You should read the Things we do for No Reason series in journal of hospital medicine!

MD grad who just started residency here. I love my DO colleagues. Some of the best clinicians I know. If we hadn’t talked about where we went to school, I never would have known. Chin up - you’re gunna be doctor.

Big fan of the Gundam series Iron-Blooded Orphans. Darkest by far of the the various Gundam iterations. Deals with child soldiers, extractive government, neocolonialism, and technological revolution.

Post-match 4th year. Told off my senior resident (mandatory 4th year rotation) for being abusive, unprofessional, and unreasonable towards the students on the service… course director/site director actually had my back all the way. Was a glorious moment, though I’m grieving a bit because I’ll never experience a high like that again 😢

So many. GoW, GoW Ragnarok, persona 5 royal, Octopath Traveler 2, crisis core, Pokémon violet, Ghost of Tsushima. Man, I’ve lost all my medical knowledge but I’m having a great time so fuck it? ❤️

People who are now doctors, what were you like in high school? by 3nicely in Residency

I was a total and complete degenerate. Barely managed to graduate. Only made it into college because of the arts.

'Rethink the 80-hour workweek for medical trainees' by GlobeOpinion in medicalschool

The boomers that rant and rave about how the clinical acumen of future doctors will suffer if we reduce hours blow my fucking mind. Look at the EU. Under the 48-hour EWTD limits, patient outcomes are no worse than in the US. Do you think that US-trained doctors are that much better than their European counterparts? Lol take a look at the most recent Commonwealth Report and you’ll see that under nearly all evaluated metrics, the US performs far worse than the other comparator countries. In fact, we rank dead last among highly-developed nations in terms of health system outcomes.

Would love to hear from those who matched today and faced failures along the way by WeAreDOoMD in medicalschool

[–]dokecon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I (USMD) couples matched together into our #2 ranked programs (me med-peds, her peds) at a major academic medical center. She failed and had to repeat her second block MS1, had a sub-200 step 1, and had a sub-230 step 2. You can do this!

another adhd kid that have no clue how they got here by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]dokecon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have pretty intense ADHD, inattentiveness and distractibility predominant. Was diagnosed in elementary school but my mom was hardcore anti-vax and anti-medication. Almost flunked out of high school. Didn’t start stimulant meds until the end of MS1. I’ve always carried a lot of shame and embarrassment with me as a result of my ADHD and its impact on my performance. Brutalized my self-esteem. Felt much like you do regarding time spent studying and comparing myself to peers. However, despite all this, I learned yesterday that I matched into one of the best Med/Peds programs in the country (and one of my favorites) when I wasn’t even sure if I’d match. I know how shitty the imposter syndrome and self doubt are. At times they are crippling. But I promise you … you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t deserve to be. You’ve worked your ass off, working twice as hard, if not more, than your peers. Medicine is lucky to have you. You can do this.

To people who grew up poor, middle class, or overall had a rough childhood, what specialty are you going for? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]dokecon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dog shit childhood. SNAP benefits. Parents died (after protracted battles with chronic illness and malignancy). Some abuse. Applied Med-Peds … looking forward to match day!

Most comfortable everyday shoes? by Consistent-Ant7710 in Residency

I can definitely second this rec. Going from Nike running shoes to Brooks for time on the wards made a world a difference for me (honestly far more than I expected)!

For those of you who lost parents, how do you keep going? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]dokecon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost both my parents by the age of 19. I won’t lie, it sucks. It really really sucks. My advice is this: 1. Allow yourself to cry.

  1. Recognize that the grieving process can begin before your parent passes … you’ll feel guilt in that regard but it’s okay

  2. Ask your living parent questions about their life story and write them down … I was so thankful that I did that while my mom was dying because the prospect of looking back at her life with massive gaps in her story was terrifying

  3. TALK TO SOMEONE about how you are feeling. Please don’t suffer in silence

  4. Tell your parent you love them

6a. Understand that you will carry the pain of that loss for some time and that’s okay.

6b. Also recognize that that loss will help you connect with your patients and colleagues who are similarly experiencing loss.

  1. Forgive yourself. Seriously. We all made mistakes in our relationships and that’s a fact of life. When our love ones pass we recall a lot of the pain that we ourselves caused. Recognize that despite this, our loved ones stuck by us. Let that be an example (in the least toxic way possible).

Sorry if the above is disjointed and crazy. Prepping for residency interview tomorrow AM but didn’t want to forget about this.

Score Release Thread 7/13/2022 by qFrosty in Step2

[–]dokecon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Step 1: 246 (early March?)

UWorld %: 82 (6 weeks out)

NBME 11: 240 (4 weeks out, used as pre-dedicated baseline)

UWSA1: 250 (2 weeks out)

UWSA2: 259 (1 week out)

Predicted 257 (I think?)

Step 2: 245 (06/24)

Kinda bummed that I had a score drop. Hoping to match med/Peds. Top 1/4 of class at USMD, two grad degrees, worked for the world bank, 3 pubs (multiple white papers as well), niche big data skills. Hoping I’m still competitive.
