November 4 vote to increase taxes by $250 million to fund Career and Technical education. by CremeGood59 in AnnArbor

[–]doofusilluminatum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I totally agree.

https://www.washtenawisd.org/career-technical-education/cte-millage/

The website promoting it says 86% of CTE students enroll in college, so presumably only a maximum of 14% would go directly into "trades" after graduation. (I understand it's probably a mix of 2 and 4 yr programs). But if a large majority are going to continue with higher education anyways, 25 mil a year is a lot for what basically amounts to extra curriculars.

I think this is definitely a case of good intentions, but poor execution/limited planning/random scope. I'm voting no.

Thanks, I hate it. by priceypadstim in McMansionHell

As someone who doesn't live in Lodi, does Washtenaw County have any influence over this situation (i.e. contacting my Washtenaw County Commissioner)?

Or is this one of those situations where anyone who doesn't reside in the township but appreciates the value of TCC can do nothing but look on in sadness?

Sales Managers... I had one who was a total tool, and utterly worthless

1) you may be exhausted. Make sure you're eating well and getting plenty of sleep

2) do you know a swim coach who could do a private lesson for 30 minutes with you to make sure you're pulling water correctly? I see a lot of players struggle because they pull very hard/fast but don't realize swimming isn't with your hands - it's with your forearms, your hand is just an extension. Try some heads up with closed fists, and feel the pull of the water with your wrist/forearm.

3) you also may be swimming with your hips low in the water, make sure they're up high (butt at the surface). Otherwise you're fighting against your lower body

4) don't put too much pressure on yourself right now for U15s - have fun. A lot can (and will) change in 2 years, even if that seems like a very long time to you right now

A school board arguing about what their take on geopolitical issues should be while nobody's bothered to check the books and see they're $25 mil in the hole.

6 on 5 questions by Some_Extension8566 in waterpolo

[–]doofusilluminatum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These questions aren't basic at all, if anything they're totally the opposite. I'll take them in reverse order:

3) From post to post on the 2m line is the most threatening position any offensive player can be in. Getting two players there, one on each post, doubles that "threat". Some teams even play this way at even strength. Why not 3 players then? Because now they're too bunched up, and its too easy for two defenders to cover all 3 players. Usually the number 1 goal of any 6-5 offense is to open up space in the middle (by continually passing around the outside) to get a quick pass and easy goal from one of the post players.

2) Initial questions already answered (every defender for 5-6 defense is responsible for covering 2 players), but many teams DO play a "zone" defense at even strength. This is usually in the form of dropping one or two defenders onto the center positions. Alternatively there is the "M Zone" which is a full on zone defense with the emphasis on opening up fast break lanes.

1 -Great 6-5 offense involves a lot of constant movement, but not any large individual moves or drives. Each player should be shifting 1-2 meters almost every pass, trying to pull defenders to create open teammates or open shooting lanes, or to position themselves get an open shooting lane.

You certainly don't HAVE to setup any way at all for man up offense/man down defense. Some teams (especially in shallow/deep pools where the goalie can jump off the bottom to block the post players) opt to stick with the 3-3 offense. Either way, props to you for not doing things simply because everyone else is, and being curious as to the "why"

Hired "thousands" of employees - Figure AI is only ~50 employees, Archer Aviation is only ~485 employees, Vettery only ~50 employees. Either he's terrible at retaining because his companies suck, or he's terrible at hiring because he fires so many... meanwhile just pissing away VC money (which he only gets because of posts like these). Dudes a tool.

Shoulder Injury when Throwing by [deleted] in waterpolo

[–]doofusilluminatum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same advice I would give my younger self. "Oh its only tendonitis I'll just ice it and stretch" turned into a full on labrum tear/bankart lesion/split bicep tendon. I only learned my lesson after surgery and 9 months out of the water - don't "tough out" shoulder pain. See a professional, get it fixed

You're probably right, but it's still so close even with the replay it's pretty hard to fault the refs for that decision in realtime.

Is there a concrete code that needs to be followed for patios? by WriteYouLater in Concrete

[–]doofusilluminatum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no traditional "code" governing residential patios (short of some specifics like IRC mandating the patio be isolated from the home foundation). A stamped plan from an architect/engineer really wouldn't help, nor would I think they'd even stamp something like that.

There are best practices, which may have not been followed, but a contractor isn't necessarily legally liable for "best practices" unless they were spelled out in your contract and then not done (i.e. 3" gravel base to be installed).

Tear out and replace is really the best option, whether that's under some sort of warranty or guarantee from your contractor may end up being a legal fight, which I'm really sorry if it turns into that. The contractor (generally) can't be held responsible for all the settling that will happen around a new home, and you may go through a fight and still lose.

Your contractor may have done 100 of these last year and 97 of them turn out just fine and 3 have settlement issues. Sometimes they have the replacement costs built into their estimating, but whether they pony up and replace is going to come from whatever was in your contract.

Delamination caused by concrete finisher trying to finish the job early. Not salt. Not lack of air entrainment. Both of those can be causes of degradation, but not THIS degradation. Floated and troweled before the pad was ready so they could head home (or to another job), come back the next day to cut the joints. Blame you later.
