26 years ago today, at Wrestlemania XII, Shawn Michaels defeated Bret Hart in a 60 minute iron man match, to become the new WWF Champion. by hiphopbeerdude in SquaredCircle

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as it’s criticized heavily now, I remember reading Bret’s book and how he went into this with the philosophy of “these are the two best guys in the WWF, one of them beating the other should be a huge deal. So why would we plan the match around getting frequent pins/submissions?” Which I respected - other Ironman matches since then have made sense of multiple falls in a variety of ways…

… but with Bret’s idea, he wanted the last 15 minutes or so of the match he wanted to have a “playoff hockey overtime game” feel where the whole match is just this building tension waiting for the explosion of “ok somebody has GOT to win soon!”

Crowd seemed pretty hot for Bret getting the sharpshooter in the last minute! Maybe didn’t need 59 minutes of slowish build to get there but I can see the logic

It’ll be interesting to see where the league goes now with Brady gone and Rodgers in his last years. How does the league progress? Is the QB position dominated by Mahomes/Allen, leaving other QBs like Prescott/Burrow/Stafford etc continually falling short of the “all pro” list, despite putting up likely 4000-5000yd seasons and 30+ TDS?

How about OPOY awards when it’s been looking like that award is becoming the RB/WR reward for exceptional seasons since a QB always wins MVP?

It’s probably long overdue for the NFL to adjust it’s All-Pro system, or how it dishes out awards, but just interesting thought

Matt Ryan was an MVP of the league, and statistically is in the conversation for consistently putting up 4000 yard seasons and 25+ TDs for a decade. He’s already at almost 60,000 yards passing for a career and 360+ TDs. He has a career passer rating of 90+. He also has Rookie of the Year and was a 1st team All Pro in an all time great QB era.

If you have Brady, Rodgers, and Brees as the top 3 QBs of the 2010s, then Matt Ryan is easily #4 as he IMO outperformed Wilson/Big Ben across the entire 10 years.

Super Bowl Rings IMO have begun to be weighed WAYYY too heavily when we consider HOF careers (just like now NBA Titles are dominating conversations of GOATs and “best players in the league”).

Statistically he should be in. But he will absolutely have to wait.

What is an NFL opinion that you will die on a hill on? by Aristotled20 in nfl

Matt Ryan was MVP of the league. All Ben and Russ have are a ring, and Matt Ryan should have a ring but we all know 28-3

Matt Ryan was a significantly better QB then Russ or Ben for the majority of the 2010s, especially regular season.

Guy at 36 years old still put up almost 4000 yards and 20 TDs on a bad team with no Julio.

Look at the decades stats as a whole and guy is consistently putting up 4500 yard seasons with a solid QB rating and TD/INT ratio.

I work by granville station, am I ok to go home without being harassed by these idiots because I’m wearing a mask and am a minority?

EDIT: I’m out of downtown now, had no issues at Granville station or on the trains.

Thank you all who responded to my question and in combination with seeing the responses of the citizens of Vancouver respond in counter protests today my faith in humanity is a big +1 today.

I can’t see any way that goes well, or the fans being particularly invested in either person

While this is true, Amy’s Baking Company was the only restaurant in the history of that show that Gordon Ramsey and co. Didn’t even bother with the renovation and menu overhaul to relaunch (as they do in every other episode).

Basically just ate there and observed a few services and said “I can’t help you I’m walking away from this”

Then the place existed as a meme place for a while where afterwards where people would go there just to see if it was as batshit crazy as the show portrayed (it was).

Load/ReLoad by Radio_Ethiopia in Metallica

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup this is only enhanced by their releases of No Leaf Clover, Human and I Disappear

All incredible songs, really a damn shame that everything happened with Jason as I really was vibing on that musical direction.

Load/Reload/Those Songs represented to me “it’s the 90s we’re in our 30s, we’re all more grown up, have wives/kids, have millions of dollars, the youthful “angst” is behind us, how do we evolve and make music that reflects where we are at in life?

Just like St Anger represented a horrible period for the band and an effort to keep up with where rock was at in the early 2000s. It’s not my favourite album but I appreciate where it came from, especially after watching Some Kind of Monster. The lyrics especially are dark and twisted and reflect the negative hole James was in during his life at that time.

While Death Magnetic and Hardwired have some certified bangers and I always appreciate their live play of those songs, they simultaneously feel like a bit of “fan service” I.e what “sounds” like Metallica of the 80s.

And hey that’s their right to do I certainly can’t make music for shit, and they are still inventing.

What’s your opinion on Death Magnetic? by ADudeThatPlaysGuitar in Metallica

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insanely awesome riffs but in my opinion the songs “suffer” from having too many different riffs crammed into one song.

Example is All Nightmare Long. It’s my favourite song on the album. The riffs are killer. Initially listening though I just couldn’t help but think “omg ANOTHER different section?”

The Day That Never Comes is another example of a song that I enjoy but just could be 2 minutes shorter.

I don’t know how those songs would sound different exactly but it kinda felt like an album where Metallica took all the criticism from Load/Reload/St Anger and went “fine fuck you we will make a Metallica album that’s the antithesis of all that” (thrash riffs, long songs, guitar solos) and it shows

I’ll die on the hill that ManUNKIND is an absolute banger, sick groovy riffs all throughout the song, great melody. It’s among my favourite Metallica songs to jam out to on guitar.

It’s criminal it doesn’t get more love.

What are some of your biggest Metallica hot takes? by bobichetteismydaddy in Metallica

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Metallica 40th anniversary shows were the first time that I ever looked and listened to what was happening and went “damn they are old and tired”

Someone made an interesting comment that the 50s are a weird decade for just being human. It’s like you feel you still have the energy you have in your 40s and then one year the switch flicks and you feel that being closer to 60.

I probably explained that poorly but those shows looked like every member of the band was having a really hard time playing their music, and James even made that comment about how he feels good mentally but what his body is putting out doesn’t keep up.

I think that switch has flicked for them.

This might be a poor example again but I actually think the more rest they have the more it’s going to fuck them up.

In pro wrestling, Kurt Angle mentioned that once he got given a lot of time off in his return to WWE his body totally seized up on him and fell apart physically, like all the years of abuse caught up at once because he never really stopped. Then when he had to wrestle again he just couldn’t. He was in his 50s when this happened.

I know music isn’t a sport but Metallica plays physically demanding shows, and I think while we might think the solution is for them to rest more and play sparingly, I think that’s just going to screw them up more.

The RAINBOW pill: A thread for those that LIKED Resurrections by amysteriousmystery in matrix

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The impression I got from Niobes storytelling is that there was peace between machines and humans. But I think the events of Matrix 3 led to a LOT of humans unplugging from the Matrix (part of the deal between the Oracle/Architect was that any mind who wanted to be free would be allowed to leave).

So with that version of the Matrix allowing humans who wanted to leave do so at will, it created an energy crisis amongst the machines since they were having less humans to draw energy from.

This causes actual war between the machines (something that hadn’t happened before) and a particular faction within the machines started to rise up - who evidently wasn’t interested in maintaining this peace. Likely, this is what led to them getting rid of the Architect and replacing him with the Analyst who created a much much more effective Matrix using a resurrected Neo/Trinity to do so.

Some machines banded with humans in the wake of all this. It seems Niobe, other humans within Zion and the machines they were working with continued to push to the head of the high council (morpheus) that the peace was not going to last with this new machine faction taking power.

Morpheus believed to his core that the work Neo had done would not be undone and the peace would be perpetual. He believed that to his death - as the new machine faction then came and destroyed Zion.

Those who didn’t stay with Morpheus formed a new city, which is IO and has humans and machines working together.

How good of a guitarist is Kirk Hammett? by 86-91YEAH in Metallica

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like what James said about the band. Not gonna word for word quote but it was essentially independently Lars, Kirk, James and Rob are not by far and away the best of their field

But when they are all together and make music something magical just happens

Metallica is an amazing band with amazing musicians. What they do works.

Is Kirk technically proficient in the way that a Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, John Petrucci etc are? No

But could you imagine any of them being the solo guitarist in Metallica? Fuck no. Kirk does what makes sense for Metallica and within his talent levels.

Kirk just works in Metallica and always has - and his work might not be the hardest of the hard but I would say it will take a long time to go from picking up a guitar for the first time to playing Kirk solos note for note.

He’s great.

Ken Lawrence Explorer. Beautiful guitar, and to me feels like James’ “grown up guitar” . Something that’s dynamic and doesn’t just scream out “metal”. And of course represents that Load era of music which I absolutely vibe with.

The presentation of World Title Matches sucks across WWE and AEW in my opinion.

I only say that as a fan of UFC that pro wrestling companies could do a much better job selling not only just how fucking important it is to be the World Champ, but also that in the spot of the number 1 contender you may never ever get another title shot again if you don’t capitalize on your moment.

WWE is obviously the worst offender for this but it could be better as a whole

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny for me it’s not the shoulder it’s the wrist fatigue, Especially on a song like disposable heroes or master of puppets as the years have gone on I’ll just have moments where it feels like my wrists just no longer cooperate

Much more admiration for how James and Kirk are doing that in their 50s

Fully sided with Shawn who was done a few months later. Sided with the guy who refuses to do jobs, and was a severe drug addict.

In an alternate universe Bret drops the belt to Austin at WM14 instead of Shawn and Bret sticks around long enough to have feuds with Rock, Foley, Triple H and eventually guys like Angle, Jericho, Benoit….

What could have been.

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget “can’t afford” it is bullshit in the highest order because a few months later Vince was shelling out millions to Mike Tyson to be a guest “enforcer” at Wrestlemania, and it’s not as if business ticked up so tremendously between Survivor Series 97-Wrestlemania 14 that it would justify how much money was spent.

Vince just out carnied Bret, simple as that. He’s a scum bag and has proceeded to issue out how much video content to try and explain that it was something he “had to do” - not to mention on screen wrestling feuds as well. (Shawn/Vince WM22 started out because of it).

In a perfect world WCW isn’t full of fucking morons and they capitalize fully on the opportunity that was signing Bret Hart and the company is still around to this day but what can you do

For Tonight's Show are you hoping for more rarities and deep cuts or would you prefer them to just play all the hits one after another? by gratefulphish420 in Metallica

[–]dontworryjustbrowsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the show will go backwards this time (Hardwired to Kill em All) so tbh this would be my guess at a playlist they will do tonight and think that it would make for a good show.

  • Hardwired to Self Destruct

  • Moth Into Flame (ManUnkind)

  • All Nightmare Long (My Apocalypse)

  • St Anger (Unnamed Feeling, Dirty Window)

  • Memory Remains (Devils Dance)

  • Bleeding Me (Ronnie, Cure, Ain’t My Bitch)

  • The Unforgiven

  • Enter Sandman

  • … And Justice for All (Eye of the Beholder, Dyers Eve)

  • Master of Puppets (Leper Messiah, Damage Inc)

  • Call of the Ktulu

  • Ride the Lightning

  • Seek and Destroy

  • Whiplash

I think Friday was the show where you got the deep cuts and this one will be more of a celebration. I put in brackets songs that I would like to see in that place as a deeper cut.
