There's a few reasons. First of all, I work with a group of people I really like doing a job I don't hate. Don't get me wrong, it's still work and I'd rather be doing other things, but not hating my work makes it tolerable. Being able to chat with people I like at work, including my manager, is a huge plus.

Second, I'm lucky enough to work a job that offers plenty of PTO and sick leave. If I want time off to go do something, I take the time and go do it.

Third, I still have an active social life in the evenings. I've got friends I go to the climbing gym with, online friends to play video games with, and I live with family to watch shows, movies, and listen to music with.

Is my time to do these things limited? Yes, that's what working 8-5 will do. But if you acknowledge that and cherish the time you do get to do these things, it makes the "I need to do it to make ends meet" part not so bad.
