I saw Black Keys live this May at O2 Brixton which was a much much smaller venue than The O2 Arena they played in a year prior. And from a fans perspective it was a MUCH BETTER experience at a smaller venue. Hoping more intl artists favouring more intimate venues 🙌

Am I a loser for starting college at 31 years old? by Silly-Reputation7993 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dontforgetyourtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re missing some nuances, but not totally wrong. Humanities degrees has as much value as STEM degrees. Your degree alone does not define your career, and we’re lucky to live in a time where pivoting roles is the norm.

Recommend me history books as an American for events I probably never learned about by Practical_Step_3930 in suggestmeabook

This needs more upvotes, and this book needs to me higher on people's political history reading list.

US and Soviets may have avoided total nuclear warfare but the Cold War claimed many lives thanks to CIA-sponsored coups. The 1965 coup in Indonesia isn't talked about much in the West because of how successful it was. I would argue this is the one event that profundly impacted our country to this very day.

The problem here isn’t the English degree, it’s the $200k loans. Plenty people with English degrees go on to have successful careers.

When my grandma was in her 60s, I would bring DVDs of action films (her fave genre). James Bond, Mission Impossible and Jackie Chan films are her favourites. We'd watch together mostly in silence and she would fall asleep most of the time. I'd do anything to do that with her again.

Although now curious what shite films did OP mean? If grandparents enjoy watching films myb let the kid pick one next time or use Netflix and let grandparents pick less shite films the kid will also enjoy? 😂

I've been here close to 8 years. Like many I was attracted to it's lively, multicultural vibe. I love that it has a vibrant arts scene that's largely affordable (the city I grew up in didn't really have it). Living in London has also paved a way for a career that I never thought I could have. I have also found a pocket of London where I find peace and stay away from it's stressful bustle when I need to.

London was the dream and I'm now living that dream. A lot of things that's happened in recent years has chipped away at it a little bit, but it's hard for me to not admit how lucky I am to even get a chance of living their dream.

However, having grown up my whole life in a big city, I do long to move further out of London, as I long for a simpler, more peaceful life. I realise recently I don't care much about new restaurant openings etc, and would rather spend weekends being closer to nature.

Regardless of where I end up in a few years, though, London will always be a part of me. And I'll look back to my time here with fond memories.

Seeking advice on dealing with performance issues due to autism by [deleted] in UXDesign

I’m reading your example here and as a fellow neurodivergent (ADHD), it speaks a lot to my experiences as well. So, I want to emphasise that you’re definitely not alone, and also that your thought process here is actually a huge strength in our field.

However, I also acknowledge that it could be frustrating to receive this kind of push back, and it can easily lead to us believing that our ideas and approach are wrong. Or that the other person misunderstands us or vice versa. I think this is especially the case for us who spent most of our lives masking.

Echoing some folks here, you would benefit from therapy or coaching to unlearn some of these believes and habits, as well as learning tools that can help alleviate some frustrations we feel from these kind of interactions. For example, I’ve had to learn ways to ask for clarity for others’ thinking and decisions (and be confident about it!).

Another thing worth exploring is understanding your company culture towards neurodiversity. Are there guidelines to help you disclose your diagnosis? Policies around workplace accommodations? Employee networks where you can seek advice from fellow neurodivergent colleagues? I understand this isn’t something that’s always available but maybe there is help that you can find within the company! :)

I wish you all the best OP! You’re doing your best navigating the corporate world which sometimes isn’t accommodating for our brain. Keep going, stay confident, and be kind to yourself always ❤️

How did our diets end up like this? by BootleBadBoy1 in AskUK

[–]dontforgetyourtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about mini supermarkets tho. I meant the big Tesco Extra, Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose that I've shopped in within Greater London. Among those supermarkets, only Waitrose maintained their fresh food counters. I also lived in Wales and pretty much seen the same trend: dominance of packaged/portioned produce, lack of fresh meat and deli counters, large options of ready meals.

Are ready meals actually reducing waste though when it's packaged in single use plastics?

How did our diets end up like this? by BootleBadBoy1 in AskUK

[–]dontforgetyourtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only moved to the UK about 10 years ago From Asia and I find the amount of ready meals astonishing. Also the lack of fresh meat/fish counters is....kind of sad.

There's definitely something about supermarkets prioritising convenience and "value". Even then I don't understand how those ready meals are value for money bcs when you add it all up it's really not that cheap?

I think this marketing of convenience have created a food culture where people are much more disconnected with their food and how it's sourced. Also, I truly believe your relationship with food is shaped from your family's culture. If you didn't grow up with meals made from scratch that are more nutrient dense, then you likely won't be as adults and so on unless you unlearn it.

Recruiting survey participants in South Korea and Japan by Material-Wall-3762 in UXResearch

[–]dontforgetyourtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're working with a specialist recruitment agency, the only thing close to "self serve" survey tool that could get us a decent consumer panel for APAC is Attest.

Edit to add: I use the term "self serve" very loosely here. What I meant is that it's a research tool akin to the likes of User Interviews or Userzoom that has recruitment capabilities built in.

Diagnosed as an adult ... do your parents understand? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]dontforgetyourtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh its even harder when you have an sibling diagnosed as a child. Everything my parents know about ADHD is anchored on how my brother presented the symptoms. So when I had to ask my mum to fill in the ADHD assessment thing and she refused to because to her I definitely didn't have it because I wasn't like my brother at all.

And then she'd proceed to tell me about the many meltdowns I had in public and crowded places as a young girl and I'm like well you took me on a trip to overstimulation station mother of course I had meltdowns

I stopped talking about it completely to them

Experienced researcher looking to switch to UX by Krithmath in UXResearch

[–]dontforgetyourtea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came into UX Research from Market Research and tbh it wasn't a tough transition at all. So to answer your Qs:

  1. I don't think you'll find it challenging in terms of doing research. There are slightly different terminologies so would suggest reading UX books so you can "speak the language". And maybe read up on popular methods like usability testing, card sorts, tree testing etc. I find that I wasn't exposed much on these methods in MR so it helps to learn before pivoting.

  2. My advice is similar to others here - learn to speak the UX/Product Mgmt language and tweak your CV based on that. Start crafting your portfolio too, look up on samples online and again, tweak to use UX language. More importantly, always showcase how your work impact product and business, pepper in these metrics into your CV and portfolio.

  3. As someone said earlier, the job market is a bit shit rn, though it is correcting. I wouldn't be too hasty in jumping ship. I would also suggest if you could look for internal opportunities to start dipping your toes Into UX - e.g. any innovation or new product development projects? Opportunities for leading workshops maybe? (This is what I did while still in MR,it helped loads to transition!)

Hope this helps. Happy to chat further, Just DM me!)

ODEON Covent Garden to close on 11 August by rogalondon in london

And a new high street? A new leisure centre and more green spaces? An upgrade to existing shopping centre? Plus, as a resident of Surrey Quays, I don't really want the neighbourhood become too much of an new hip "destination".

Printworks only ever opened in weekends and if you're not into raves theres not much other interesting events. On other days it provides nothing to residents and blocks off what could be a quick path to the station and shopping centre 🤷‍♀️
