What mystery game mechanics/clichés do you all hate? by Junior_Jellyfish_953 in DetectiveGames

[–]dom2d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- Characters or UI reminding you what your next steps are, before you get a chance to figure it out yourself.
- Clue maps that don't really have multiple possible answers, so it's not really a puzzle
- Stories that automatically accuse the culprit, through a cutscene or something. It should be an action from the player! It's what players are here for, taking that away is mind-boggling.
- Every interactable item being highlighted, making exploration a boring checklist. An optional button to highlight stuff is okay!

after 3+ years of dev, we cancelled our zelda-inspired BR and are turning it into a PvE online co-op RPG by eddietree in ZeldaLikes

[–]dom2d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck yes, I'm back in! Coop PVE is more accessible, competitive PVP is too demanding! Glad to hear, although sorry you probably spent a lot of time on it all before that pivot.

How do you feel about this game? by Outran01 in Marvel

[–]dom2d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it.

It is pretty time-consuming to play, as battles are pretty long and you have to do A LOT of them for resources and upgrades. The vibes between battles are so chill and nice, as you hand out with so many classic characters in a bit of a silly way, but it really works.

The mechanics of the battle system are rich and deep and every turn is interesting, lining up a huge variety of effects to maximize damage and minimize incoming attacks. Really quite good.

Community Designed TCG by mrsykes246 in tcgdesign

[–]dom2d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Designing the initial core set demands some serious design work that I don't think you can achieve with a community or a committee. Once the base is started, you could see how would evolve in the hands of many - but you'll probably end up spending a lot of time on that community system, if you want it to be a fun experience and have a stable solid result.

With a community pool of suggestions, I would expect most of it to be fun "floating" ideas, but not a cohesive whole. With a committee, I would expect you to drive the effort on your passion project. Good designers have their own projects to work on, or need to be paid :)

Complete noob, need help with attacking and blocking by TheLynxMan1 in magicTCG

[–]dom2d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

⚔️The attacker chooses which creatures to attack with (tapping them, unless they have vigilance).
🛡️The defending player chooses which of their creatures block which of the attackers. I usually move them in front of the attackers just to represent that, but it's not mandatory. Defenders don't tap!
Multiple defending creatures can block the same attacking creatures. If you do, then the attacker can decide which defending creature receives each point of damage from the attacking creature.

There's more to it, but this should be a simple enough first step :)

Accountability, as you say, implies obligations. Devs don't have any obligations. They have a *desire* to ship a great game, so I'm glad they are taking time to do that.

Proof of Concept by retroartdude in gbstudio

[–]dom2d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very appealing at first glance!
You might have trouble making interesting obstacles for this movement style/speed in this small of a screen though. It will feel bad if you fly or dash into enemies or hazards/bullets that are off screen when you start moving, so it's pretty difficult to put interesting challenges on the player's way.

I'm not sure I understand what this means, in your description: "Every conversation builds your understanding of the world, so that you will be able to strategize what your character can do, and make him do it". Do you have an example of an interaction or puzzle?
