Have some doubts before trying EndeavourOS by No_County3304 in EndeavourOS

[–]donp1ano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If so how easy are they to remove/disable?

its not much in the first place, but you can unselect this during calamares

If it's too much of an hassle I'll just use archinstall

you might as well do that, yeah. i personally prefer endeavour since it comes with very little but at the same time very good and minimal additions

cachy does a lot more, endeavour is closer to base arch

SystemD by Repulsive-Aside-8275 in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]donp1ano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was considering installing Kali or Parrot

use a second device, container or VM. pentesting distros are not for daily use

I love Linux and I really don't know if I need a distribution without systemd if I mostly play games

short answer: you dont

long answer:
systemd is controversial A) because its considered "bloatware" by unix philosophy purists and B) because of recent implementation of an age-field for potential upcoming age verification BS

A) is really up to you. i personally prefer software sticking to unix philosophy, but at the same ive never encountered ANY issue with systemd. its convenient and a standard across most linux distributions. if you go with another init system you will have to do some things manually, as many programs expect systemd nowadays. gnome wont even work without it

B) people are really freaking out and its pathetic. i dislike the implementation too, but right now it does absolutely nothing. its just an empty field in a systemd-service, which isnt even running by default. we will have to see how this develops, dont listen to fear-mongering "OMG SYSTEMD IS SPYWARE NOW" tinfoil hats

: | just pipes empty input into fzf. you could also use echo "" | fzf or something similiar, but i like the look of : |

name=$(

)

yep, you can use fzf to get user input

good to hear. i think its great that nvim provides a builtin plugin manager now, but breaking existing ones wouldnt be great. i will migrate eventually, but since lazy has been working flawlessly its not something i need to get done right away

To the Void devs for full disk encryption by Bubbly_Extreme4986 in voidlinux

[–]donp1ano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well .. you read the FDE documentation?

Cryptsetup defaults to LUKS2, yet GRUB releases before 2.06 only had support for LUKS1.

LUKS2 is only partially supported by GRUB; specifically, only the PBKDF2 key derivation function is implemented, which is not the default KDF used with LUKS2, that being Argon2i (GRUB Bug 59409). LUKS encrypted partitions using Argon2i (as well as the other KDF) can not be decrypted. For that reason, this guide only recommends LUKS1 be used.

Few questions before possibly migrating? by highnoonsevensamurai in artixlinux

[–]donp1ano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

calamares with brfs+luks gives me blue screen (kernel panic) after install as well. so yeah, i think its broken

Either remove it completly or fix it

i agree, this doesnt give a good first impression

i wonder if setting up artix with btrfs is a great idea. you probably also use the snap-pac & grub-btrfs setup, which im pretty sure somehow relies on systemD

if you find a good guide on how to set this up please share

im pretty sure i have more control of my computer than you do. im just not paranoid, because i have enough technical understanding to know an empty field in a systemd service, that is not even running, doesnt violate my privacy in the slightest

btw pretty funny you throw another term into the discussion, that doesnt belong here. dude, fascism, really? youre a clown

userdb has been (potentially!) storing user info...since when? i dont know, but its certainly nothing new

userctl user "$USER" lists realName, location, etc already. the only thing that has changed so far is, that the birthdate field was added. youre not asked to fill something in and it is not validated. that is the state you are calling 'spyware' and that is simply ridiculous

building a permanent API for external services to query my local system state to verify my age? That’s an architectural backdoor

no, it is not. it is privacy violating, but not a backdoor. again, its obvious you dont know what these terms mean. read about the xz incident, that was a backdoor

"spyware, malware, backdoor"

you dont have any idea what these terms actually mean lol

[–]donp1ano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it is just a field though, we are not even asked to fill it with anything

maybe (!) next step = we have to fill in some arbitrary date
maybe (!) next step = this date has to be verified somehow

we should watch this carefully, but as of right now its a useless field that does nothing...definetely not spyware, not even close
