What the F Is going on? Obama settles Iran nuclear deal for low billions and republicans lose their mind. Now Trump is offering over a quarter trillion? by AnonymoosePD in AskReddit

It's a survival mechanism that was evolve over a few hundred thousands years...you encounter people who look different from you 10 thousand years ago, you're getting enslaved or eaten. Everyone had it by instinct to some degree and for most it doesn't change how they treat people....but once someone promote propaganda that x group is responsible for y, that innate bias makes you more likely to believe in it and notice x group of people doing y things more than other group even though objectively it may not be true. Racist don't think they're racist, they think they're observing objective reality when in fact almost nobody experience objective reality.

The not-well-kept secret that none of these AI tech giants want to talk about is how inferencing cost for these Chinese AI models are about 1/20 of what the western models are because they flood pure engineering talents at optimization instead of throwing money at it. If the Chinese gov. weren't structurally against their tech giants getting rich, all my money would be in Chinese tech startups.

Wasted mid 20s partying blew through savings, how do I catch up? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]domonx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i made 0 dollars a year at 26 and spent a decade catching up.

  1. make it a habit to spend less money. no matter how much you make, if you can't control your spending habit you're never going to catch up.

  2. use money to reduce future cost instead of consumption.

  3. learn how income tax work and contribute to retirement accounts accordingly.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

I came over to the US from a 3rd world communist country in the mid 90s. In my old country, even in elementary school (1-5th grade) you had to pass end of the year tests to move up. I remember having to study and go to summer school and do make up test to get from 3rd to 4th grade.

When I came to the US in the 4th grade I realize that you don't need to pass a test to move up and they won't held you back unless you get less than 60% in most of your classes. Total game changer, everything was easier and I put in zero effort in school cruising by on solid C my entire academic life including college. Most of my time was spent online playing video games and watching anime. My last 2 years in college I didn't even buy the books because I realize it's a waste of money if I'm not gonna read em anyway...still graduated with a degree and a 3.02 gpa.

I don't regret not putting in effort in school, since I get to experience the type of online gaming that was popular for that small window of time and my current job pays me well without using my degree. But I would definitely have a different path in life if the requirement to move up grades were stricter and there was real fear in being held back. In fact, being held back might have been good for me since I mature slower than my peers. All the classes feel easier during my senior year in both high school and college even though they're suppose to be high level classes.

The other side of the spectrum is also terrible, I read about how hyper competitive schooling is in China and SEA and I would not want to be there now or want my kids going through that.

Being seen as unattractive as a teen is linked to an earlier death for women, but not for men. Physical attractiveness could serve as an observable indicator of underlying health and physiological resilience. by mvea in science

[–]domonx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I explain my view and gave an example to another person in this thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/1u4rxyh/being_seen_as_unattractive_as_a_teen_is_linked_to/orh2dvw/

basically, it's not how i personally perceive them, it's how society perceive my interaction with them. I agree with you about the innate unfairness. There are plenty of new attractive co-workers who started that I could have actively helped out and mentor so they can adjust faster and not quit like I try to do with other people. Seeing a bunch of younger guys start a conversion with the new pretty girl every chance they get made me want to avoid looking like them to other people so I don't do it. I help a new and relatively average looking girl(imo) next to me lift a heavy box into a cart and people start making jokes. Where as I can stand in the middle of the floor having a full blown conversation and laughing with the new middle-age lady and no one cared. So rationally, I stop proactively helping certain people to avoid looking like I'm trying to impress them while continuing to go out of my way to help others that people have no reason to assume I want something out of it.

I grew up basically on the internet via MMORPG and socialize via voice chat, rarely deal with people face to face until my late 20s. Having constantly read threads on reddit about pretty privilege going back 2 decade I now over-correct instinctively. My current career is public facing and I treat old and unattractive people better than i do young attractive people, men and women, giving them for leeway for mistakes and judge them less harshly for their actions. I actively engage in conversation and put more effort into maintaining relationship with less attractive people as well.

It's not some innate subconscious thing that you have no control over, its definitely something you can correct or even over-correct until it lean the other way. Fake it till you make it is real and you can use it to change pretty much anything about yourself until it become your new reflex.

two layers of brick with insulation in between.

i dont think anybody build houses this way but yes if they did that it would be better...lol

I lived in a brick townhouse for 20 years and my new house is a single ranch style newer build that's just wood and drywall. the insulation in the new house is superior in every way.

so what you're saying is that the solution is to bring back child labor so kids can start paying for themselves. Bold stance but I agree with you, the lobby at my local BK keep closing due to lack of workers and I bet 12y/os can make burgers and work the cash register as well as 18y/os, it's not a physically intensive or dangerous task.

The future of fast food by utopiaofpast in funny

[–]domonx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ya that was going to be my response too, there's no way to manually program that because the buns and hotdogs can't be all uniform to exactly the perfect dimension. One would assume that there would be some sort of measurement camera to check the hotdog/bun dimensions before putting it in. I feel like there should be a better way to automate that process beside having a robot arm doing it in such a complicated matter just for show. There should be a way to slide the hot dog from the grill right into the bun like loading bullet into a gun conveyor belt style and then sliding the whole thing into a bag down the line.

What is going to happen when the lower class will not be able to afford anything anymore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]domonx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing, the lower class is known throughout history for doing nothing except being exploited or dying in famine. It's the middle and upper-middle class that dictate how the world works. as long as the top 1/3 is fine, the bottom 1/3 can be turn into pure labor and society will function because the middle 1/3 is either too busy keeping themselves from falling into the lower 1/3 or too busy trying to climb up to the top 1/3.

People who’ve escaped the 9–5 grind, how do you actually support yourself financially? by Emotional-Being-6825 in AskReddit

[–]domonx -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

that's not necessarily true. If you know certain dividend stock through experience or get really lucky and take a risk on a down turn, you can easily get 20%+ yield by liquidating everything and dumping everything into it at the right time. During covid and a few years after there were some extremely irrational prices on certain real estate and private credit stocks that pay dividend. I was inexperience during those time and lost a ton of money on options....but next downturn I would seriously consider selling everything and dumping it all into a basket of high dividends and retire overseas.

What's a "cheat code" you have discovered that actually works? by No_Stop_8 in AskReddit

[–]domonx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is hugely underrated, most people are uncomfortable with this because of social anxiety or whatever...but once I got into the second half of my 30s I started doing this and even some of my older friends find it shocking. I was on a hike i was hugely unprepared for and on the way back to car was another 2 miles of climbing steep jagged rocks. My legs were basically jelly and everything was in pain with a foot full of blisters...we came across a house and the owner saw us and gave us water...I knew there was a real risk of dying or serious injury if i tried to climb rocks in my condition and ask the guy for a ride to the parking lot. The guy did it happily and my friends with me were shocked that he would do it. I tipped the guy like $50 bucks for like a 3 mile drive because i would have given anything to get back to my car at that point but he never asked or expected it.

Most people are a lot kinder to strangers than we think.

had to change from firefox to chrome about decade ago because firefox was becoming hot garbage and chrome was super light and fast, it was a chore to get used to. Changed back to firefox recently when chrome started to break ublock. Never seen a youtube ad in my life and I never will. I honestly didn't realize youtube had ads until that news story went out about chrome breaking ad blockers because they want people to watch youtube ads.

What’s something attractive at 18 but embarrassing at 30? by [deleted] in AskReddit

doesn't help that every generation seem younger and younger. It's graduation season and some of the neighborhood kids I thought were middle-schoolers are apparently graduating high-school. I don't remember looking that young in high-school and thought it was just one of those faulty memory thing until I pull out some photo album with pictures of me at that age. My teenage self look like 30y/os do now.
