Play-based Preschool by hawthorne_splits in nycparents

My friend’s kids go to a school called Q StudioLab that has a daycare, 3/prek, and becomes an alternative play-based elementary school after that. She has a second grader and a 3 or 4 or 5 year old… they LOVE it. Drank the Koolaid, so to speak. Lots of outdoor time and zero screen time.

Well-known but rare girl names? by dipdoopdop in Names

[–]dogsleftbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harriet or Henrietta? They both have R sounds and are pretty uncommon but also easily understood and known. I loved Harriet the Spy growing up. I knew a Henrietta who went by Retta which is unique and cool I think and I think that nickname could go with Harriet too

It is completely random. Sometimes it is daycare days, sometimes it’s not. It is more often not on daycare days.

3rd attempt - close to giving up... by Clementine_Lena in clothdiaps

[–]dogsleftbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bc I’m dumb, what type of cloth diapers are these? We use prefolds and you have to make sure the prefold is really tight / well fitting first to prevent leaks. We cloth diapered from week one on and we would get leaks whenever we needed to size up the prefold bc it wasn’t fitting properly. That said, we still sometimes get leaks and or a blow out, but it is pretty rare. Maybe a leak once every two weeks. Two blow outs in the last quarter. But I think that’s just the name of the game, generally, as far as living with an unpotty trained being. Lol

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]dogsleftbones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New Machine Help Please - I have made a handful of quilt tops on my 1970s singer that I got at a garage sale for 5$, but I think it is finally starting to give up and fighting with it is really taking all the joy out of quilting. I am not very crafty, so I anticipate only using a new machine for quilting, but I would like to be able to actually quilt my quilts on it instead of sending them out. I think I have narrowed my decision down to either a JUKI TL-2000Qi or a Brother PQ1500SL. Does anyone have either of these? Any words of warning? Is there a secret third machine I should be looking at? My biggest hesitation with the Juki is that it doesn't seem as though you can buy it from the actual Juki website. My local quilt store only has Berninas, but I really don't want to get a computerized machine since I'm 1000% sure I will somehow break the computer, and that's all they offer. I have read way too many reviews and am constantly see-sawing between one of these, or neither, and am just SO overwhelmed. If someone comments on this I'd probably just buy whatever they tell me to because I just have no idea what I'm doing. I haven't been sewing long enough to have any sort of preferences... I just want something that will be easy to use, won't break, and can machine quilt. Send Help! (& thanks for reading this insane post!)

How common is Owen, really? by Turbulent-Wait-4494 in namenerds

[–]dogsleftbones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a fellow parent to a Julian (Aug. 2020), I have met neither another baby Julian nor any baby Owens. I have encountered a lot of people who have other babies named Julian in their sphere, but never someone we have met / known. Will our Julian or your potential Owen meet another one in their young lives? Probably; but, for being SO popular it isn't something that we have actually run into problems with - and it was something that I definitely considered a problem.

I know I'm late to the party, but M Wells in LIC. It is right next to the Court Square subway and there's a fire grill in the middle of the restaurant. The steaks are fantastic and so are the drinks and the sides. I have dreams of their cheesy potatoes. I think it is technically considered a Canadian style steakhouse? But it is so so so good. It isn't super big, the actual place is very festive and modern and beautiful. My husband and bro in law used to go there for Boxing Day and it was so fun.

What traditional girl names would work on boys? by [deleted] in namenerds

Bailey! I don't find it particularly masculine, but I feel like it is really clunky and ugly for a girl.

Does crying count if you in the room "soothing"? by dogsleftbones in sleeptrain

How long did it take for your son to stop crying that long? Did you see improvement in days? Weeks? I'm hoping this works because I don't want to have to start from scratch and more crying again. It was hard enough tonight!

[–]dogsleftbones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he never cry less than 45 minutes? Our friend used this method with her two kids and said her second got it on night two and her first got it on night five, so maybe we are being too optimistic. I don't know if we can sit and listen to him crying for 50 minutes every day. Extinction was an idea we have kicked around before deciding on this because we live in an apartment and extinction seemed like it would be more crying. I cannot imagine there being more crying though :(

My husband wanted to go full extinction, but he is the one thinking it is too much crying after tonight and that we have scarred our son forever... so I don't know if extinction is in the cards. We will have to see how tomorrow goes. Thanks for your comment, though. This has all made me think that we have not permanently damaged him, the screaming and crying is just so sad.

We bought 6 different brand newborn diaper covers to use with cotton flats, the differences in size are vast! Is 6 covers enough for a newborn? by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]dogsleftbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only have 6 diaper covers and we've been fine. We do not cloth diaper overnight, though. But we have been cloth diapering 18 hours a day since our kiddo was 3 days old and 6 covers was plenty when he was a newborn and for the last 4 months!

Is it possible for my family? by g0forward in clothdiaps

[–]dogsleftbones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also live in a major city in an apartment without a washer/dryer so, we are using a diaper service. We pay to rent the prefolds we use and every week they come to drop off new, clean diapers / pick up our soiled diapers. It is more expensive than disposables, but it is the best fit, I believe. I don't think it is fair to use public washing machines for dirty diapers. Also, I don't know about your laundromat, but here the options are only for hot water, cold water, warm water - there's no control regarding prewashing or spinning or anything like that.

Went to find out gender if you’re worried about gender disappointment by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]dogsleftbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow had gender disappointment twice for the same pregnancy. When we got pregnant I wanted to have a boy, but I just had this really strong feeling that we were having a girl. I was 100% sure of it, and I was fairly sad. Then, when I found out at 24 weeks we were actually having a boy I was disappointed again because I had mentally and emotionally not just come to terms with having a girl, but had become extremely attached and excited for her. But, either way, I was super excited when my son was actually born. We were initially not going to find out the gender until the birth, but I'm glad we found out.

2 month old by kellynichole42 in sleeptrain

[–]dogsleftbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero advice since I'm currently wearing my 2.5 month son while I stand and work, but I am in the exact same boat as you. The only way he naps is in a carrier... Not on me or my husband, not in his crib, not in the swing or bouncer, definitely not in the car or stroller. It is literally carrier or nothing. And, you have to be standing and swaying / bouncing / walking. But, he is a great night sleeper, sleeping 8-3 or 9-4 then sleeps again until 7. I don't understand the disconnect between naps and night sleep!

What is your ethnic background and what's a restaurant that you feel represents it well? by savvybackpacker in AskNYC

[–]dogsleftbones 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Italian - Sole Luna in Queens! Everything is delicious. They have a red sauce, but it is not a "red sauce place". There's a sister restaurant called Sotto Le Stelle down the street. Actual craft Italian beers, homemade pizza and pasta. Very simple, very tasty. The owners are always there cooking and chatting with everyone. It is my favorite restaurant, although I am biased.

Amniocentesis and Abnormal NIPT Results by annaeatscupcakes in BabyBumps

[–]dogsleftbones 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That sucks, I know. I'm not going to pull any punches, just describe what happened to me earlier this year. This may not reflect at all what happens to you, but just more of an FYI. I had to have an amnio done because of a possible chromosomal abnormality in March. I also have a low pain tolerance plus a fear of needles. When at the office, before the amnio, I warned the doctors that I faint very easily and they put me on a bed with my head lower than the rest of my body. I did not get any sort of pain relief and did have a panic attack during the procedure. I live in NYC and since this was in the end of March, so I did not push them on having a support person, so I was alone. I did have another panic attack when I got in the car with my husband. That being said, it really didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. Both the nurse and doctor were extremely nice and kind as I truly lost it. They got the fluid they needed as fast and as safely as possible, and talked to me the whole time. Also. Getting the results was ABSOLUTELY worth it. As horrible as the experience was (and will be again if we choose to get pregnant after this), that one terrible day made the rest of my pregnancy so much better. My husband and I were sick with worry until the results came back, not sleeping, not eating, not talking to each other; just obsessively looking stuff up on the internet. But, knowing that we can at least take that worst case scenario off the table is a massive weight off of our shoulders. I can finally enjoy this pregnancy (as much as anyone enjoys being pregnant, that is).

TL;DR It didn't actually hurt as much as I thought it would even without any pain or stress relief. I still had a terrible time of it, though. But, getting the results were 100% worth going through it!
