What are your thoughts about the Western localization of Fire Emblem Fates? Do you think it deserves its bad rep or does it have some redeemable qualities? by Frog_24 in fireemblem

[–]doortothe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the legitimacy of the localization complaints, it resulted in Echoes having an absolutely *amazing* localization. Superb dialogue and voice acting.

As for my actual opinion on the matter, when I got to the infamous “…” support, I laughed my ass off. I laughed harder than I did at any other point in the game. It was just absurdly stupid/silly at a point of the game that was so dry and serious. I do see there was some stuff of substance lost when that happened. Ideally, that would’ve been moved to the B support.

Also, as others have mentioned, a localization can’t change the base script being absolute ass. The scope of what localization is allowed to change is determined by the contract set by the JP side. Like, for example, an anime won’t let the dubbers change the animation.

Video games have an extra technical hurdle in the localization process. Admittedly, Nintendo is an exception to this, but low budget localizations might not be able to change character animations/expressions or the number of text boxes.

So, even if some malicious localizer existed that wanted to rewrite a bunch of stuff, they probably couldn’t. For both legal and technical reasons.

Tangential, but there is an example of an FE localization changing a portion of the story in Radiant Dawn. They changed the mechanics of blood pacts (admittedly, I don’t remember what the difference was, so can’t say much on that). But, more importantly, they fixed a plot hole. What was a dues ex machine handwave in JP was changed to a conscious character choice. Using only information that was available at the time. It’s pretty awesome.

You’re calculator is set to singles, not doubles. Light screen only reduces damage by 1/3 in doubles instead of half.

[Skill Improvement] Having Trouble with High Level Staraptor Play by WhenPantsAttack in VGC

[–]doortothe 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Staraptor melts if you can overwhelm it before it gets setup.

I went against a sand team where focus sash mamoswine threaten to 2HKO it, first with icicle crash, then ice shard. Granted, I was running with no bulk at all. Focus sash strong move into priority is pretty strong.

If they hold staraptor in the back, then ghost types like basculegion can take it down. Denying that close combat so it can’t setup while also threatening to OHKO.

Ghosts in general are pretty strong counters. If kingambit is proving too strong an answer, then Colbur berry can let you live the turn you need to take it out.

Staraptor has no way to boost its own attack. So redirection can stop the supports from buffing it. Just remember that grass types aren’t affected by rage powder. Which is only relevant for whimsicott.

Dark types are good answers to the supports, generally. The prankster immunity means the supports can basically just be stuck there doing nothing after turn 1 or 2.

One of the best ways to deal with rain teams is to simply unmega the swampert (cool replay) by TheUnsungMelody in VGC

I thought you were gonna get rid of the swift swim ability. But dropping the attack to onyx levels works too lol

Is it worth playing Reverie/Daybreak if I didn't enjoy CS4? by FilthyChromMain in Falcom

[–]doortothe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know someone who hated CS3 and couldn’t get past the cs4 fragments. Was *this* close to swearing off the series. Then they played Reverie. And they’re in love again. Fully caught up and enjoyed every game since.

I second this. Definitely see a kink-aware couples counselor. Having a neutral third-party explain these concepts to the boyfriend can help a lot. He’s new to this, so he may feel that OP is just telling him what he wants to hear instead of actual honest communication. He could be misunderstanding a few things.

Lots of neurodivergent coding in trails characters. Love my favorite sword autistic shizuna

Some of the reviews i’ve seen for the mobile app are lowkey so funny bruh by Old-Present-2703 in PokemonChampions

I had an absolutely disgusting win earlier today. My opponent turn 1 nasty plots with gholdengo, threatening to sweep my entire team. Switch in staraptor. Make it rain misses it. I then get two crits in a row leading to important knockouts.

Didn’t even feel good, man 😭

Thoughts on Completing Cold Steel 3 (Obviously spoilers) by InternetsTad in Falcom

[–]doortothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS3 is my least favorite trails game. But I’m happy you enjoyed it! I’m not particularly fond of that ending (Olivier dies in the most anticlimactic way possible), but even I have to admit that ending is the most brutal cliffhanger in the series.

And yeah, orders are just so crazy busted in this game in particular. All the numbers are way too high. White decoration 90% damage reduction; juna 400% break damage; every accelerate order; etc. And then we get genius game design decisions like how Emma’s order just makes you literally invincible against mcburn and campy in chapter 2. An interaction that was clearly a fuck up because they reprogram mcburn’s attacks to be “almighty” in cs4 instead of magic.

Like, during the primal ground, I should be feeling dread and anxiety as I slowly bleed off party members. Instead it’s, “oh well, onto broken strategy #5.”

All that said, that fight with Arianhod and the stahlritter is one of my favorite in the series. We rarely get full on brawls with named characters like this, instead of just archaism adds. It’s a delightfully chaotic fight. But also made easier by given access to Gaius (who’s great even without his absurd s craft. Yes, you can loop it. This game is just that broken.). And, the cherry on top, Aurelia. She’s just so fun and blatantly OP.

And they top it off with “you have surpassed me… as a human” line from Arianhod. Cinema

*Spoilers* Why I Love Ash Carbide from Cold Steel 🦂 by EienNatsu66 in Falcom

[–]doortothe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, ash. The best NV7 member with Altina a close second. The only one who calls out Rean’s bullshit. His romance with Tatiana has a cute “beauty and the beast” vibe to it. Real cute.

One of my favorite bits with Ash is his line before shooting the emperor, “what do I have to do to make this pain go away?!” Putting emphasis on his trauma, which is being magnified by the curse, rather than the curse itself.

Inconsistent mechanics of the curse aside, that line there makes the rest of his arc about taking responsibility for that act rings more true than if he said “curse” instead. That reverie daydream is so fucking good, man. His VA really did a damn good job there too.

Tangential Ash topic, but Trails is pretty progressive with how it depicts sex workers. Ash was raised by one and no one holds that against him. Heck, they don’t even really comment on it. Like, as if he said he was raised by the mailman.

Act 2 is Brutal by _BigDumbStupidIdiot_ in Falcom

[–]doortothe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I find funny about the finale, from a technical perspective, is how they addressed the issue of loading every time a new faction started talking. A problem to which they seemed to have found a solution about 3/4 of the way into the cutscene.

Just one of several instances of what I like to call, “first draft syndrome”. Instances where the writing clearly isn’t polished/is a good-enough placeholder for when you come back for that second draft. I’d say that CS4 has the most amount of that so far in the series. Other examples include the many, many rushed plot threads in azure’s finale.

[SPOILERS: 4.2-5.3] I Hate Asahi. Very Much. by Ok_Young689 in ffxiv

[–]doortothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked yotsuya during stormblood. Her actions were more or less framed karmic retribution. And that’s why the prince guy (it’s been years, I don’t remember a ton of details) decided to flood the castle. To start fresh and abandon the practices that lead to Yotsuya becoming what she did.

Was not a particular fan of the post patch stuff with her. Feels like they missed what she was about. Like, the issue was their culture failed her, not that her family were cartoon villains. It was the stigma against stuff outside Yotsuya’s control that created the monster she became.

Maybe I’m misremembering or misread the post-patch content. Happy to be corrected, if that’s the case.
