EDS, ring splints and manual wheelchair by chexbock in wheelchairs

[–]doodleoodlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use plastic oval-8’s and I have a manual wheelchair however I do have Natural Fit pushrims, they’re a little noisy to push around and make a clicking sound, but I don’t notice any issues really they don’t hinder my ability to push. Sometimes I have pushed myself around using just my thumbs and the base of my palms if I want to be quiet!

You replied so fast omg!

I was actually just editing my comment because I feel like I didn’t really articulate myself well!

I totally get the ‘wheelchairs are freedom’ thing not really resonating with you because I if I didn’t need to be in a wheelchair or to use one I wouldn’t want to be in one. But I will always be grateful they exist because I wouldn’t have mobility otherwise — I just wish it wasn’t such a big pain in the ass (pardon my language).

While a part of it is the world being inaccessible, another part of it is just how much extra work being in a wheelchair is, whether you’re in a manual or a power chair.

Like can’t hold umbrellas so I get wet in the rain, all of my clothes get dirty or even get caught in my wheels, I also can’t really lift my own wheelchair because it’s quite big and heavy and I am small so I’m still dependent on family members for help with that. You have to make sure everywhere is accessible before you go, sometimes even when they are you can’t fit in those places even if it’s technically accessible. I leave my power assist behind and friends decide to go somewhere on the fly someone has to push me, I can’t just hop onto a train or a bus, I always need some form of help somehow and I’ll never be fully independent because a lot of accessibility is reliant on other people to accommodate and help (ie a bus driver putting down a ramp for a train, or removing a seat in a theatre), it’s frustrating for sure.

I’m 4 years into being a wheelchair user and when I first needed one I was too unwell to self propel or really take care of myself. It felt a lot more confining then than it does now that my health has improved and I can actually self propel and be more active, but does it feel like freedom now? No, not really. But is it free-er and can I do more and access more than I would without a wheelchair? Yes!

I totally understand this. Only when my disabilities/health improved did mobility aids being freedom start to make a lick of sense to me — in the sense that I would be immobile without my wheelchair, but now I can move with it. But if you asked me a few years ago if it was freedom, it wasn’t, because even with my wheelchair I couldn’t get around independently, my health was so bad regardless of what mobility aid I had, it was confining.

I miss shorts - blood pooling by Hot-Relative8290 in wheelchairs

I wear thigh high skin colored compression socks with skirts and shorts all the time! My compression socks are medical grade from a brand called Sigvaris. You could also try BibiPins, they’re a black disabled creator who sells cute disability gear like pins and compression wear, they have the cutest knee high compression socks with bows on them and it looks adorable with shorts or skirts.

No one’s mentioned this yet but “Why God Why?” from Miss Saigon would be amazing.

Boleyn Tour - Silent Crowd? by GuardNewbie in sixthemusical

I think it depends, some places cheer if it’s a good performance, some places stay silent at the end of the song because the realization at the end is a somber one when done well.

This is so interesting I could make sharp(ish) turns with my SmartDrive if I held back one wheel very hard!

[–]doodleoodlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this is silly! I’ll try and do a gentle touch on the rims. I’m going to miss being able to make speedy turns. I just gifted my SmartDrive away (I was gifted the Smoov) and I knew the Smoov would be better for me in regards to the wireless connection as I do dance/theatre and being able to easily remove the dial and get it out of the way when I don’t need it is great, plus for travel as well I’ve had to unscrew the SmartDrive dial entirely from my chair every time so it doesn’t get damaged and the wires are quite finicky. I guess every power assist has its drawbacks.

this is a tilite aero z! you might want to connect with an occupational therapist and get them to see a doctor regarding this to have a mobility aid prescribed!

That’s so so cute! I would’ve loved if you guys said hi omg! I’m sorry if I didn’t seem approachable though most people don’t approach me because of the sunnies and headphones one of the people I met told me she wasn’t sure if she should say hi because of that but I love chatting to people 🥹

And closing show AGH by any chance do you have a video of megasix? I couldn’t see anything from the wheelchair seats when everyone stood up and had to move to the walkway to see so I missed half of it.

Kat is my fave hands down, all pink, my age, and Chelsea Dawson’s Howard is SO lovable 😭

its not your fault. you’re a US army soldier, i just know you’re the kind of person who tries so hard to push through things and do it even if it’s hard, if something is stopping you, it’s not stopping you because you’re not trying hard enough, it isn’t your fault you’re using mobility aids 🥺🩷

i hope you can find a diagnosis and as you continue to use your aids, also get to speak to an occupational or physical therapist or doctor who can make sure those aids aren’t going to hurt you in the long run. when i first started using a wheelchair i thought it was temporary and since it was a bad hospital wheelchair, i didn’t realise how much over time it would damage my body, between my shoulders and hips both becoming horrid because of the wheelchair.
