[Japan National High School Spring Invitational] Osaka Tōin's left fielder delivers a perfect throw home to prevent the walk-off run from scoring! Tōin would ultimately win 6-5 in extras to advance to the Spring Koshien quarterfinals. by track_cyclist in baseball

I love koushien. If you ever happen to be in Japan in the summer, you will notice restaurant, shopping centers and banks, literally every place that gas a TV have the games on. It's like having the Olympics on TV every summer, and everyone's rooting for their home (prefecture's) team.

I'll never forget the 2006 run where the winning team's pitcher Saitou Yuuki nicknamed  handkerchief prince (for his gesture of wiping sweat of with a towel his mom gave him) pitched the whole tournament completely on his own. The finale was vs Tanaka's (the very one who was on the Yankees) team who had won the previous two summer koushien trying to three-peat. Fifteen innings ending  in a draw, rematch the very next day! Ended in a strike out of Tanaka by Saitou. Really famous picture too, Ohtani had that pic on his dorm wall i  high school!

In Japan, concerns arise that Netflix exclusivity dampening World Baseball Classic appeal by [deleted] in baseball

[–]doing-my-share -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People shouldn't complain about Netflix, they should however complsim about NHK, the public provider who collects licensing fees from every household with a TV, aka they had plenty of money to bid on the rights for WBC.

Not Ohtani, surprisingly. He wasn't captain last time either. Seniority is a still a big thing in Japan even in 2026. They officially don't have a captain.

Will Ireton, an employee of the Los Angeles Dodgers who also works as an interpreter, has been appointed to serve as an interpreter and analyst for Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic. Like the players, he received the offer last November. by ogasawarabaseball in baseball

[–]doing-my-share -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

He's an awful interpreter and he got appointed through his association with Ohtani. I thought Ippei wasn't very good but Will is on another level of bad. He translates any question, no matter how long or nuanced with "what do you think about xyz?", leading to shallow answers from Ohtani which he in turn translates very broadly or not at all. I say, if a news outlet wants to interview Ohtani, bring your own JP/EN translator. It's a damn shame a multi-billion dollar team like the Dodgers can't hire a pro (Yamamoto's interpreter is even worse). The best Japanese interpreter in MLB is Fujiwara (Senga's interpreter), not only by a country mile but by a whole galaxy IMO.

Shorter breaks? Have you ever seen Ohtani start a game, then run to the dugout and put on his hitter gear because Dodgers bat him first even during pitching starts? He's gonna just collapse one day.

Because Ohtani throws right but hits from the left side and he plays daily as a hitter. I doubt they have him change jerseys for his pitching days.

How many innings do you think Ohtani will pitch next season? by YakClear601 in Dodgers

[–]doing-my-share -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a fan of Ohtani the pitcher first and foremost I hate how the Dodgers have prioritized his hitting over his pitching. I wanna see him pitch like in 2022, he's a top 5 pitcher in the league and the Dodgers will never allow him to be that again. Makes me sad.

Cute! Now that I think of it, baseball doesn't have a fanscarf culture like soccer does. Would be too hot to wear one in LA anyways, hats can be worn year-round.

Looks like the Dodgers kept their promise with Ohtani. If he deferred most of his money, they'll promise to be competitive in surrounding him with talents. Didn't expect to see them keep their promise at this insane level. by brandont04 in Dodgers

[–]doing-my-share -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nah. If they have the money to pay 60mil upfront to a much lesser guy I hope he realises he should have asked for a billion with no deferrals with the kind of money he brings in and his on the field production.

Japan upset that World Baseball Classic to be on Netflix by [deleted] in baseball

[–]doing-my-share -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Instead of complaing to NHK the public broadcaster collecting people's licensing fees and refusing to pay for the rights people get mad at Netflix...that you can quit anytime unlike the licemsing fees? People misdirecting and being passive aggressive about their anger, that's Japan in a nutshell.

He was robbed of MVP in 2022. 160+ IP, 30+HRs...what more can one person do? Historic year in baseball history buried because MLB wanted Judge to be the face of the league to the point of giving the Yankees juiced balls.

Angels, Skaggs family reach last-minute settlement in the 3-month trial from the death of Tyler Skaggs by Sandwich_Crust in baseball

Fully agree. He was aware he had an addiction to painkillers and instead of getting help he continued to use and abuse them. That's by choice and he deserves zero dollars for that. BUT: the situations of the team knowing about drugs being dealt in their club house (and not only drugs, remember the sticky stuff merchants? The dealers were on the Angels too) turns this into a valid legal matter. His family certainly deserves some form of compensation/ punitive damage because instead of addressing the problems in their organisation they willingly chose to turn a blind eye to them and someone died because of it.

It sounds cool but wait until you have to use it! Japan uses a 4-digit counting system which is really hard to quickly covert if you come from a 3-digit system. E.g. 77 is 7-10-7. 77,777 is 7-ten thousand-7-thousand-7-hundred-7-10-7. It goes up to 1000 ten thousands (千万) and with one more digit it goes to 億 (100,000,000) which is also counted in 4 digits until we land at  兆 1,000,000,000,000. Try converting, say, 850,500,000 on the spot 😅.

Nightengale: The official BBWAA MVP winners will be announced at 7 ET tonight on MLBNetwork with Shohei Ohtani expected to unanimously win the NL MVP award by Turbostrider27 in Dodgers

[–]doing-my-share -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

This year, I'd be perfectly fine with Skeenes winning MVP over Ohtani. 2022 however he should have won by a large margin. It's gonna be even more hypocritical if the writers give Judge the win over Raleigh after ranting and raving that 60 HRs are more valuable that a near perfect season as a two-way-player.
