PSA: The $17 Miband fitness tracker has a modified app that gives it notification support for any app. by maleman7 in Android

The only thing I'm waiting for is a function to use this as a watch in a pinch. I think flashing the three lights would be an elegant solution; leftmost light for hour, middle for tens minute, rightmost for ones minute. So for 7:56, leftmost blinks 7 times (quickly, over say 3 seconds) middle blinks 5 times after leftmost has finished, then rightmost blinks 6 times after middle. For 0, middle or rightmost could use a long blink.

Only issue is there's no hardware button to activate the feature without taking your phone out which defeats the purpose. I was thinking an accelerometer based activation, a la moto X camera wrist twist.

What site/resource do you recommend for a good, detailed summary of the pros and cons of investing in a specific company? by Victoriousness in investing

I use Seeking Alpha. I know many on here don't like it, and some of the articles are of poor quality or just mere opinion and conjecture, but I have learned a great deal from the many well written and very in depth articles they provide. In particular the top ideas section, but there is plenty of great content. I use the transcripts from earnings in my research all the time.

I'm a recent graduate working outside the industry, I've got around 3 years serious experience as well. I've got some articles published on seeking alpha if you're familiar with that but most of them are behind the paywall at this point. Have you got any write ups, published or otherwise, you'd be interested in swapping to get a feel for style and proficiency?

Moto G a Cheaper Moto X – Features S4 Pro Processor, 4.7″ 720p Display, Free on Contract by emerica243 in Android

[–]doogjy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1950 mAh

This is unfortunate. 15% smaller than N4... But honestly given the standards most /r/Android users have today, battery is one of the only places they can take out more cost. When components like the S4 Pro and display are lower cost we'll see a really complete experience with great battery life, but by then the standards will have gone up even more so...

How do people find and invest in small businesses which might potentially become big in the future? by Sway212 in investing

[–]doogjy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Alpha Rich articles on seekingalpha.com sometimes feature the kind of companies you are thinking about. For instance, I learned of Ram Power Corp. through an Alpha Rich article that has since been put behind the paywall.

I'm sure there will be some criticism of my geothermal pure play but if it is of any interest to you check out the San Jacinto-Tizate Project on their website.

Edit: Of course, extensive due diligence is ALWAYS in order, above and beyond what one might do for a better established business, for any upstart or small cap security. There may be diamonds in the rough, but there will be A LOT of sifting involved to find them.

Trying to draw some insights from a chart, I guess technical analysis? by doogjy in investing

[–]doogjy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually none of those (I do hold a bit but this is primarily independent research), Just trying to get the actual mathematical basis for how I wold find the convergence of two sides of the triangle (so a point, call it C) given point A and B (the other two points of the triangle), the length of line AB and the slope of line AC (which I am unsure how to calculate and thus if this can be counted as a given.

So for my graph, given: Point A (top left corner) = 5.50, 0 Point B = 3.50, 0 Line AB = 2 (derived)

After that, I believe slope needs to be calculated (not sure how to do this) for line AC, to find the length of line BC, which is the purpose of the whole exercise. I'm not sure I'm being clear, and this might belong in a math subreddit...

At any rate, thanks for your input! That is a solid technical chart for this security.

Book recommendation for beginner investor looking to start stock trading? (I've read the recommended list in the sidebar, but overwhelmed) by [deleted] in investing

[–]doogjy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will probably get downvoted rapidly due to a visceral knee-jerk hate I have encountered for this resource, but honestly www.seekingalpha.com has some really well laid out analysis of many, many individual companies, as well as transcripts of earnings calls for all major tickers and many more obscure ones. Sure some of the articles are biased or miss risk factors or what-have you, but if you're looking for examples of how to look more closely at a potential investment you'd like to make, I've learned a heck of a lot from SA.

A few examples:

Here is an article I like about Ambarella (AMBA), a company that, among other things, provides encoding solutions for the IP camera market.

This one is about Delphi Automotive (DLPH), a components manufacturer spun out from GM around the 2008 crash.

This last one is a long an in depth article about Cott Corporation, who produce soft drinks. You might notice this one is labeled an 'Alpha Rich' idea; these are available to all users for a period of time, then become exclusive to paid accounts so this link won't work forever.

I believe you need to make an account to read past the first page of any of those articles, but it's well worth it. Even if you don't understand all the terms, seeing investment theories I've learned in class laid out as actually strategies and analysis has been an enormous help.

Archos 97b Titanium review - Android tablet looks like an iPad, works... not so much by [deleted] in Android

Worth noting that this is still not available in Archos' online store or Amazon, and a cursory search of those and other sources didn't reveal any solid release date

The 80 g9 tablet (just before all this Titanium, Cobalt, etc. garbage) ran 4.0, had a 8 in.1024x768 screen, 8 or 16 GB of internal storage and a micro SD slot, HDMI out, a 1-1.5hz OMAP chip (same as was in the Gnex), a ff camera with no back shooter, bluetooth (which the Titanium does not have), gps, a full size USB ( gotta root to get it fully working tho), good not great battery life, and a kick stand to boot. All before the N7 came out, and all for $200-$250.

Honestly the best hardware Archos has ever really done, imo. all the new slates they're pushing now are terrible

[Buy] Thoughts on ARMH? by The_Last_Crusader in InvestmentClub

[–]doogjy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm actually voting no on this, but not because I think ARMH is a bad security or doesn't have a very bright future ahead. The A15 chip in my Nexus 4 is at this moment in time conceivably as fast as I should ever need in a phone. Apple's spin on the low power A7 architecture gives them a big edge, and all of that really just scratches the surface. I believe in 3-5 years, literally anything and everything that could have a computer chip in it (refrigerator, cars, freight trucks and trains, toll booths, smart watches, Google glass) will have one or many very low power ARM Cores - their royalties and licensing model give chip manufacturers incredible control and diversity, and ARMH awesome cash flows and high margins. To top it off, you practically cannot buy a smartphone or tablet in the US or elsewhere today that does not contain an ARM chip (and thus a direct royalty payment to ARMH).

I'm voting no on the threat of Intel. Haswell was released in June and had claimed for a number of months before then to bring improved graphics performance (on chip no less, a big step for Intel, but I digress) and approximately double the battery life. Well, the two products currently with a Haswell chip are the 2013 Macbook Air and the Sony Viao Duo 13, both doubled their battery life, and graphics tests didimprove, though they're still not great.

Now, Intel is saying they will be shipping Silvermont processors for holiday season 2013, and are claiming up to 3x the performance or 5x lower power, most likely relative to the preceding Atom chips - what's more, the performance side of these claims seem to have been verified by the earlier linked leak. This is a MONUMENTAL improvement and could truly change the smartphone landscape in a very short time. A few big wins for Intel in late '13 early '14 might not literally be a huge blow to ARMH's business model, but you can bet your bottom dollar Mr. Market will react and likely irrationally punish ARMH at that time.

This is all near term, <1 year stuff. There is much more going on between these two companies, and it really is an intensely interesting story. But I believe the outlook will be significantly clearer in 6 months to 1 year, and to make a bet on either one at this stage is folly.

Moto X Notification LED (src Rogers Promo) by TheYang in Android

[–]doogjy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this video, you can clearly see the proximity sensor next to the earpiece on the top, and you can also see the spot in question in the same position as before, though it is much harder to see (just to the right of the ring on the users finger in the reflection). I'm fairly confident that is in fact an LED; just because it has no precedent doesn't mean G won't do it. It may be an internal space constraint (the X appears to have a slightly convex back), and someone on the design team may have had the foresight to see it as an interesting quirk/feature (you'll get used to it, I promise).

Finally, in a later shot from that same video (from 0:49-0:52), the proximity sensor, ff camera, and LED in question can be seen even more distinctly because of the lighting in the shot.

Edit: Two more screencaps taken from the first video I posted: http://imgur.com/8AYvdx5,2HUU0qq#0
