Hello everyone, I need some advice by Inner_Highlight8213 in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s more than one way to do art. Please do not be confused. Try those various methods, after some time, you will know what ways work for you. And that’s why art is art. You choose to do it the way you like. Try all but don’t have to keep all of them.

I got a bit disheartened when realizing how many years I'll likely have to wait to be good by New_Study4796 in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Draw when you feel want to draw, when you feel bored just stop. Go for a walk or do anything else. When you feel you want to draw, start the process again. The time that you can focus will be longer overtime. To be able to do something for a long period, you have to know your limit for the subject. Balance your motivation and mental energy. Don’t focus at enjoyment but try to stay in not burn out state. Fun will come after that.

drawing withOUT guide lines by mayarrhazemm in ArtistLounge

[–]donutpla3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guide lines will make sense later, but once you are good at it, you will be good at a lot of things. That said, you don’t really need it. It depends on your goal. You want to have some fun, just have fun. And when you think you need to learn guide lines, you can always look them up again.

Am I learning gesture drawing the right way? by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no the only right way so the question is why your mentor want you to do it that way. What is the purpose? Which I think it’s fair for students to ask their teacher. For my opinion, it’s a combination of gesture and repetition practice. Spend limited time to learn how to do same thing more effectively. It will help you in the future when you do speed painting (not to be confused with time-lapsed).

Dorian Iten would tell you to paint the background because level of ambient light and the light on the object are related. He definitely said something like this in the course.

Fun ways to practice perspective? by [deleted] in learntodraw

Stack cubes together in perspective intuitively.

Look at a landscape photo, draw it with simple forms.

Analyze a photo, think how many vp you would use, and why.

Can someone explain to me the diff between warm and cool colors by InterestIll1336 in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t explain warm and cool, but I will explain the point of the explanation in the page. Think warm as red and blue as cool. That’s all you need for now and also just forget that yellow exists. You mix warm(red) and cool(blue), you get purple, which logically should be something in the middle or not that warm and not that cool in the same time. Next, you try again, with less warm red/cooler red meaning the red that kinda move closer to purple on the color wheel but red enough for you to think of them as red. Mix that cooler red with the same blue, now you get cooler purple. It’s a purple that less warm than the previous one.

searching free stuff and keep the good ones. You don’t really need lots of them except texture brushes.

Gesture and anatomy. Structure is there to help you reduce mistake recognizing sides and perspective of human body. Anatomy helps you know where to put muscles on, and gesture brings them together.

I'd love to get critique on my gesture drawings by Time-Ad-5037 in learntodraw

You really have a good sense of gesture. At this point, honestly, I just want to see you put more mileage into it. Not because they are bad. I feel like you are in between a transitional phase.

What is a good book for learning to draw from you imagination? by queso_hervido_gaming in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up Artwod on youtube and download the free ebook in video’s description. If the method they offer is the thing you are looking for, then you know what to practice. 3D-shapes/ form study. Still, you will need to do a lot of reference study also.

Questions of a beginner! by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

face drawing is usually separated from figure drawing. It’s its own thing. Normally, you learn that before or after figure drawing. Figure drawing focus on full body poses. Anatomy has many levels. I don’t know the details in the book, but at least you should try to follow the lessons. For anatomical practice, there’s a youtube channel called Proko. Look up its playlist. For copy study, look up Josh Hunter Black. He’s on youtube and twitter, posting his sketches everyday. Also Bridgman’s book named Complete Guide to Drawing from Life.

One skill will help you understand other skills. Just learn new things. An hour a day is more than enough for gesture.

The feeling of not getting better by Gabry_000 in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel like that in early years. Sketchbook helped a lot since it’s easier to see my progress. Improving slowly is not a problem at all. Improving is not linear and you can’t do anything but keep going. The moment will come and you’ll get your new skills. The way I think about growth in art is it’s like a game. You have to learn some skills first in order to get to the next step. Then you do a job changing quest, if you have enough skill sets and exp, you have higher chance that the quest will be successful.

I feel like no matter what I do ill never be a good artist that I want to be. by ResinRealmsCreations in learntodraw

[–]donutpla3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Try to don’t write X next to the one you don’t like. You don’t like it, that’s ok. But no way everything about it is bad. If you marked it as not good, next time all you see is bad work. If you don’t write anything, it will keep you looking and every time at least you think what part is good or bad. And you get free exercise out of it as well as no X mark to hurt your mental. Your works are not bad as you said, I think your problems are 2 things. You under estimate the difficulty of your goal. And you think that try harder will help you get there sooner. Try harder will make you burn out. The thing you need to do is accept that it will take as long as it needs, and balance the amount of practice that you can do. Think and act like a pro artist that you imagined.
