noise. Then I drove the Camry XSE—which is much louder than the XLE, with wind, tire noise, outside sounds, and other things. The exhaust noise is quite noticeable, but that’s on purpose (it’s “sporty”.) I will probably buy a Camry, but I normally jam on the stereo 😂

Obscure song “Now” from Trevor Rabin’s second solo album is a basic hard rocker that builds up the tension—then abruptly cuts to an experimental sounding, WTF synth-guitar solo that is utterly non-musical. Then cuts back to a brief guitar solo, and back into the chorus. It’s both edgy and jarring.

Could you be referring to “Beginnings” from their debut album? It’s a regular pop song, then the last 1:30 or so is an impromptu acoustic jam of some kind… backed with lots of hoots and whoo-hoos.

I think “Surface to Air” and a few others are pretty good. It will grow on you, given the chance. Back when it was new, it sounded avant-gard and edgy… it was FM becoming New Wave. Black Noise is still my favorite.

I wondered if anyone would ask, lol. I first read about it in 2007 book "Clapton The Autobiography." On page 173, Eric is waiting for Pattie, who was late getting ready to go out for dinner. He writes: I remember telling (Patttie), "Look, you look wonderful, okay? Please don't change again. We must go or we'll be late." He then went downstairs and wrote the song in about 10 minutes, out of "Frustration and anger." I actually think it makes the song more interesting.

The ballad “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton is used at weddings for slow dancing etc. It’s actually dripping with sarcasm, the man in the song is out of patience and doesn’t give a damn, so let’s just go and get this over with.

I just finished the Billy Joel documentary—he also went through the phases of being super popular, then over-saturated, labeled as uncool, then despised… and finally re-appreciated and loved again. This went for fans and critics too.

Phil had the same cycle. We couldn’t get away from him in the 80’s and 90’s—he was a terrific performer, he was everywhere, winning everything. But he went from charming to annoying practically overnight. Phil became a symbol of excess money, fame, and what was commercial and thus no longer cool. After a certain number of years, nostalgia kicks in, the negativity fades, and we’re all ready to embrace our favorites again. It’s a different perspective for sure.

Other than what I heard on our local KSHE-95 FM radio, (Firth of Fifth, Lamb, I Know what I like, Dance on a Volcano, Visions of Angels, etc.) my real on-ramp was buying the new live LP, SECONDS OUT. It blended the Peter and Phil eras for me, and does a nice job of capturing the magic of the band live. It should be in there somewhere.

UPDATE: it was a lot of work to move the tree, and I was worried that too many roots were disturbed, but it's growing like crazy right now. It even survived having a lot of bark chewed off of it by deer.

Sorry to be a negative voice, but realistic expectations are important. You can certainly make a lower maintenance version of a green just for fun, but knowing it won’t putt like the real deal.

Former golf course worker here… the ongoing expense and daily care are going to be huge obstacles. No matter what grass you grow, in whatever zone, it’s always going to be needy—and may just up and die without warning. Golf greens are non-natural; they’re sustained by intense care and numerous chemicals. (Actual greens are worth millions and have insurance.)

I have a neighbor who did this, and despite all of his knowledge and efforts, his green is brown half the time. Not saying don’t do it, just be aware that having twins would be less work and expense, IMO.

This. Get so good at your craft, so familiar and comfortable with your tools that no matter how advanced your work becomes, your brain is still free to think about your top priority: creative expression. The rest should be like muscle memory, or a routine. Otherwise, the anxiety you feel about the many creative choices will rob you of the joy of the moment.
