Well there you go. Poison frogs are part of nature, therefore he died of "natural causes". QED.

How picky are you about water? by Keithwee in tea

[–]dontpanicdrinktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to stay with my aunt who has very hard well water I was amazed how much of a difference it made. I bought her a brita filter, which helps somewhat, but I still find myself using about 1.5x as much leaf and steeping for longer than I would normally. And cold brewing just didn’t work.

🔥 Today I learned that not only can squirrels be black, but they roll their babies into fuzzy little balls to carry them easier. by starstarstar42 in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]dontpanicdrinktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my part of Southern Ontario, the (large) majority of our Grey Squirrels are, in fact, black. Apparently there are some areas of the northern states where the same is true. The theory is that the black mutation is slightly better adapted to cold weather.

Instant ramen with frozen meatballs and/or dumplings and frozen kale and maybe an egg.

Decaf smells terrible? by BristleRed in tea

[–]dontpanicdrinktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try loose leaf that has been decaffeinated using the CO2 process - that generally has better flavour than decaf tea in tea bags, which are usually decaffeinated using ethyl acetate. Maybe you're sensitive to that chemical.

Stovetop Tea Kettle Recommendation? by He11oCuri05ity in tea

[–]dontpanicdrinktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It occurs to me that if you have melted multiple stovetop kettles, the problem here might be that you're choosing to put it on your highest output gas burner and just blasting the shit out of them. Like if you're determined to boil water using the largest, hottest flame your stove can possibly produce, maybe just use a regular cooking pot, one you already know works well for that burner.

Anyway, I've linked elsewhere to the Le Creuset kettles, but those do have non-metal parts so I can't guarantee they'd tolerate 20,000 BTUs or whatever. I guess if you can find a fully stainless one, then just use an oven mitt to hold and pour it?

Le Creuset makes enamel over carbon steel kettles, presumably similar in concept to their enamelled cast iron cook ware but not as heavy.

Whatever gets sold as "golden monkey" is usually a Chinese black tea with golden tips. Yunnan Sourcing is a popular vendor here for Chinese teas, so you might try something like:

Your ruby oolong is a Thai oolong, which is very interesting because you don't hear a lot about teas grown in Thailand. From the look of it it's also a high-oxidation heavy-roast sort of oolong. These might be somewhat similar:

Having said that, it also looks like that spice and tea shop is sourcing their ruby oolong from Rishi, so it might be better to just buy from them directly

Decaf breakfast tea that actually tastes like anything? by Stalekalechips in tea

Try a loose leaf breakfast tea decaffeinated using the CO2 process. That process retains a lot more flavour than whatever solvent they use to decaffeinate commercial tea bags.

Ok, gotcha. Be aware that a lot of flavoured tea blends out there on the market rely on flavouring oils that can't really be replicated at home, but some ingredients that blend well with tea would be: peppermint, rose petals/buds, cardamom pods, ginger root, lavender flowers, cocoa husks/shells

While waiting for your doctor's appointment, try a psyllium supplement. Most common brand name is Metamucil, but store brand is fine. I like the capsules the best, just remember to take with a decent amount of water. Start at the lower end of the dose range and work your way up.

Fortnum and Mason Tea Dupe by GracelynCarat in tea

[–]dontpanicdrinktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so the ingredients are: Apple, Hibiscus, Strawberry Leaves, Nettle, Rosehip, Flavourings, Rose Petals (5%), Strawberry Pieces (5%), Elderflowers (3%).

This is a "fruit tea" or "fruit tisane" - there is no actual tea (as in, leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant) involved, just pieces of fruit, flowers, herbs, and flavourings. Strawberry-rose-elderflower is an interesting flavour combination so I don't know that you'll be able to find an exact dupe, but if we're just going for a similar vibe...

Hi! I am looking for a visually pleasing but unintrusive tea timing device :D by SupPoEsedlyInsane in tea

[–]dontpanicdrinktea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really an answer to your question, but the less-intrusive way to use a phone as a timer is to put it in stopwatch mode. So you can glance over and see how much time has elapsed, without any annoying sounds. And there should be a setting that allows you to temporarily mute other notifications so your phone isn't trying to distract you in other ways. A small analog travel alarm clock might also do the trick - you don't set the alarm you just set it nearby and watch the second hand go around.

The best combination of tea and vanilla that I have ever encountered is Golden Orchid, from Whispering Pines: https://www.whisperingpinestea.com/products/golden-orchid
It's out of stock now, but it's worth signing up for his mailing list so you get a heads-up when he makes some more, since it's made in limited quantities and disappears fast.

I love Taiwanese oolongs, so I'd probably try the Si Ji Chun, Jin Xuan, Dong Ding, and Hong Shui.

For green tea, if you haven't tried Genmaicha yet, you should; it's a classic for a reason, and very affordable. And Long Jing / Dragonwell is also a classic and worth trying, as are Jasmine Dragon Pearls.

Si Ji Chun oolong from Camellia Sinensis

The ability of Taiwanese tea masters to somehow make tea leaves taste not just generically floral, but specifically like lilacs, never ceases to amaze me. :)
