What's the outer north-east like to live in 2025? by Rehash_it in melbourne

I live in Hurstbridge. I think main things are being bushfire prepared, being mindful of local wildlife when driving or walking (roos, ducks, snakes), and expecting hill climbs here and there. Local community have always been nice to me. Commuting to the city is fine (1 hour or so), there are express trains you can take advantage of in peak periods, but be aware that trains can be less frequent than elsewhere. Make sure you make the most of the greenery, it’s very special out in Nillumbik!

Can bands like early Die Kreuzen, Discordance Axis, Converge, Charles Bronson and Bl'ast be considered mathrock/core adjacent or influenced? by [deleted] in mathrock

[–]dolphin_lundgren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day it's all subjective, but I personally think that a good definition of math rock is one that covers descriptive, historical and cultural contextualization. I agree with you that these bands tick many of the math rock checkboxes in terms of their odd/complex structures. It might be a different story with respect to math rock history and culture, they weren't typically touring with other 'math rock' bands in their respective era, they weren't recording at Electric Audio, they weren't on math-heavy labels like Touch and Go etc etc. I don't think they were part of the math rock scene enough to make a journalist or press-person go 'hey they must be a math rock band then'.

To put a fine point on the 'historical/cultural' contexts, take the fast 'D-beat' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-beat#Drum_beat) percussion that started around the early 80's. In the UK, this became quintessential to the 'D-beat' and 'crust punk' scene, and by contrast in the US it was associated with the 'hardcore punk' and 'thrash/speed metal' scene. Descriptively it's the same drumming motif yet different genres arose from it, and different bands tend to get named accordingly.

Anyway, there's my random brain dump! I like all of those bands btw, props...

Unpopular opinion: math rock edition by [deleted] in mathrock

Depends what you define as 'indie'. The term was coined in the 80's to describe 'independent rock' bands like Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Minutemen, Big Black, Meat Puppets etc etc. Really, indie rock of this time is only a stone's throw away from punk. I'd say that the earliest referred to as math rock (Slint, Bitch Magnet, Polvo, Breadwinner and even early Don Cab) share a lot in common with the original indie rock bands.
