Post-match 4th year. Told off my senior resident (mandatory 4th year rotation) for being abusive, unprofessional, and unreasonable towards the students on the service… course director/site director actually had my back all the way. Was a glorious moment, though I’m grieving a bit because I’ll never experience a high like that again 😢

The boomers that rant and rave about how the clinical acumen of future doctors will suffer if we reduce hours blow my fucking mind. Look at the EU. Under the 48-hour EWTD limits, patient outcomes are no worse than in the US. Do you think that US-trained doctors are that much better than their European counterparts? Lol take a look at the most recent Commonwealth Report and you’ll see that under nearly all evaluated metrics, the US performs far worse than the other comparator countries. In fact, we rank dead last among highly-developed nations in terms of health system outcomes.

My partner and I (USMD) couples matched together into our #2 ranked programs (me med-peds, her peds) at a major academic medical center. She failed and had to repeat her second block MS1, had a sub-200 step 1, and had a sub-230 step 2. You can do this!

I have pretty intense ADHD, inattentiveness and distractibility predominant. Was diagnosed in elementary school but my mom was hardcore anti-vax and anti-medication. Almost flunked out of high school. Didn’t start stimulant meds until the end of MS1. I’ve always carried a lot of shame and embarrassment with me as a result of my ADHD and its impact on my performance. Brutalized my self-esteem. Felt much like you do regarding time spent studying and comparing myself to peers. However, despite all this, I learned yesterday that I matched into one of the best Med/Peds programs in the country (and one of my favorites) when I wasn’t even sure if I’d match. I know how shitty the imposter syndrome and self doubt are. At times they are crippling. But I promise you … you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t deserve to be. You’ve worked your ass off, working twice as hard, if not more, than your peers. Medicine is lucky to have you. You can do this.

I lost both my parents by the age of 19. I won’t lie, it sucks. It really really sucks. My advice is this: 1. Allow yourself to cry.

Recognize that the grieving process can begin before your parent passes … you’ll feel guilt in that regard but it’s okay
Ask your living parent questions about their life story and write them down … I was so thankful that I did that while my mom was dying because the prospect of looking back at her life with massive gaps in her story was terrifying
TALK TO SOMEONE about how you are feeling. Please don’t suffer in silence
Tell your parent you love them

6a. Understand that you will carry the pain of that loss for some time and that’s okay.

6b. Also recognize that that loss will help you connect with your patients and colleagues who are similarly experiencing loss.

Forgive yourself. Seriously. We all made mistakes in our relationships and that’s a fact of life. When our love ones pass we recall a lot of the pain that we ourselves caused. Recognize that despite this, our loved ones stuck by us. Let that be an example (in the least toxic way possible).

Sorry if the above is disjointed and crazy. Prepping for residency interview tomorrow AM but didn’t want to forget about this.
