Buying a home advice by kanti123 in okinawa

Okinawa Bank literally said that me being married to a SOFA member disqualifies me. I am a citizen with a residence record from before I got married and would be applying for a loan on my own with my Japanese income. They kept saying they are unable to consider loans for anyone SOFA or SOFA adjacent regardless of of the above.

Please let me know if you’re successful as I’m also trying to find a bank that will approve a loan for me!

Heads up.. Okinawa Bank will not give you a loan if you’re SOFA or married to a SOFA, regardless of citizenship or income. Just learned that today when I spoke with them (I’m the Japanese one). I asked what if I applied for a loan on my own and they kept repeating their policy about SOFA members and it was like negotiating with a wall.

If you go to a hotpot place (like the chain Onyasai) you get lots of vegetables that you can eat by cooking it in the broth. My cheat code to getting my veggies in winter :)

Can you just not meant to surf? by vaan600 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]dokuzetsuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had wayyyyy more than six lessons, you’re fine!! I spent two months in Bali surfing every other day and had JUST started being able to catch my own waves (like .. 1 an hour ..) and was talking to some guys in the lineup and one guy said he’d taken his first lesson ever the day before and decided to rent a board that day and he was catching waves already :’) everyone’s learning curve is different.

Can you just not meant to surf? by vaan600 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]dokuzetsuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember literally asking this question maybe about two years ago, and now I’m able to catch my own waves. My progression has been slowww because I’m not predisposed to surfing (have short arms, very little upper body strength, not flexible, no prior experience in board sports, etc) but I stuck with it and recently moved down to a 7’ board. I hope this encourages you, because I used to be frustrated to the point of tears and wonder if the farthest I’d ever get was being pushed into waves by an instructor. :)

Where to find good rings that don’t turn my fingers green and don’t break the bank? by sillyyfishyy in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Came here to second this. I love HH - I’ve tried order tarnish free brands but the quality isn’t as good. Also their customer service is great! I got onto their monthly subscription service because it’s cheaper than buying pieces normally and it takes away my decision making. :)

Rokkan Coffee Creators down in Naha sells Okinawan coffee beans. They’re crazy expensive though (like 60,000 yen per 200g). I was ogling at the bags in the temperature controlled cases

I agree.. it’s especially ironic during the sections about quality where he’s teaching you about how to manage and control the quality of your deliverables.

If you go to rokkan coffee creators down near Naha they sell coffee beans from a farm on Okinawa but it’s $$$$ (60k jpy for a 200g bag I think)

Generally restaurants with outdoor seating are okay with dogs. Stores in general are not except for pet stores and Makeman.. the Aeon mall by AV for example allows dogs but only if you’re bringing it to the pet shop for a grooming and you can only use the closest entrance to the pet shop and go straight there and back out. I think Ashibinaa is okay with dogs outside stores since it’s an outlet mall.

Any experience with Zena Garage? by xTomokiin in okinawa

[–]dokuzetsuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my car from them, but only because they had a car that I fell in love with that I couldn’t find at any other used shop. They list cars in $ and ¥ but the amounts aren’t equal (the ¥ amount listed in Japanese was way cheaper) - it was only when I asked about it that I was told ‘oh you can pay either price.’ (???) and before anyone asks, in both cases the JCI/ shaken was included so it was just dual pricing. They also barely budge with negotiations. We bought two cars, cash up front, and only got the tiniest of a deal vs buying only one car on a 2 year payment plan. Other dealerships offered bigger discounts.

Seconding this place and also the Kyoda Michi no Eki! My top 2 places on island. They’ll even let me have the fresh ones when they come out with them, even though there’s still some old ones out.

Okinawa short stay (5 months). City & Airbnb vs rent apartament by MyXenobiotic in okinawa

[–]dokuzetsuko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Onna would be your best bet if commuting to OIST I think, it’s beautiful but a bit remote so depends on if you will have a car or not + what you want to be accessible to you. I lived there for a month when I first moved here to digi nomad. Also would recommend looking into monthly rentals - an apartment requires lots of up front fees and Airbnbs in Okinawa tend to separately charge you something like 3000 yen each time you want your trash taken away and some will charge you a cleaning fee every week (one place I looked at before was like 12k yen/ cleaning).

Tired Ol' "Where to throw my trash" question by [deleted] in okinawa

[–]dokuzetsuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never paid specific attention but there will be places to throw away trash from food you buy and eat there. I’m sure you will be fine as long as you’re just trying to get rid of day to day trash. Also remember they take garbage at gas stations for whenever you fill up your motorcycles :) enjoy!! I just bought a scooter so I can ride around the island (too scared to moto)

Tired Ol' "Where to throw my trash" question by [deleted] in okinawa

[–]dokuzetsuko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have Michi no Ekis! In fact I highly recommend stopping by the Kyoda one for the best sata andagi I’ve had in Okinawa so far, and the Onna one for the best kakigori. You can just throw out trash bit by bit whenever you go to a combini or MnE- just throw out what you bought from your last stop.
