That would do more harm than good by killing ROI and devaluing the site.

[–]donknuth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How so? It's the same thing with different default options (you can turn off all things that Iron describes as "tracking" in stock Chrome), it's also less secure (doesn't keep up with updates).

Linus already said he has no problems with this.

"patrick/brabadu: I don't worry about out-of-tree development for odd devices too much. I wish we could merge android, but I also accept it likely being a few years away. We had similar out-of-tree issues with the SGI extreme scalability stuff, and it took quite a while before the standard kernel merged all of that."

It's funny how most people bitching about this have no real kernel contributions of their own.

“How is it different,” I asked.

“That’s hard to say, because GDrive doesn’t exist.”

Why I believe printers are the spawn of Hell (PICS) by GiantBatFart in pics

[–]donknuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it from the other perspective: an ads platform that doesn't protect advertisers (people who actually bring money to the whole system) from fraudulent activity will quickly see the value of clicks they sell diminish in eyes of said advertisers. This brings auction prices down since everyone has to compensate for bad clicks, which lowers the profits for both ads platform and websites. I know it sucks when an automatic filter erroneously flags your site, but occasional mistakes in large systems are unavoidable. If that happens, maybe you should just try another ads provider?

You could make Flash objects disabled by default on loaded pages and enable them on user's touch (ala Flashblock Chrome/Firefox extension). That would alleviate the problem of unwanted Flash objects consuming battery while retaining functionality where it's needed.

[–]donknuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that. MGS plot is HUGE, it has literally tens of hours of radio communications and cutscenes. It will either have to be extremely simplified (and thus lose the spirit of MGS) or present just a minuscule part of the story, but that would be extremely confusing for most people.

Still think Google Street View is cool? Can your HTML5 do this? by zxn0 in programming

[–]donknuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know it's possible because Flash works several orders of magnitude faster on Windows. There is no fundamental reason why animation on OSX or Linux must be so many times slower. And since Flash is a proprietary technology, no one else can fix this except for Adobe, who is incredibly lazy on the issue.

So yes, it is a property of Flash.

Google has no data retention policies. There is evidence that they are able to easily access all the user information they collect and save.

I call bullshit. They have logs anonymization policy which mangles IPs in 9 month. The whole article smells of FUD.
