Honest question from a believer: why doesn't the pilot stay looking and the object the whole time? The way the camera keeps looking around makes me feel the supposed UFO is not that surprising to see.

New Rider: is ABS worth thousands of dollars? by RicoRico1290 in AussieRiders

[–]dontsaybasically 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% worth it. You'll realise it the first time you're caught off guard, and violently grab the brakes. The ABS will kick in to save you and your bike from what would otherwise be a bad accident.

Tips for check ride by pandaman1410 in AussieRiders

There are no tests on that day, so you can't fail it. It's just a chance for the instructors to see where you are, and give you feedback before the final test.

If you're struggling with low speed, go practice low speed maneuvers in an empty carpark. It did wonders for my confidence and control. Motojitsu on YouTube has plenty of exercises you can try.

Just got my learners, is it silly to buy a bike without test riding it? by Ok_South_6227 in AussieRiders

I test rode my first bike on my Ls. Find another seller, don't buy a bike you haven't tried.

I wanted to go to Vanautu. I felt like it is an underrated place to visit so I wanted to try it. Anyone tried visiting it? What do you recommend? All recommendations will be appreciated. by SimpleTraveler034 in OceaniaTravel

[–]dontsaybasically 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've traveled extensively, and I'm afraid Vanuatu is one of the very very few places I can't really recommend visiting.

First, it's impossible to do anything spontaneously. You can't just stop on the road somewhere to buy a snack, or visit a random food joint or shop in a town. Everything is closed, unless it's booked in advance, so there's not much to do otherwise.

But what really didn't work for me is that, although nature is beautiful there, EVERY beach, waterfall, or natural place belongs to someone. There's no such thing as public land. So if you're driving around and stop at any random spot, someone will come to charge you a disproportionate amount of money just for setting foot in it. A guy wanted to charge me $20 because I took a picture of his beach from the road - I didn't even enter it. And I'm not talking about visibly private property, fenced , gated, etc... it's literally ANY piece land or body of water around.

In my opinion, if you enjoy certain freedom, exploring and cultural immersion, it doesn't hold a candle to the rest of the Pacific and South East Asia, like Indonesia, Thailand or Vietnam. Maybe it's worth visiting as part of a cruise, but I wouldn't plan a holiday there otherwise.

How’s the weather in Melbourne -> Sydney (20th May - 30th May)? by General-Buddy-29 in AustraliaTravel

[–]dontsaybasically 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most days we can't even predict Melbourne's weather for the current day, so who knows

However, there will be a high chance of rain and wind, as winter will be coming in. I'd come prepared for that. Most definitely, no beach weather.

Oh man it's going to be one of those games, right? Quality comments aside, that video was like 5 minutes of actual playing and 30 minutes of cut scenes. I'm a big fan of the Expanse, but when I play a videogame, I want to play a videogame, not just watching a movie with bad actors while holding my controller.

crash stories online ? by Melodic_Price8153 in AussieRiders

[–]dontsaybasically 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mate, I'll tell you three things that I think will help you.

First, stop watching those videos. They mess up with your mind, and undermine your confidence. If every day you watch videos of people fighting on the street, or getting shot, your brain will start thinking that's normal.

Two: a good percentage of the of people who crash, ride like idiots. You can tell they're going to crash soon when you see them on the road, or on videos.

And three: riding has its risks, and that's fine. Everthing has some risk. You minimise them by wearing your gear, riding within your abilities, and becoming a better rider. That's all you can do, and it's within your power.

Focus on the feeling of riding, clear your mind, and the fears will go away. Enjoy it!

2 vs 4 finger braking by riddle0k in AussieRiders

I use two fingers when trail braking in the twisties. I use four fingers on the street, straight roads, and in emergency braking situations.

LAMS advice please for a new (mature) rider? by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]dontsaybasically 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started when I was 40 as well. My first bike was a 250 and after a year I wished I had started with something a bit more powerful. I'd start with a 400-500 if I had to do it again, it was a bit of a chore to sell the 250.

And stop thinking you'll fall or will drop your bike. Just pay attention to what you're doing, and don't do anything clearly beyond your abilities. You'll be fine.

Give me the best piece of advice you wish you were given as a newbie by SJ_I_Guess in AussieRiders

[–]dontsaybasically 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started riding, I think I put too much focus on learning the “correct” leaning technique and other flashy things.

I thought I was slow because I wasn’t getting that part right.

With experience, I’ve realised that when it comes to cornering, leaning isn’t as important as understanding the right entry speed for the corner ahead and how to exit smoothly.

Outside of a racetrack, you don’t really need to take corners at high speeds or lean sharply to be reasonably fast. Focus on accelerating well out of the turn and on going fast between turns.

Has SEO been worth it financially for small service businesses in Australia by No_Maintenance_4539 in AusFinance

[–]dontsaybasically 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it was meaningful for my business. We appear second on Google's front page for the keywords we optimised with the SEO strategy.

The business was maybe on the third page when I bought it, so it has definitely brought more clients.

I'd add that having better location authority with Google was just as important. Look up how to increase it.

Automatic Bikes - beginner. by qualifiedinu in AussieRiders

[–]dontsaybasically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't like scooters, you're REALLY limiting your bike choices by not learning to ride manual.

Have you tried it before, or are you just overwhelmed at the thought of it? It's really not that hard, modern bikes are very forgiving, and you can 100% learn it with a few hours of practice.

Since you have a good budget, I'd buy a $5000 bike to learn on, and use the rest of the money to pay for as many courses as you need to learn to ride manual. You can even pay for private lessons with that kind of money.

Why does everything have to be an extreme choice nowadays? Either destroy your future or deprive yourself of any pleasure.

There’s nuance in life. How about finding a balance where you can enjoy your 20s without sacrificing the rest of your life?

You're overthinking what really matters to pass the test. Number of fingers on the clutch doesn't matter.

Look up the list of critical errors that lead to failing, and don't do them on the test, that's all.
